Personnel: David Gibson (trombone); David Gibson ; Randy Brecker (trumpet, flugelhorn); Dwayne Burno (bass instrument); Joe Strasser (drums, drum); Wayne Escoffery (soprano saxophone); Rick Germanson (piano). Audio Mixer: Ben Ahrens. Recording information: The Studio, New York, NY (11/21/2004). Photographer: Ian Hendrickson-Smith. Arranger: David Gibson . With its esoteric titles ("Icarian Sea," "Hestia's Egress," "Serpents of Hera," et al.), one would think that trombonist David Gibson's recording was a suite that could possibly be the soundtrack for a Greek mythology film. Actually the nine songs, despite the forbidding titles, are primarily hard bop. Gibson's style is a little reminiscent of a slightly more modern Curtis Fuller, trumpeter Randy Brecker is always a strong asset in this type of setting, and Wayne Escoffery's soprano adds a great deal to the ensembles. The rhythm section keeps the music swinging and the ballads properly brooding. So despite the names of the songs, this is the type of set that can easily be enjoyed by fans of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, even if the music is not an exact copy. ~ Scott Yanow David Gibson Path To Delphi Songs | 1. | Path to Delphi, The |

| | Silkworm Firewater CD (1996)
Path To Delphi
$8.19 Silkworm: Andy Cohen (electric guitar, vocals); Tim Midgett (bass, acoustic guitar, vocals); Michael Dahlquist (drums). Recorded in Missoula, Montana and Chicago, Illinois. Personnel: Andy Cohen (vocals, guitar); Tim Midgett (vocals); Michael Dahlquist (drums). Recording information: Chicago, IL; Missoula, MT. It's a difficult thing to have too many cooks in the kitchen, especially when all of them are iron chefs. Joel Phelps' semi-forced exit made a big difference. On one hand, it was bad: Phelps was an integral part of the band since its inception. And on the other, it was good: the pared-down sound fit the band well, and that's quite evident on the four-sided Firewater. Left to two voices, the band produces its most cohesive and precise set, despite it being their most broad; Firewater clocks in with 16 tracks at an hour long. Not a minute is wasted, and everything sounds more measured and relaxed. Lyrically, the themes of each song tie in with a couple concepts in mind, not suffering from the somewhat schizo topics of previous LPs. As the lone guitarist, Cohen spreads his wings, turning in some lengthy solos. At times, his scorchy leads seem twice as loud as the bass and drums, but it's called for each time. Midgett's thick bass becomes more of a centerpiece than an anchor, sounding its thickest yet. Stripped bare to the degree of sounding awkward on the first few listens, a couple songs rely mainly on light rhythms ...

Path To Delphi
$9.85 Personnel: Bruce Fitzhugh (vocals); John Judkins (lap steel guitar). Recording information: Anthem Productions, Nashville, TN; Simeon Music, Nashville, TN. For a band so frivolously named, these guys sure take their grindcore seriously. A blistering, paint-peeling Molotov cocktail of an album, DANZA II roars with maximum intensity almost from start to finish. In fact, aside from a couple of amusing good-old-boy audio bits, II is a wall of machine-gun drumming, galvanized sheet metal guitars, and blood red vocals. With knotty song titles like "I Don't Mean to Impose But I Am the Ocean" and "Crunchy Black Did Me In At Midnight Madness," they're flexing a sly intelligence and sense of humor, but tech-metal played with this much intensity remains a fearsome thing. Murfreesboro, TN-based grindcore outfit Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza fills its first album for Metal Blade (the band's ...
