Static-X: Wayne Static (vocals, guitar, programming); Tony Campos (vocals, bass guitar); Koichi Fukuda (guitar, programming); Nick Oshiro (drums). Additional personnel: Tripp Eisen (guitar); Daniel Wild (percussion); Jason Freedman (sound effects). Static-X's 2003 album Shadow Zone was a mess. Trying too blatantly to match wits with Korn and searching blindly for depth in electronics and processed drums, it tried desperately to expand on the sound of Machine and Wisconsin Death Trip, and that flawed ambition was its biggest problem. The early material was grating and one-dimensional, but it had a certain primal flair for the very same reasons -- songs were really an afterthought in the face of its blistering howl. Frontman Wayne Static seems to have figured that out with 2005's Start a War, and he's aided by the thick and hoary tone of original guitarist Koichi Fukada, who's rejoined the fold after the forced departure of Tripp Eisen. (This is also the band's first recording with former tour-only drummer Nick Oshiro.) From the beginning, War lights into a guttural guitar strut over refreshing live drumming and doesn't let up, masking Static's laughably atrocious lyrics (keywords: destroy, kill, hate, fall, terror, self-destruct) with an unrelenting roar. Imagine the sewage wind flowing though an abandoned subway line, or a thousand first-person shooters cranked to full volume, and that's the effect of "Enemy," "I'm the One," the screeching "Start a War," and "Dirthouse." The latter suffers from weird tattletale intonation in the vocal. However, its harsh snare reports are brilliant, and the billowing electronic throbs and sirens make it sound like White Zombie idling at a starting line. It's not a new sound, not anywhere near, and Start a War inevitably falters. It can't survive on a diet of enormous guitar tone alone. But at least Static-X is having fun making this stuff, and in its best moments the album is a raucous, hedonistic chortle, a crinkling PVC lark, an industrial thrash waste valve blaring deafening nothingness into the inky night sky. ~ Johnny Loftus START A WAR's attendant printed info notes that the disc was recorded in "Sunny Burbank, California." A few seconds, however, is all it will take to convince listeners that this is one of Static X's darkest efforts. "The Enemy" skitters along at a frenetic, machine-gun-like pace appropriate for it's war-related title, while lead vocalist/screamer Wayne Static delivers an abrasive yet fleet-tongued combination of death-metal growling and East Coast speed-rapping. "Just in Case" emphasizes the industrial side of Static X's sound, with chorus music reminiscent of something one might hear in an auto manufacturing plant. "I Want to F****** Break It" begins with what sounds like an old time carnival tune that, though quickly overtaken by a repetitive jackhammer riff and violent lyrics, reappears throughout the song. The keyboards and new wave-style vocals that drive "My Damnation"'s verse reveal that in another life, Static X likely could have made it as a synth-pop band.

Start A War Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews They try to go back to wisconsin.. They always say when a new record is made "We try to make this just as rough as Wisconsin death trip" but they did Shadow zone (a great album) and now they try to go back to those old songs, even though they can to much better!
This is almost like shadow zone only a little low soundquality. Half this album are great, the rest needs a few listenings before you can listen from start to end. its their second best album, but they try to go back to much! Best Static-X To Date! This is a great album! There's a few songs that i dont like but other than that its awesome. This is way better than shadow zone and machine but not better than wisconsin death trip. The awesome thing about static-x is that they will always stay heavy. Good work guys! not too bad Static X is surely a unique band, pretty much an original troop. I was pleasantly suprised when I bought this cd. It seemed they were slowly heading down hill since their debut. But this recording has halted that journey and placed them back on top. I wish Wayne all the luck in the world, he's come along ways from playing junior high dances back in shelby, michigan. Amazing!! I've been a fan of Static-x since pre-Wisconsin Death Trip. I was disappointed by Shadow Zone, but Start A War COMPLETELY redeems it! It's a definite throwback to the viciousness of early Static-X, but at the same time shows how much their sound has progressed. I strongly recommend this to fans of anything from Breaking Benjamin to Korn to Slayer to Finch to Ministry. It's an amazing album Submitted by --- (Chicago, IL) Was This Review Helpful? Start A War
$6.49 Live Recording
Alice In Chains: Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell (vocals, guitar); Michael Starr (bass); Sean Kinney (drums). Additional personnel: Tom Araya (background vocals). Recorded in 1992. Dirt is Alice in Chains' major artistic statement and the closest they ever came to recording a flat-out masterpiece. It's a primal, sickening howl from the depths of Layne Staley's heroin addiction, and one of the most harrowing concept albums ever recorded. Not every song on Dirt is explicitly about heroin, but Jerry Cantrell's solo-written contributions (nearly half the album) effectively ...

$8.99 Mudvayne: Chad Gray (vocals); Greg Tribbett (guitar); Ryan Martinie (bass guitar); Matt McDonough (drums). It's been three years for Mudvayne, three years when metal started to reject its "rap" and "nu" prefixes. At first, Lost and Found reflects that realignment. Vocalist Chad Gray and his mates have ...

$5.95 The Isley Brothers: O'Kelly Isley, Ronald Isley, Rudolph Isley, Ernie Isley, Marvin Isley, Chris Jasper. A very important album for the Isley Brothers, 1969's It's Our Thing found Ronald, O'Kelly and Rudolph Isley reviving their T-Neck label and marked the beginning of their association with Buddah (where they would remain until moving T-Neck to Epic/CBS in 1973). Creatively, this excellent LP put the siblings in the driver's seat -- they did all of the producing and songwriting ...
