Whereas Daniel Lanois's SHINE (2003) came a full decade after its predecessor, BELLADONNA follows Lanois's previous offering by only two years, marking a notable increase in the renowned producer/guitarist's solo activity. While SHINE featured vocal turns by frequent collaborators Bono and Emmylou Harris, this instrumental outing is built on the core of Lanois, drummer Brian Blade, and bassist Daryl Johnson. This trio has played together on so many occasions that they exhibit a musical telepathy evident in only the most seasoned ensembles. Here they use this connection to create gentle melodies that border on ambient territory, with an atmosphere that conjures up the gorgeous minimalism of desert landscapes. Throughout BELLADONNA, Lanois's delicate, nuanced guitar lines are at the forefront, reinforcing why he's not only a revered producer but a formidable solo artist as well.

Mojo (Publisher) (p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[With] the echoing, rippling 'The Deadly Nightshade' and the eerie 'Telco', where electronics drift through a simple melody played by Lanois and pianist Brad Mehldau." | | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Belladonna music CDs
$11.89 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.

| | Brian Eno Another Day On Earth CD (2005)
Belladonna songs
$15.25 At the time of ANOTHER DAY ON EARTH's release in 2005, it had been 28 years since ambient-music godfather Brian Eno had released an album of vocal-based songs (not counting a 1990 duo record with John Cale). Eno's '70s "pop" albums were part of a different age and represented a different Eno, one who'd ...
| | Kate Bush Aerial CDs (2005)
Belladonna album
$15.95 Since the 1980s Kate Bush has shouldered the unhappy burden of having to live up to her own brilliance: albums like THE DREAMING and HOUNDS OF LOVE set a high watermark for shimmering, adventurous, off-kilter pop. In the 12 years that transpired between the releases of 1993's THE RED SHOES and 2005's AERIAL, expectations ran high that Bush had something monumental in store. AERIAL does not necessarily meet those expectations, ...
| | Bobby Short Late Night At The Cafe Carlyle CD (1992)
Belladonna CD music
$9.79 After more than three decades, off and on, Bobby Short moved from Atlantic Records to the audiophile Telarc label, which wisely began the new association by tracking him to his lair, the Cafe Carlyle of the Carlyle Hotel on Manhattan's Upper East Side, where he had been entertaining patrons for a quarter-century. Captured over three nights in June 1991, the 66-year-old singer/pianist presented a ballad set appropriate to the "late night" billing of the title. He doesn't worry about repeating tracks from his many modest sellers for Atlantic, revisiting Rodgers & Hart's "Do I Hear You Saying 'I Love You'" (first heard on Speaking of Love in 1958) at the outset, and also including new versions of the Gershwins' "Love Is Here to Stay," Cole Porter's "I Get a Kick out of You," and the standard "Body and Soul," all of which have graced previous discs. It doesn't matter, of course. Short was more a live performer than a recording artist, despite his extensive catalog, and his job was to give you heartfelt, animated, and sophisticated readings of evergreens ...
| | Get Up Kids On A Wire CD (2002)
Belladonna music CDs
$11.49 For over half a decade, KC's Get Up Kids garnered a fan base, with music redolent of harder-edged melodic bands such as Superchunk and Jawbox. However, 2002's ON A WIRE, the outfit's first release in three years, finds the fivesome with a sound positively Beatle-esque, or at the very least Badfinger-esque, considering the latter's ...
