This DVD documentary traces the years Bruce Springsteen spent perfecting his art, via the various bands that he played with in the bars and nightspots of New Jersey to his signing with Columbia records and his first successful album Born To Run. The story continues into the 80s and reveals how this phenomenal artist captured the masses and had the world firmly at his feet. Features include exclusive interviews with colleagues such as close school friends Richard Blackwell and Joseph Balencko, Steel Mill manager Carl Tinker West and singer Robbin Thompson, E Street band member Vini Lopez, Castilles bass player Frank Marziotti and many others. With a knack for capturing the bittersweet melancholy of working-class Americana, and well-known for his espousal of progressive politics, Bruce Springsteen has become a true American hero, and an enduring icon of the common people. This documentary examines the early years of "The Boss," told through the eyes of many who were close to him as his nascent superstardom gathered steam. Beginning with his time in his first band, the Castilles, and later with the Steel Mill, audiences relive those early days on the local New Jersey bar circuit, when fans regularly enjoyed three-hour long performances. After gaining a cult-like local following, and releasing a couple of albums to critical but not commercial success, the artist was signed to Columbia Records and created the seminal BORN TO RUN, the album that made Bruce Springsteen a household name. Looking back on this period of incubation are Richard Blackwell and Joseph Balencko, Springsteen's close school friends, as well as the Steel Mill's former manager, Carl Tinker West, and singer, Robbin Thompson. Castilles bassist Frank Marziotti and E Street Band member Vini Lopez shed further light on the history of this performer, who single-handedly changed the face of rock & roll.

| | Vince Neil Live One Night Only CD (2003)
Bruce Springsteen - Becoming The Boss: 1949-1985 review
$9.25 Vince Neil at the Whisky. It may not be the Beatles at the Star Club -- or even Otis Redding at the Whisky -- but it has weight, a sense of history, and purpose. The Whisky was one of Mötley Crüe's mainstays, so when the singer returns for a show and a souvenir live album years later, it should be an event. It's not. It's an oldies show, a Crüe revue performed by the man himself. Even Vince Neil knows that nobody comes to see him to hear his solo songs. He knocks out "Look in Her Eyes" (remember that? The first tune on his first solo record) early in the show, devoting himself to the Nikki Sixx songbook for the rest of the record, hitting most of the big tunes: "Kick Start My Heart," "Home Sweet Home," "Looks That Kill," and "Dr. Feelgood," among them, of course, along with the de rigeur cover of Brownsville Station's "Smokin' in the Boysroom." Though there are some songs that are firmly for the die-hard fans -- fan favorites and album tracks like "Knock 'Em Dead, Kid" are revived -- this still plays like an oldies show with all the schtick that entails, including a flirtation with medleys, as he has "Girls Girls Girls" slide into "Same Ol' Situation." Neil sometimes is in thin voice, stretching the limits of his upper register, ...
| | Warren Zevon Wind CD (2003)
Bruce Springsteen - Becoming The Boss: 1949-1985 DVD
$15.09 THE WIND won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Keep Me in Your Heart" was nominated for Song Of The Year and for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. "Disorder in the House" won for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and was also nominated for Best Rock Song.
With the specter of a terminal lung cancer diagnosis hanging over his head, Warren Zevon responded by rallying to make THE WIND, an album that found him working with longtime collaborator and friend Jorge Calderon, shortly after getting the news. The result is a tight group of 11 songs wrapped up in a year, despite a diagnosis that only gave Zevon three months to live. Along the way, plenty of famous names--both friends and fans--pitched in, including Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, Dwight Yoakam and Don Henley. Allusions to his situation are naturally sprinkled throughout, whether it's partying in the face of doom ("The Rest of the Night"), using a self-penned blues song to look back with no regrets ("Rub Me Raw"), ...
| | L A Guns Hollywood Raw: The Original Sessions CDs (2004)
Bruce Springsteen - Becoming The Boss: 1949-1985 movie DVD
$12.69 Includes tracks recorded prior to L.A. Guns's 1988 debut album.
Before there was L.A. Guns there was Guns N' Roses. Or if you are more inclined to believe the liner notes, it's the other way around. No matter how the fable gets framed, somewhere in time (specifically Los Angeles in the mid-'80s), Hollywood rockers Axl Rose and Tracii Guns split to form their own respective groups. Hollywood Raw features the post-Axl L.A. Guns demo sessions when they were trying to make the leap from Troubadour mainstays to major-label stardom. And that's exactly what these tracks are to the core: demos in all ...
