While many bluegrass groups deliver lively vocal and instrumental performance and artistry, none has the native born talent that you’ll hear on this fifth release of Big Country Bluegrass on the Hay Holler label. Big Country Bluegrass, founded by Tommy and Teresa Sells14 years ago, delivers obviously heartfelt reverence for the traditions, life themes and faith of Appalachian people, and more specifically Blue Ridge mountain people.Longing for home and family is present in Teresa’s lead singing on “I’m Longing For My Old Virginia Home,” and in new Big Country guitarist and singer Jimmy Trivette’s rendition of “Mama’s Crown.” Jimmy’s rich tenor vocals are joined on this recording by the pitch-perfect resonant fiddle work of Tom Brantley, who demonstrates his vocal range as well, singing lead, low tenor and bass on this album. The work life of Appalachian folks is present in hard driving songs “Carolina Moonshiner” and “Long Haul Truckin’.” On Lee Highway Blues, Tom Brantley displays the ability to play at blinding tone-perfect speeds and he mimics the manual shift of a logging truck. I swear I can hear the baying of a hound dog in parts of his fiddling on this tune.Big Country’s inclusion of four gospel compositions shows the group’s honoring of the faith that has helped generations to survive and love life in the mountains. The musicianship on this album is as clearly delivered as the themes about which Big Country sings. Larry Pennington’s banjo leaps into the room with the urgency you’d expect of a moonshiner making a large sale. Tommy Sells’ mandolin work is rhythmically solid and not cluttered with attempt to deliver too many notes. The guitar work of Teresa and Jimmy combined with Alan Mastin’s bass fiddle provides the foundation of the drive that characterizes this Blue Ridge Mountain gathering of traditional performers.Big Country Bluegrass is more than a collection of individually talented musicians and singers ... they are a “show group” whose stage performance radiates intensity and moves their audience to remember and rejoice in roots of traditional music. $13.99 Whether an artist is conservative, centrist, liberal or downright radical, there is nothing wrong with getting on a political soapbox as long as you're musically sound. Merle Haggard's right-wing diatribes and Public Enemy's angry black nationalist propaganda are equally inspired, and both artists are exciting musically regardless of whether you agree or disagree with their political views. ...

$12.25 Recorded in late summer of 1981, Precious Friend, the second of Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger's live collaborations, is pretty much what you would expect. Seeger is his usual folksy self, leading the crowd through a series of folk tunes ranging from the traditional African chant "Wimoweh (Mbube)" to Harry Chapin's "Circles," while Guthrie mixes his warm counterculture storytelling with selections of old ragtime, gospel, and folk. And while Seeger's singalongs and Guthrie's raps can wear a bit ...

$13.95 The Biography of The Sons Of the ProphetDivinity clad the orchestration of this dynamic and powerful authoring, Sons of the Prophet. The convergence of Sean Lypher, Shaun Remekie and Damoi Simpson could have only been penned so skillfully: seeing neighbors who once expressed an indifference towards each other, and another who was already well on his way to pursuing his calling in another ministry: who could have guessed that such a union would have been possible. One faithful evening, after God in his omniscience had already carefully crafted Lypher’s and Remekie’s friendship using their mutual love for Hip Hop; and also vacated Damoi’s previous commitments: God would have a prophecy to be the children’s bread with the knighting of Sons of the Prophet. And as children they then humbly sought the Father, and asked him to reveal any pride and short comings, not knowing how the Lord would cause this desire to be the basis of their ministry. The year 2003 was a hallmark for the young men of SOP, from being knighted to being so fittingly adorned with their spiritual armor. Now faced with an uphill struggle of sourcing beats that would allow them to apply the skills garnered from previous influences such as The Gospel Gangstaz, and Gritz… secular beats they found was only available to them. Nevertheless, in their own words “We prayed and gave the beats to the Lord to sanctify”: In a desire to move in the will of God, the young men wrote and performed any where they could. One such place, and for them “the first form of exposure”, came in their hay days at a church camp, at the Open Bible Church. As they grew in maturity their audience, primarily `teeny boppers’, saw them graduate from lyrics such as "I got the Holy tool, ya'll know that’s my Bible, Ten shots from that it be the Gospel rifle...” to their break out hit “My God”, release on the Spirit Scription Album (2006) produced by Dale `Dr. Dizzle` Virgo.“My God”, fast become an anthem and made these young men the talk of the Christian community. The new found acknowledgement, soon birth the realization that they were indeed Jamaicans.Admired as one of the best tracks from the album, “My God” which boastful speaks of their pride in serving God, was destined for due acknowledgement where a clean and clear hock and explosive and current lyrics captivated the minds of Christians and non-Christians alike. The newly found recognition soared into the ...
