Church Of Yesterday album
$17.75 Siblings Hugh and Katy Moffatt have pursued different musical roads over the years. Hugh has established himself in Nashville as songwriter and folk-influenced singer, while Katy has leaned in a more overt country direction. This is their first full collaboration, and it showcases Hugh's troubadour-like rich baritone and poetic lyrics and Katy's dynamic country vocals and passionate songs. The top-notch backing musicians include Buddy Emmons (steel guitar, dobro), Tim O'Brien (mandolin), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), and Albert Lee (lead guitar on two songs). ~ Roundup Newsletter

Church Of Yesterday CD music
$16.45 Liner Notes:It was on a hot, steamy night in August 2003 when I first encountered these Bluegrass Brothers. I was waiting backstage at John Hutchinson’s Amelia, Virginia bluegrass festival, tuning up and getting ready for our set when I heard the Brothers’ rendition of a song entitled “Country Poor And Country Proud.” I’d remembered that song from the Bluegrass Cardinals’ version back in the 1980s and had always liked it; now I was curious that somebody else had picked it up and was doing a good job of it. Like the famous line in the movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” I kept thinking, “who are those guys?” I noticed right off that the singing was not only very good, but had a lot of feeling. The bass fiddle player (whom I was to find out later was Victor Dowdy, one of the two actual brothers ...

Church Of Yesterday songs
$12.98 Garnering all of the years of performing and musicianship from its cast, the first record from this bluegrass and country group starts off with a rousing "More Than Fine," recalling all the great pickers of the past, as well as a lovely pedal steel guitar. Using a slow but very reliable rhythm to transmit the feeling in tracks such as "Bramalea," the group is able to fuse influences such as Bill Monroe with current artists such as Prairie Oyster and Blue Rodeo, if led by Greg Keelor. "Spinning," similar to Dire Straits' "The Bug" on slow-speed dubbing, offers up more of the same folk and rootsy arrangement with toe-tapping satisfaction and attraction. When the group opts for a slower, more melodic approach, songs such as "Motel 6" emit a feeling of listening to Jeff Tweedy and Chris Isaak debate the virtues of Mark Knopfler. Lead singer Dan Kershaw doesn't allow his voice to carry the album, acting more like any other instrument with positive results. Like most albums, though, there are a few songs that aren't as strong and sound too formulaic, especially the pop-country atmosphere on "We Didn't Feel a Thing," where the group tries a bit too hard. And the radical adaptation of "No Reply" is courageous but adds little to the album's whole. Thankfully, "It's Alright" steers the musical ship back on course. This is an album which grows on the listener effortlessly. ~ Jason MacNeil
One of Americana's favored sons proves why, with all the frills of a torn leather jacket. If you're not into Duane Jarvis yet, it's time. DELICIOUSA good case of the blues on a rainy day really helped to get inside the deep and hypnotic quality of DJ's deceptively straight ahead and very sparsely produced record. Duane paired up with George Marinelli at his Wing Ding Studios. Good things happen there. The co-producer is a mighty instrumentalist, but added only a few crucial flourishes. His Wurlitzer track on "Beyond Beautiful" and the Keith Richards style electric guitar on the title track certainly helped stand them out as my two clear favorites, although the surprisingly Leonard Cohen-esque co-write with Chuck Prophet, "Spread My Soul Too Thin," is also fabulous.DJ's brand of music draws from many quarters. Country blues and folk populate many songs, along with a punk sensibility that surfaces on others, and plenty of old Country and Blues ghosts walk through the lyrics and grooves of the eleven songs. All but one were co-written by the artist with a host of greats that include Tim Carroll and Tim Krekel, Chuck Prophet, George Marinelli and others. The Duane Jarvis journey so far has found him at the center of the music scene in Portland, Los Angeles, and East Nashville. He counts a long list of luminaries among his friends and supporters, and has gigged or recorded with Lucinda Williams, The Divinyls, Dwight Yoakam, ...
