Ben Webster was never a particularly innovative or experimental tenor sax player, so he often gets overlooked when discussions turn to the greatest sax players of the 20th century, but he could do two things as well as anyone who ever picked up the instrument. He could blow rough and raspy and he could go sweet as fresh sugar on a ballad until one would swear the whole world was weeping. Webster didn't expand, deconstruct, and re-form melodies; he simply made them speak in a way that made the heart swell. This poorly annotated set has examples of both approaches recorded between 1934 and 1944, including the gently rolling "Blues on the Delta," a trademark romp on Duke Ellington's "Cotton Tail," and gorgeous melodic turns on Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies" and Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust." This same era has been covered many times on other Webster anthologies, so it's difficult to recommend this one simply because of its lack of track information, but the music itself is top-notch, swinging and sighing by turns. ~ Steve Leggett
Ben Webster was considered one of the "big three" of swing tenors along with Coleman Hawkins (his main influence) and Lester Young. He had a tough, raspy, and brutal tone on stomps (with his own distinctive growls) yet on ballads he would turn into a pus Ben Webster Blue Skies Songs | 1. | Stardust | $0.99 | |

$23.65 Same as Japanese version but much cheaper! Asian edition of the German progressive metal act's 1999 album includes three bonus tracks, 'Trace Of Life', 'Walk On Fighting' & 'Fairy Tale'. Seoul Records.
Edguy: Tobias Sammet (vocals, keyboards); Jens Ludwig, Dirk Sauer (guitar, background vocals); Tobias Exxel (bass); Felix Bohnke (drums). Additional personnel: Frank Tischer (piano, keyboards); Daniel Gallmarini (piano); Markus Schmitt, Ralf Zdiarstek, Mark Laukel, Uwe Ruppel, Timo Ruppel, Norman Meiritz (background vocals). Recorded at Rhoen Studios, Fulda, Germany in 1998. This Neoclassical German outfit's 1999 release is considered by many to be the band's finest album--some even consider it to be a classic of the genre. The Asian version features three bonus tracks, "Trace of Life," and two live tracks, recorded in Milan: "Walk On Fighting" and "Fairy Tale." After making huge strides between their first and second albums, Edguy make another huge leap in quality with the brilliant Theater of Salvation. The songwriting is even more powerful, and it is consistent from the first note to the last. There are two slower tracks and everything else is very fast. Tobias Sammet's vocals are much improved, perhaps because he was relieved of his bass-playing duties for the first time on this album. Some of the better tracks are "The Headless Game," "Land of the Miracle," "Wake Up the King," "The Unbeliever," and the 12-minute "Theater of Salvation." There is not a bad, or even mediocre, track to be found on this ...
| | Jan Garbarek In Praise Of Dreams CD (2004)
Blue Skies
$14.55 Personnel: Jan Garbarek (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, synthesizer, percussion, sampler); Jan Garbarek; Manu Katche (drums, loops); Kim Kashkashian (viola). Audio Mixers: Manfred Eicher; Jan Garbarek; Jan Erik Kongshaug. Recording information: A.P.C. Studio, Paris, France (03/24/2003-06/04/2003); Blue Jay Recording Studio, Carlisle, MA (03/24/2003-06/04/2003); Oslo, Norway (03/24/2003-06/04/2003). Editors: Manfred Eicher; Jan Garbarek; Jan Erik Kongshaug. Photographer: Jan Jedlicka. It has been six years since saxophonist/composer Jan Garbarek issued a new recording under his own name. For In Praise of Dreams Garbarek enlisted violist Kim Kashkashian and frequent collaborator Manu Katché on drums. Garbarek, who composed the album's 11 selections, plays saxophones as well as a host of keyboards and percussion, while Katché plays acoustic and electronic drums along with Kashkashian's viola. In many ways this is the most radical recording that Garbarek has ever issued, but not because it's outside -- quite the opposite. This is easily the warmest, most accessible outing Garbarek has ever issued because though there are no vocals, Garbarek has clearly written "songs" on this set, with identifiable structures that are followed almost throughout. Though he is no stranger to the form, having employed it almost continually for the last 20 years, he has never engaged it so thoroughly and completely. Previously, he has engaged improvisation to get song to the breaking point and move it somewhere else. Here it is always present; surprise happens inside the formal frameworks of these compositions. Beautiful, soulful lines underscore and recontextualize the saxophonist's trademark Nordic iciness of tone on the opener, "As Seen from Above," with its spiraling soprano, lush keyboards, and hypnotic ...
