The post-psychedelic German phenomenon known as Krautrock pretty much starts here. The 1969 release PHALLUS DEI was the first album by Amon Duul II, who had split off from the more shambling, hippie-type communal outfit Amon Duul. The former had a darker, edgier spirit, and a greater sense of direction. That's not to say everything on PHALLUS DEI is tied up in a neat little package; it's a raw, bursting-at-the-seams sonic attack fully capable of melting ears at a thousand paces.
Like their Krautrock contemporaries, Amon Duul II were influenced by the psychedelic sounds of artists like Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane, but they transmuted that inspiration into something even more exploratory, open-ended, and primal. Bashing at guitars and drums like men possessed, they create a brain-frying firestorm of sound, cementing both their status as found fathers of Krautrock, and PHALLUS DEI's reputation as one of its definitive musical statements.
Digitally remastered edtion of the incredible debut by these Krautrock pioneers. This was one of only two albums to feature British-born bassist Dave Anderson (who would leave this band in order to join Hawkwind. This album was the result of the Amon Duul commune breaking up. The first half was more in the politics and community, but they did record a series of albums all under one jam. Then the other half of the Amon Duul was of course, far more musically inclined, and of course that was Amon Duul II. It's also pretty safe to say that "Phallus Dei" is to Amon Duul II what "Monster Movie" is to Can: both being their most '60s sounding albums. "Phallus Dei" is a wonderful debut and recommendation to those who like the more psychedelic end of Krautrock.

Though a commercial blip in its day, Krautrock has become one of the most enduring movements in music history, with countless indie acts namedropping the genre's most famous as influences. Now, as then, Hamburg's Faust gets the least love. Revisited Records hopes to change that with this long overdue reissue of the band's classic second long-player, SO FAR. One of the worst commercial failures in the history of Virgin Records, SO FAR was a slight capitulation to the marketplace after their mellow-harshing debut: there are some hints of accessible grooves (the mesmerizing opener, "It's A Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl") and melodicism (the Jimmy Page-ish guitar and flute of "On the Way to Adamae") to pull in the faint of heart.

This rather humdrum effort from Pink Floyd's keyboard player does have touches of his former band's haunting ambience, but the tracks on Broken China lazily skim along on shallow waves of new age-like synthesizer passages and lilting rhythms rather than engulf its concept of a man who is experiencing the repercussions of clinical depression, which is in itself Pink Floyd-like. The album is divided up into four sections, each representing a different stage of the character's mental illness. The idea is interesting enough and, while Wright's vocals are eerily reminiscent of Roger Waters, the concept fails to gain any momentum from one cycle to another. The music is dark...but too dark, and the lyrics are abstract...only they're too abstract. Wright gets too caught up in the complexities of his imagery, so much so that he fails to extend his concept outwardly in the form of music or message. Rather than jut out or take hold, the tracks all converge into each other with little or no rhythmic resurgence or elevation. "Reaching for the Rail" and "Breakthrough" are sung by Sinead O'Connor, one of the album's upsides, while oboe and cello add noticeable weight to the music's somberness in all the right places. Wright's first solo release, entitled Wet Dreams, is a much more entertaining effort, as is Zee-Identity, his 1984 collaboration with Dave Harris. ~ Mike DeGagne
