Breathe New Life
$9.09 Recorded between 1972 & 1975. Includes liner notes by Kevin Phinney.
Digitally remastered by Bill Inglott & Dan Hersch (DigiPrep).
Usually, it's not a good sign if a band is generally known for augmenting artists instead of their own records, but Tower of Power was really a very good horn section, and they did make records that held their own. Of course, "What Is Hip?" was the biggest single they ever had, but they also had several other smaller hits that captured their sleek, stylized soul-funk quite well, such as "Soul Vaccination." Pretty much all of those songs are captured on Rhino's 2001 anthology The Very Best of Tower of Power: The Warner Years, which spans 16 tracks and contains almost all the highlights of their '70s records. Yes, the 1999 double-disc set What Is Hip? is more comprehensive, but that's really for serious listeners. For listeners that ...
| | Silktime CD (2003)
Breathe New Life
$13.39 Los Angeles vocal group Silk hurtled into the national spotlight back in 1993 when they were all over the radio with the smoothed-out #1 pop and R&B hit "Freak Me." While they've never quite matched those lofty heights since that auspicious debut, they've never gone away, releasing a well-received record about every three years. A decade later, they've released SILKTIME, perhaps the act's most ambitious outing to date.
Despite being reduced to a foursome with the departure of Lil' G, Silk's vocal harmonies remain intact. However, the musical landscapes behind the voices have become more varied and unpredictable, ...
| | Rhian Benson Gold Coast CD (2003)
Breathe New Life
$11.49 The music of Rhian Benson is an exciting mélange of R&B, soul, jazz, reggae, hip-hop, and worldbeat. Her debut recording titled Gold Coast features the stunning vocalist interpreting 13 songs that she wrote and co-produced with James Poyser (Lauryn Hill, the Roots, Jill Scott) and Bob Power (D'Angelo, A Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu). Her warm, jazz-influenced vocals are a natural result of her strong musical heritage (both of her parents are musicians) and by being nourished and encouraged by the profusion of music and musicians that surrounded her during her upbringing in Africa, India, and England. Gold Coast opens with "Words Hurt Too," a sad ballad about the insensitive remarks that can cause a great relationship to go wrong. Benson's sensitive interpretation captures the essence of heartbreak through her use of earthy blue notes and elongated rhythmic phrasings. Her voice is so unfeigned, and her lyrics are so heartfelt. On "The One," you can literally feel the sincerity in her voice as she asks "are you the one?" Benson also makes her listeners aware of her exceptional ...
