(1 Customer Review)
One would probably expect a band named Dew-Scented to tread the gothic, ambient metal netherworld, but these Germans, in fact, specialize in neo-death metal/thrash of the most frantic and no-holds-barred stripe imaginable. Quite a spectacle to be heard, typically maniacal creations like "Processing Life," "Out of the Self" and "Vortex" race by at utterly blinding speeds and with almost super-human intensity; their onslaught characterized by Leif Jensen's possessed-sounding screams, Florian Müller's crunchy hyper-staccato riffing, and Uwe Werning's octopus-like precision drumming (no slouch himself, bassist Alexander Pahl hangs on for dear life!) And elsewhere, additional highlights like "Turn to Ash," "Bled Dry," and "In Defeat" contribute spidery melodic guitar lines for an even more dazzling, At the Gates-derived dimension to the fierce spectacle. Having said that, however, it takes a real glutton for speed to actually sit through and digest these dangerously repetitive blasts. Dew-Scented is both reckless and ballsy to stack them 12 deep, thereby far exceeding the unofficial half-hour limit imposed on such releases by Slayer's form-defining Reign in Blood decades prior, and most listeners may find themselves praying for a break in the action so they can collect their thoughts. But Issue VI offers no such respite -- slowing down for anything beyond the requisitely brief synthetic intro piece is out of the question -- and if you don't think the pace is insane enough to begin with, they throw a minute-long Zeke cover at the end for good measure. The end result is impressive enough, but truly for speed-freaks only. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Issue VI album
$11.69 Sweden's Soilwork have walked the heavy metal high-wire throughout their short but prolific career. Extreme enough to convince some of the genre's more suspicious fans of their authenticity to the cause, they've also excelled at flirting with its more mainstream sensibilities, and, like every release before it, 2005's Stabbing the Drama is no different. Like a hyper-efficient assembly line, its songs connect components of the band's hometown melodic death metal to elements of neo-thrash velocity, to metalcore's innate simplicity, to even -- gasp! -- sketchy nu-metal devices (see "Weapon of Vanity," "Distance") in order to construct ...
| | Darkane Layers Of Lies CD (2005)
Issue VI CD music
$10.65 Prior to releasing their fourth album Layers of Lies in 2005, Sweden's Darkane had been sidelined for almost two years by everything from solo projects to physical injury to outright exhaustion; but the break did them a world of good and it's a noticeably refreshed -- though still imminently recognizable -- Darkane making their recorded return on this accomplished death metal/thrash album. And energetic death metal/thrash is exactly what we get, following a typically symphonic diversion to open up the LP (and later enriching closer "The Creation Insane"), but there's a lingering meatiness to Darkane's riffing (derived from their death metal roots, no doubt) that really distinguishes them from their mostly thrashier contemporaries, and marks them as something of a less fashion-prone proposition, to boot. At the same time, representative ...
| | Nevermore This Godless Endeavor CD (2005) Enhanced CD
Issue VI music CDs
$12.95 Nevermore's sixth album arrives bearing few surprises -- which, for a band less accomplished or too comfortable in their niche, would generally be seen as a negative attribute. Not here, as Seattle's finest mid-'00s heavy metal outfit (sorry Queensr˙che!) continue to set the bar for purist-leaning metal-heads on this side of the pond. As always, and not to take anything away from their cohorts (particularly drummer extraordinaire Van Williams), the soaring vocals of Warrel Dane and lead guitar heroics of Jeff Loomis act as twin beacons shining out from the band's gloriously metallic bulk. Furthermore, it's arguable if Dane (now almost completely divorced from his once too strident upper registers) has ever sounded quite this aggressive on any of Nevermore's earlier albums (witness his coarse roars on opener "Born (The Retribution of Spiritual ...

Cat Stevens' greatest hits were contained on the album of that title released in June 1975, though that set did not include the minor Top 40 entry "The Hurt" and Stevens made the singles chart four more times between 1976 and 1979, with "Banapple Gas," the Top 40 "(Remember the Days of The) Old Schoolyard," "Was Dog a Doughnut," and "Bad Brakes."
