There's a special quality to the blues that came up out of Texas. You can hear it in the raggy-time music of Henry Thomas, in the spiritually charged rituals of Blind Willie Johnson, and in the unmistakable Southwestern blues of Lightnin' Hopkins. It is said that young Sam Hopkins received firsthand instruction from Blind Lemon Jefferson. As a boy, Hopkins worked in the cotton fields until choosing to become, like Henry Thomas, a wandering musician. He also began performing with his cousin, a pianist and blues shouter from Leona, south of Centerville, who went by the name of Texas Alexander. Sam Hopkins became known as Lightnin' when in 1946 he made 14 records with pianist Thunder Smith for the Aladdin label in Hollywood. This is the fifth installment of Lightnin' Hopkins' complete recordings presented in chronological order. There are occasional departures from his standard pattern of blues for solo voice and guitar: "Needed Time" is a spiritual, and "Candy Kitchen" is a rare example of Hopkins accompanying himself on the piano. "Another Fool in Town" is stunningly honest and beautifully executed. Sensitive listeners may experience a sense of wonderment at this individual's remarkable ritual of self-expression. His one-man show was at first described by music critics as stark or even "a little bewildering," largely because of the complete absence of pretentiousness or superficiality. Most of these recordings were made in Houston, including this artist's only sides for Specialty Records. Four sides cut in New York in 1951 for the Sittin' in With record label find Hopkins assisted by an unidentified bassist. A mention in the discography of "tap dancing" seems to refer to the sound of the guitarist patting his foot while rocking his way through a spirited boogie appropriately entitled "Gotta Move." ~ arwulf arwulf

Although Lightnin' Hopkins only had a brace of official national chart hits in the early 1950s, his records must have sold steadily, as he was obviously in demand and recorded ubiquitously until the advent of rock 'n' roll in the mid 1950s. His final Bil

With his gospel-inflected vocals, full of melismatic swoops and sighs, and a penchant for speeded-up jump blues songs with strong sax lines, Roy Brown created the very template for early rock & roll in the late 1940s and early '50s. This first installment ...

Born in Minden, LA, and raised in Houston, TX, Percy Mayfield came to Los Angeles in 1942 determined to succeed as a songwriter, and gradually developed into a nationally recognized recording artist. Four incredibly rare sides released on the GruVtone label in 1947 are presented here as a prologue to Mayfield's Supreme and Specialty recordings. "Jack, You Ain't Nowhere" is a swinging strut for unidentified sax and rhythm with vocal chorus and periodic bursts of gruff hollering. "Get Way Back" is particularly interesting, with Mayfield speaking (rather than singing) in an offhand manner slightly off-mike. This feels like a taproot of rap music. Also recorded in 1947, four sides issued on the Supreme label find Mayfield singing the blues backed by Monroe Tucker's orchestra. Jazz heads will thrill to hear Marshall Royal blowing his alto sax with this smoky little ...

Charlie Singleton 1949-1953 CD  (2005)

Born in Kansas City around 1930, alto and tenor saxophonist Charlie Singleton went to the same school as Charlie Parker had a few years earlier -- Lincoln High -- and even studied with Bird's music teacher Leo Davis. In 1949, Singleton started making records under his own name in New York City at the precocious age of 19. This exciting Classics Chronological Series compilation, described as "the first reissue in any format of Singleton's R&B legacy," is packed with surprises. The first two tracks -- exceptionally fine blues instrumentals -- originally appeared on the Apollo label, and were followed by a pair of Linwood Sutton vocal selections issued on Star Records. These are notable for the presence of Jackie McLean on baritone sax and Gildo Mahones at the piano. Singleton made a handful of recordings in 1950: first for the obscure Lee label, then ...

Originally issued in March 1977, Loleatta was the singer's debut release for Philly soul guitarist Norman Harris' Goldmine label distributed by NY-based Salsoul Records. It was both produced in Chicago by her husband Floyd Smith and in Philadelphia through Baker-Harris-Young Productions. The LP boasted Holloway's highest-charting R&B single, the Sam Dees ballad "Worn Out Broken Heart," and the dance classics "Hit and Run" and "Dreamin'." The former has two extended alternate "jam session" takes that are found on the original 12" pressings baring the Goldmind logo. One of the takes is on Original Salsoul Classics: The 20th Anniversary and is sometimes found on CD reissues of the LP. Another passion-soaked ballad, "What Now," a Curtis Mayfield song, received radio play as an album track. The upbeat "We're Getting Stronger (The Longer We Stay)" has a smokin' rhythm break. A Satoshi Tomiie remix of "Dreamin'" issued by Salsoul/The Right Stuff/EMI ...
