Punk Goes 80's is a cute idea for a comp. Not very punk, not very original, but very cute and fun. Pop-punk stalwarts Fearless Records round up their stable of bands and some compatriots to do covers of '80s pop hits. The bands who take liberties with their source material come off the best: Relient K's quirky version of the Bangles' "Manic Monday," which somehow becomes a tribute to Quiet Riot, Halifax's emo-tastic reworking of Paula Abdul's "Straight Up," and Jamison Parker's techno destruction and rebuild of Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." Elsewhere the songs are about what you would imagine, with earnest remakes of tunes like Alphaville's "Forever Young" (by So They Say), Modern English's "I Melt With You" (by Sugarcult), and Simple Minds' "Don't You Forget About Me" (by Rufio) that don't add anything to the originals but will appeal to fans of the bands doing the covering. Extra points for the CD cover's dead-on parody of a tacky '80s collection. ~ Tim Sendra Punk Goes 80'S Music | List Price | $13.98 (You save $2.33) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Punk CDs, Punk Collections, Rock, Oldies Collections | | Label | Fearless | | Orig Year | 2005 | | All Time Sales Rank | 67474 | | CD Universe Part number | 6864124 | | Catalog number | 30075 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Jun 07, 2005 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Gavin MacKillop; Zach Hodges; Casey Bates; Brandon Smith; Ace Enders; Justina Powell; Jamison Covington; Robert Freeman; Mark Lee Townsend; Rob Freeman; Gavin MacKillop; Matt Jimenez; Zach Hodges; Casey Bates; Brandon Smith; Ace Enders; Justin Powell; Will Nutter; Dango | | Engineer | Gavin MacKillop; Casey Bates; Brandon Smith; Ace Enders; Justina Powell; Brandon Bee; Jason McEntire; Jason Orris; Matt Squire; Heath Saraceno; Dustin Miller |

| Punk Goes 80'S Music Review Average Rating: (3.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Good decade to cover They 80's man covering these songs is almost too easy, but what I like is that some if not most of the bands (yes, they're bands quit trying to classify music and just enjoy it) have their own take on those classic 15 tracks. Gatsby's American Dream's version of the Cure's "Just Like Heaven" is my favorite on the CD, but Motion City Soundtrack, Midtown, and Relient K are also name dropers that do a good job. And Relient K is not as bad as Good Charlotte they're more on par with New Found Glory as far as style and have the radio popularity as any other band that's on this CD. They have like 2 songs that were ever played on the radio and or MTV. Overall this cd was a great idea. Punk goes Pop wasn't bad either. Punk Goes 90's I will reserve tearing it apart to keep this brief. Submitted by yearofthetiger86 (Bowling Green, Ohio, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Jay-z? Guy named jay-z knows what punk is. OK. He says old green day. Green Day is more punk now than before. Punk is about rebellion and making your voice be heard. American Idiot was a prime example of that. These bands are not punk, you're right. But who cares? Is it really that big of a deal? It's good music if you like it, and it's bad music if you don't. I happen to think they did a good job on the covers for the most part. One thing though, they need to start doing a better job with these CDs. Punk Goes Metal was great, Pop Goes Punk was OK, I have sampled Punk Goes 90s and I'm not too impressed. I liked 80s, though. Submitted by Jan (Mt. Leo, MA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
WTF people who work at hollister do NOT know punk. lol the kid who works at hollister doesnt even know what punk is, i mean come on, relient K? thats like as bad as good charlotte haha, i mean seriously. if they had like rise against, and afi playing like they used to, some old green day style, every time i die, stuff like that, that would make it sweet. when i first saw the idea, i was like that is a sweet concept, new punk bands playing some old school stuff! but the bands arent very good, real punk is dead and emo has taken over unfortunately. ::sigh:: dead kennedys and the exploited would be like freaking out lol Submitted by jay-z (Los Angeles , CA) Was This Review Helpful? disgraceful to even call the bands on this record "punk" makes my stomach hurt. plus the punk music in the eighties was sung by people who had their OWN ideas, not by pussies who are depressed because thier girlfriends dumped them or they broke their skateboard. utter Brill! the bands pull it off perfectly, playing tunes which are legends in themselves, and played by the bands own personal style it justs puts the cd into perfection!
