Somewhere around the turn of the 21st century, guys like David Gray (who'd already been laboring in obscurity for quite a while) and Five For Fighting made it hip (and profitable) to be a sensitive singer-songwriter for the first time since the '70s. Along those lines, John Mayer appeals to the kind of youngsters who are embarrassed by their parents' Dan Fogelberg collection but equally turned off by vociferous gangstas and misanthropic heavy rockers. ROOM FOR SQUARES (whose very title, not to mention Mayer's studied regular-guy cover pose, bespeaks the revenge of the nerds) accordingly trades in acoustic guitar-based folk-rock tempered with just enough 21st-century freshness to keep its practitioner in the Billboard charts (and his listeners' hearts). That's not to say Mayer's music is calculated; he's got a real feel for melody and a distinctive lyrical style. He also managed to be in the right place at the right time, and that's the key to any pop success.
This dualdisc features the entire album in 5.1 surround sound plus a 41 minute exclusive documentary about the album. Included is a brand new interview with John, plus never-before-seen footage including home movies, in-studio recordings, live and acoustic performances, behind-the-scenes, on-the-road, and backstage clips.

Room For Squares Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) If only... I give the album itself 5 stars. The 3 star rating for the DVD side of this disc is given for two reasons. One, the DVD side is region 1 only which does me no favours, having imported to Australia and not having a multi-region player. Luckily, I know someone who does.
Two, I was unimpressed with Jack Joseph Puig's work on the "Heavier Things" SACD surround mix and was looking forward to a better job this time. Unfortunately, I'm disappointed. The mix is, again, unimaginative and flat, which is a shame given John's multi-layered approach to his music and the way it's recorded. The potential should've been realised by someone like Eliott Scheiner etc. The air and space that surrounded the instruments on the original recording has vanished, which given that the instruments have now been given their own speakers and isolation, is disappointing. After waiting this long for a surround mix of "Room..", maybe I've raised my hopes too high. John, stay away from Southern Tracks studio and JJP. Everyone else, stick with the CD, I'm afraid. When Matchbox Twenty's first album became a hit, some critics lumped the band in with flash-in-the-pan rock acts of the day. What these early naysayers missed, of course, is that in vocalist Rob Thomas, Matchbox Twenty had one of the finest mainstream pop/rock songwriters in the business. Not only did Thomas rack up a string of hits with the Florida group, but he also co-penned "Smooth" from Santana's Grammy-winning 1999 comeback album, ...

Room For Squares songs
$13.15 This is a labor of love and of pain. Hopefully it reaches your soul and grabs hold. The songs represent different times of my life and different moods and flavors of life's ways. It is the very best I could do so hopefully it is good enough for you to spend your time listening to. Sit back and enjoy. Thank you very much. I was just informed that my songs were voted in the Best of the Best top 50 songs in 2007 on Kick Radio. Here are some other reviews: ThecelebrityCafe.com: Reviewer's Rating: 8Shawn Harris - Temptation - Temptation, from Shawn Harris, is filled with thought provoking songs with a rock vibe, and laden with profound metaphors that listeners will be gung ho to classify. Harris’s subterranean timbre might give listeners a chill as he sings powerful lyrics, but he will touch listeners to their core. On “Memories,” what sounds like electric guitar work starts off in the intro, as Harris goes on about recapitulating romantic times gone by and a relationship that has since ceased to be. There is also pounding drum play that culminates in giving this song a pop tone, as he sadly emotes lyrics such as, “The love we know is gone…All this time we spent alone.” “Keeping Hope Alive” begins with witty and quick guitar play that suspends in between chords. On this track, Harris sings about staying optimistic as he croons such lyrics as, “Not knowing where we’ll go…We’ll have to find the tide. We are movin’ on. We are movin’ on. We are movin’ on. We are movin’ on.” Piano play quells the melody of the song considerably, and it seems like Harris is trying to uplift listeners and tell them through song, that even though despair sets in at times, never give up on things getting better eventually. The title track has an air of spirituality to it which is immediately manifested, as somber sounding church bells ring throughout the song. Harris sings in a whispered tone on this song, as guitar work lightens the mood, but only a tad. Harris then goes on about how the vespers are calling to him as he expounds such lyrics as, “Bells ring for me. Hear them toll. Bells that ring for me…Find my soul. Find my soul…They now toll for me.” The message of this track might depress some listeners, as they might view Harris as singing ...
