Vio-Lence: Sean Killian (vocals); Robb Flynn, Phil Demmel (guitar); Dean Dell (bass guitar); Perry Strickland (drums). Almost by definition, every musical genre (and the Bay Area thrash metal scene was no exception) is launched by a small number of outstanding artists who go on to inspire a slew of second and third 'tier' acts (read: followers). Inevitably, these followers manage to ape the originators with varying success, only to fall prey to historical inconsequence shortly thereafter -- Vio-lence is a classic case study. Although never as talented as peers Death Angel or Testament, Vio-Lence survived by being one of the scene's most pro-active underground acts and a much better live act than your run of the mill Forbidden or Heathen. But with the glaring vocal shortcomings of vocalist Sean Killian cramping their style, committing their Exodus-inspired mosh anthems to vinyl on 1988's Eternal Nightmare would prove to be a greater challenge. Still, guitarists Robb Flynn and Phil Demmel manage to spark some excitement into the propulsive title track, the vicious "Kill on Command" and the raging crowd favorite "Serial Killer." ~ John Franck & Ed Rivadavia Vio-Lence Eternal Nightmare Songs Eternal Nightmare Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews THRASH AT IT'S BEST Best thrash album, fast from the beggining to then end, MASTERPIECE. One Of The ABSOLUTE Top 10 Thrash Albums Of All Time This is without question what Thrash was all about. Brutal as all h*ll, but in a way that you will remember it. Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, et al. were out and thriving in the mainstream when VIO-LENCE dropped this masterpiece under an obscure label in the late 80's. Had they pulled it off five years earlier [when ALL Thrash labels were obscure], every one of those bands would have been opening for them. For real. You will never forget VIO-LENCE once they've bopped you a good one [on first listen.] If you like the rawness of Artillery (just with better and faster riffs produced MEGA better) or, say, perhaps, the peddling aggression and absorbing riffs of Exodus's Piranha (and would have liked a full dose of it in magnified form) - this album is for you. A Top 10 Must Have of all Thrashdom. Submitted by Devachan (Lancing, MI) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Recorded between May 4, 1936 and March 10, 1948. Includes liner notes by Dan Morgenstern. Tread cautiously when the title of an album starts off with the phrase "the best of." It's not that the music on the album will be lacking, but that the introductory phrase is so subjective, it should make a prospective of the album, at the minimum, a bit wary; it would be somewhat more honest to title such compilations "Some of the Best of..." In any event, this Blue Note album, compiled with the usual knowing liner notes of the eminent Dan Morgenstern, collects Reinhardt sessions from May 1936, when the clouds of World War II were starting to engulf Europe, to March 1948. A survey of Reinhardt's performances over these tumultuous 12 years is an opportunity to see how the great guitar player's style changed and evolved. And evolve it did, but never did it lose its foundation, which was swing. It is at least arguable that no guitar player, including the great Charlie Christian, was as adept in making that instrument move as did Reinhardt. Morgenstern also wisely included many of Reinhardt's compositions on this compilation, reminding us that he was more than a fair-to-middlin' ...

Before opening track ‘Nightmare’ has finished, the band has proved themselves worthy of a record deal. Superb song writing, fantastic structure and a great guitar solo. Hard to believe this band is from California as they have the Swedish sound down pat. “Symphonic texture and dissonant crunch†are woven together in unbelievable fashion. Not only does Brandon McLaughlin have a perfectly suited raspy, infuriated voice, he plays the bass as well. Also of note is female guitarist Amy Zion.
