Bourbon St. Magic
$7.95 Although this CD draws its 22 selections from clarinetist Pete Fountain's best period (his years on the Coral label), the selections picked are sometimes a bit eccentric. Fountain is heard playing Dixieland with some of his bands, but is also joined by -- choral groups and occasional strings; no personnel listing or even recording dates are included. There is some good music along the way (such as "While We Danced at the Mardi Gras," "China Boy," "High Society," "Over the Waves" and "Indiana"), and even if this material deserved more knowledgeable treatment, most of these recordings are otherwise out-of-print; ...

| | Pete Fountain Presents The Best Of Dixieland: Pete Fountain CD (2001)
Bourbon St. Magic
$8.29 Recorded between 1950 and 1968. Includes liner notes by Pete Fountain and Will Friedwald.
Digitally remastered by Kevin Reeves (Universal Music Studios-East).
There are relatively few of Pete Fountain's early-'60s Coral recordings available on CD, which is a pity because those rank with the finest work of the New Orleans clarinetist's career. This sampler in a series presented by Fountain has 20 selections in all. A dozen cuts comprise the complete reissue of the 1963 album South Rampart Street Parade, an unusual date in which Fountain, trumpeter Jackie Coon, trombonist Moe Schneider, tuba, banjo, and bass are joined by four drummers who each focus on specific parts of a drum set in order to sound like a New Orleans parade band. The results are naturally quite rhythmic and fun. In addition, Fountain is featured on seven earlier tracks, including three numbers ...
| | Pete Fountain Big Band Blues CD (2001)
Bourbon St. Magic
$13.25 Pete Fountain has been synonymous with Dixieland jazz since the late '50s, and it makes sense that he would record with the New Lawrence Welk Orchestra, since he originally rose to fame playing his music during special features on The Lawrence Welk Show between 1957 and 1959. This ghost band is not that similar to its predecessor, as it features swinging arrangements by guitarist Bob Bain (a veteran of the Tonight Show Band and Bob Crosby's Bobcats) that mostly last three to four minutes and serve to showcase the clarinetist. Throughout his career, Fountain has covered a lot of material found on this release, including "Tin Roof Blues," "Basin Street Blues," and "Just a Closer Walk With Thee," and he settles in quite well in his first big-band recording in nearly three decades. His improvisations within "Georgia ...

Volume One of the RODGERS AND HART SONGBOOK was one of Ella Fitzgerald's most artistically and commercially successful albums, so obviously a sequel was called for. You'd be forgiven for expecting lukewarm leftovers, but given the range and depth of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart's catalogue, it's not entirely surprising that THE RODGERS AND HART SONGBOOK VOLUME TWO is even better than the original.
Opening with the little-known but wonderfully sly New York love song "Give It Back To The Indians," VOLUME TWO sprints through 16 other Rodgers and Hart classics in just over 56 minutes, including their early gems "There's a Small Hotel" and "Mountain Greenery," an exquisite "Blue Moon," and one of the very best of the seemingly hundreds of versions of the standard "My Funny Valentine." This is a remarkable tribute to one of pop music's greatest songwriting teams.
This was the second of the Song Books that Ella Fitzgerald recorded for the Verve label in the mid 1950s. The brilliant Nelson Riddle hadn't yet signed on, but Verve staff arranger Buddy Bregman was fully up to the task of providing musical settings for ...
