One thing about the Trouble Man label, they sure embrace unconventionality -- as evidenced by such experimental, patience testing releases as Double Leopards' A Hole Is True and Mouthus' Slow Globes. Whereas the former is best described as sounding like a seemingly never ending wind tunnel, the latter at least has some resemblance to music. But still, that's not saying much. An album chock-full of drones and randomly placed notes (which are so processed you can't tell which instrument is being played), Slow Globes sounds about as "made up on the spot" as you can get. Listened to at a loud volume, the album can perhaps best be used as the ultimate musical weapon -- guaranteed to clear a room in under five minutes flat. What did I do in a past life to deserve this? Please, make it stop already! ~ Greg Prato
Personnel: Maya (vocals).
The Wire (p.59) - "SLOW GLOBES's sonic variety is striking. Detuned acoustic plucks, distorted electric loops, muffled drum punches and disembodied groans all mesh into something deeper than the duo's previous, more upfront jams." The Wire (p.41) - Included in The Wire's "2005 Rewind: 50 Records Of The Year." Mouthus Slow Globes Songs Slow Globes Review

Slow Globes album
$15.19 Contains an untitled hidden track following "Untitled With Rain".
Recorded between 2000 & 2001. Includes liner notes by Glenn Jones.
Red Cross is the last consciously recorded 'new' John Fahey record. Intended for release in 2001 but met with delays following his ill health (and eventual death), Red Cross bookends an important discography, to say the least. In a manner perhaps typical of Fahey, this collection of self-produced pieces ends his career on a note both simple and probing. Ultimately, though, the prevailing tone is one of peaceful resolution and it is this feeling above all others that lends this session its haunting beauty. For the first time in years, we hear Fahey, if not without, then at least de-emphasizing the experimental, and at times downright menacing leanings, displayed on recordings such as Womblife and City of Refuge; favoring, instead, a more personal and reflective approach. Make no mistake, there are still a handful of effects and avant-garde dissonances on this recording but even these are used sparingly. This time, instead of being an end in and of themselves, these passages augment some of the most warm and vulnerable playing we've heard out of Fahey in a very long time. This is the sound of a man who, at the time of these recordings anyway, was only recently coming to grips with periods of his ...
| | Books Lost And Safe CD (2005) (Import)
Slow Globes CD music
$16.55 On their third full-length release, Lost and Safe, the Books show that they are back stronger than ever and from the beginning are subtly pushing new forms. Still present in the Books' song structures are string work and found sounds, but the inclusion of vocals from the bandmembers themselves gives Lost and Safe a depth that was only hinted at on Thought for Food and Lemon of Pink. The use of more vocals is never overbearing and works well with the other elements of speech, at times completing sentences or thoughts of particular samples -- the lyrics are printed with the sample text included as well. Rhythms and textures of strings and other various instruments seem to complement the found sounds and samples to a wonderfully haunting effect, as on "It Never Changes to Stop," "An Animated Description of Mr. Maps," and "Venice." The Books manipulate sound elements that are found or created by their string playing, which ...

| | Hilda Bronstein Sings Yiddish Songs Old And New CD (2007)
Slow Globes music CDs
$12.35 Part of a British revival of Yiddish culture, Hilda Bronstein's collection of Yiddish songs are to some degree what one would expect from a basic troupe performing at cultural and folk festivals. At the same time, however, the band (led by Merlin Shepherd) provides a good backing sound ranging from somber to joyous, but Bronstein herself is the star of the show, with a deep, throaty (almost Marlene Dietrich-like in some respects) intonation. The Polish dialect of Yiddish doesn't always lend itself to pretty pastoral sounds of course, but it seems that Bronstein is pushing the envelope even further than needed. Along ...
