| | Clive Bell Shakuhachi: The Japanese Flute CD Clive Bell Discography of CDs
Clive Bell is a well-known British shakuhachi player as well as a multi-instrumentalist. He studied the shakuhachi in Japan with Kohachiro Miyata, one of today's greatest Japanese shakuhachi masters. He also plays with Japanese koto player Rie Yanagisawa. Bell proposes here a solo CD for the shakuhachi, mixing well-known solo shakuhachi pieces from the honkyoku repertoire (i.e., the repertoire of the Zen Buddhist monks) with folk songs, as well as one of his own compositions. Bell shows an excellent mastery of this difficult instrument. ~ Bruno Deschênes

Shakuhachi: The Japanese Flute album
$12.09 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and impossible to ignore. 11:11 features 11 new compositions, dedicated to 11 musical artists (not all guitarists, either) who have had an influence on the duo. Recorded in Ixtapa, Mexico, the set was self-produced with the exception of two cuts, which were co-produced with John Leckie. Throughout, Rodrigo y Gabriela showcase their metal chops as part and parcel of their Mexican guitar heritage. They've not simply ...

Shakuhachi: The Japanese Flute CD music
$20.44 The U.K. label Soundway Records has vaulted itself to the head of the pack within the narrow field of African anthologies. They specialize in hard '60s and '70s funk, disco, and rock from West Africa, as heard on their Nigeria Special series as well as the earlier AFRO BABY and GHANA SOUNDZ sets, not to mention a disc devoted to the best-of Nigerian singer-guitarist Sir Victor Uwaifo. This volume, a two-CD set of funk and rock from Ghana all recorded between the late '60s and early '80s, is a churning sea of polyrhythms, chanted vocals, thick, distorted organ sounds, blaring horns, and scorching guitar that are equal parts James Brown and No Wave. A few songs ("Them Go Talk Of You," "I Go Die for You," "You Monopolize Me," "You Can Go") are sung ...
