| | B B King Christmas Collection: 20th Century Masters CD (2003) Remastered
America The Beautiful album
$8.35 This edition in Universal's discount-priced compilation series 20th Century Masters/The Christmas Collection is actually a re-titled reissue of the 2001 collection A Christmas Celebration of Hope. It took B.B. King a long time to get around to his first Christmas album, which didn't appear until about half a century into his recording career. It's an adequate, good-humored reprisal of various holiday chestnuts, among them some material with blues/R&B origins, like "Merry Christmas Baby." King wrote just one new song for the album, the instrumental "Christmas Love," though he did originally record another of the tracks, "Christmas Celebration," back in 1960. Wisely he plays "Auld Lang Syne" as a funky instrumental ...

| | Chris Hopkins Daybreak CD (2000)
America The Beautiful album
$9.59 This master class in early jazz piano styles is presented by the young Chris Hopkins, a New Jersey-born and German-bred pianist who started out on harpsichord as a child but soon discovered the virtuoso jazz styles of such early greats as Earl Hines, Fats Waller, Teddy Wilson, and stride colossi James P. Johnson and Willie "The Lion" Smith. It's the influence of those stride masters that comes across most clearly in Hopkins' own playing, although he assimilates them into a personal style that combines the athletic vigor of their approaches with an elegance and gentle touch that probably has its roots in his harpsichord training. In fact, some listeners may find him a bit too light-fingered, wanting him to rock out a bit more from time to time. ...
| | Gary Moore Scars CD (2002)
America The Beautiful CD music
$9.99 After spending over a decade churning out electrified blues, Gary Moore partially returns to his hard rock beginnings in Scars. Reminiscent of '60s power trios such as Cream and especially the Jimi Hendrix Experience ("World of Confusion" is practically a rewrite of "Manic Depression" and "Ball and Chain" borrows the riff from "Voodoo Child"), Moore hasn't abandoned the blues, he's just pumped it up with blustery retro roots rock. With all the genre's limitations, the guitarist is so obviously inspired in this format that the album is a success on its own terms, even though it breaks little new ground. "Wasn't Born in Chicago" infuses jazzy drums and slight electronics to enhance the basic three-piece assault, resulting in the album's most unique and arguably best performance. Moore's pacing also helps as he softens his attack on ballads like "Just Can't Let You Go" and the closing "Who Knows (What Tomorrow May Bring)?" He effectively shifts from tender to tense to explosive in seconds and, even on ...
| | Tab Benoit Sea Saint Sessions CD (2003)
America The Beautiful music CDs
$8.55 Tab Benoit's third album in just over two years (including his collaboration with Jimmy Thackery) is, like his previous few releases, a loose and homey affair. Recorded at the titular New Orleans studio and featuring Crescent City guests Cyril Neville and Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, along with funky Meters Brian Stoltz and George Porter sitting in on various tracks, this is a live-sounding disc with few obvious overdubs. Benoit's road band, comprised of bassist Carl DuFrene and drummer Darryl White, knows how to keep the pocket mean and lean yet flexible, giving the guitarist room to roam against the funky rhythm section. Except for an explosive cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Howlin' for My Darling" and Eddie Jones' slow blues "Sufferin' Mind," the tunes are written or co-written by Benoit. As the title of "Solid Simple Thing" suggests, these songs aren't breaking new ground, but they do allow the singer to stretch out, albeit in territory familiar to his fans. So even though "Darkness" is a straight slow blues, Benoit's gutsy voice, powerful delivery, and swampy guitar make it a perfect vehicle to showcase his strengths. A call-and-response duet with Boudreaux featuring Benoit playing slinky slide was probably written as it was first played, providing a friendly living-room vibe that feels as comfy as a pair of old jeans. Neville adds some frothy funk when he sings on a sexy "Plareen Man," trading verses with Benoit, who contributes a frisky, sinuous solo as Boudreaux slaps his tambourine. "Hustlin' Down in New Orleans," with guitarist Stoltz, won't exactly give Bob Dylan a run for his money lyrically, but sets up an easygoing R&B stride with alternating guitar solos. It, like the rest of this fiery, foot-tapping ...

The second in a pair of mid-'90s concert discs from the Fall, Pearl City 1996 fares better than its counterpart, 1995's Idiot Joy Show, if only for the top-notch execution of early favorites like "U.S. 80's-90's" -- listed here as "15 Ways" ...
