| | Johnny Winter Still Alive And Well CD (1973)
America The Beautiful album
$6.79 You might mistake this for a live record, but this is actually a 1973 studio release by the Texas blues guitar master. Winter's first release after a brief retirement/drying-out period, STILL ALIVE AND WELL, from the title on down, has the feeling of a major comeback, although Winter really hadn't been gone for very long. Looking hale and hearty on the cover--or as hale and hearty as a rail-thin albino can look, anyway--Winter sounds equally fit on the songs themselves. Produced by his longtime collaborator Rick Derringer, who also leads the tight and flashy band with his rhythm and second lead playing, the album is possibly the most pop-oriented release of Winter's tenure at Columbia. The band, which features ...
| | Buddy's Baddest: The Best Of Buddy Guy CD (1999)
America The Beautiful CD music
$8.99 In 1991 Buddy Guy teamed up with Silvertone Records, doubtless hoping for a piece of the action being enjoyed by John Lee Hooker following his career-reviving THE HEALER. Featuring a crack selection of backing musicians, DAMN RIGHT, I'VE GOT THE BLUES was liberally spiced with big name rock artists. The formula worked and Buddy Guy won many new fans. On the next two albums, FEELS LIKE RAIN and SLIPPIN' IN, the heavy friends were gradually phased out in favour of fine ensemble work.
Tellingly, of the four tracks chosen from DAMN RIGHT, only "Mustang Sally" has a stellar contribution (from Jeff Beck). The three songs selected from FEELS LIKE RAIN include the lovely title track, written by John Hiatt and featuring Bonnie Raitt on slide guitar. SLIPPIN IN' benefited from the presence of veteran pianist Johnnie Johnson, who also crops up on "My Time After Awhile" from LIVE! THE REAL DEAL. A fourth studio set HEAVY LOVE yields "Midnight Train," a mid-pace scorcher ...

| | Chris Hopkins Daybreak CD (2000)
America The Beautiful album
$9.59 This master class in early jazz piano styles is presented by the young Chris Hopkins, a New Jersey-born and German-bred pianist who started out on harpsichord as a child but soon discovered the virtuoso jazz styles of such early greats as Earl Hines, Fats Waller, Teddy Wilson, and stride colossi James P. Johnson and Willie "The Lion" Smith. It's the influence of those stride masters that comes across most clearly in Hopkins' own playing, although he assimilates them into a personal ...
| | Gary Moore Scars CD (2002)
America The Beautiful CD music
$9.69 After spending over a decade churning out electrified blues, Gary Moore partially returns to his hard rock beginnings in Scars. Reminiscent of '60s power trios such as Cream and especially the Jimi Hendrix Experience ("World of Confusion" is practically a rewrite of "Manic Depression" and "Ball and Chain" borrows the riff from "Voodoo Child"), Moore hasn't abandoned the blues, he's just pumped it up with blustery retro roots rock. With all the genre's limitations, the guitarist is so obviously inspired in this format that the album is a success on its own terms, even though it breaks little new ground. "Wasn't Born in Chicago" infuses jazzy drums and slight electronics to enhance the ...
| | James Cohen High Side Of Low Down CD (2003)
America The Beautiful music CDs
$12.89 The High Side of Low Down is a cool combination of gypsy jazz, flamenco, and blues. Performed by the James Cohen Band, this 11-track set features both flamenco and steel-stringed guitarists out front on original compositions penned by both Cohen and his bandmates. Tony D. who has been hailed as one of the best blues guitarists in Canada, plays a superb steel-string on the opening track, titled "Pun Tango," which is literally a real treat for Astor Piazzolla or tango enthusiasts. Flavored with the accordion playing of the legendary keyboard player Richard Bell, the song captures the essence of a Buenos Aires tango club through soaring melodies and ace guitar emotion. "High Side of Lowdown" is a beautiful song that features rich harmonies and splendid flamenco rhythms influenced by gypsy motives that reflect the sentiments -- ...
| | Tab Benoit Sea Saint Sessions CD (2003)
America The Beautiful songs
$8.55 Tab Benoit's third album in just over two years (including his collaboration with Jimmy Thackery) is, like his previous few releases, a loose and homey affair. Recorded at the titular New Orleans studio and featuring Crescent City guests Cyril Neville and Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, along with funky Meters Brian Stoltz and George Porter sitting in on various tracks, this is a live-sounding disc with few obvious overdubs. Benoit's road band, comprised of bassist Carl DuFrene and drummer Darryl White, knows how to keep the pocket mean and lean yet flexible, giving the guitarist room to roam against the funky rhythm section. Except for an explosive cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Howlin' for My Darling" and Eddie Jones' slow blues "Sufferin' Mind," the tunes are written or co-written by Benoit. As the title of "Solid Simple Thing" suggests, these songs aren't breaking new ground, but they do allow the singer to stretch out, albeit in territory familiar to his fans. So even though "Darkness" is a straight slow blues, Benoit's gutsy voice, powerful delivery, and swampy guitar make it a perfect vehicle to showcase his strengths. A call-and-response duet with Boudreaux featuring Benoit playing slinky slide was probably written as it was first played, providing a friendly living-room vibe that feels as comfy as a pair of old jeans. Neville adds some frothy funk when he sings on a sexy "Plareen Man," trading verses with Benoit, who contributes a ...
