(1 Customer Review)
German art-hippie communards Amon Duul II were among the Krautrock genre's most unusual propositions. Less doggedly motorik in their approach than contemporaries Neu! and Harmonia, less self-consciously arty than groups like Faust and Can, their acid-drenched brand of psych-rock combined a wildly primitive streak with sophisticated prog-like arrangements. TANZ DER LEMMINGE, a brain-melting, epic double album set from 1971, stands as a definite statement of the group's early sound. Toning down the doom-laden guitar freakouts of their previous effort, YETI (1970), for a gentler, more acoustic palette, the follow up stretches out across four LP sides consisting of extended jamming, folksy vignettes, and freeform improvisations. TANZ. opens with an extended suite of acoustic jams cryptically titled "Syntelman's March of the Roaring Seventies." Building upon a thematically introduced melody through various connected movements, the song moves deliberately from gentle folksiness to fragmented, abstract weirdness. Meanwhile, "The Marilyn Monroe Memorial Church," a long form-free improvisation, bears almost no traces of the band's rock roots, recalling instead the proto-industrial soundscapes of groups like Kluster. While TANZ DER LEMMINGE marked the last album of Amon Duul II's most experimental phase, the sheer variety of approaches and sensibilities on display also makes it a recommended entry point for neophytes.
Digitally remastered edition. Fans predisposed to the sprawling psychedelic explorations of ADII's first three albums will often cite this one as their best. When you really need to blast off into space, you cannot beat "Tanz der Lemminge". This album is literally an explosion of music, all over the map, all completely mind warping: you have guitar jams that seem to emanate from the eternal ("Toxicological Whispering"); extended, otherworldy sonic explorations ("Chamsin Soundtrack"); structured suites full of strong dynamic shifts and haunting timbres ("Syntelman's March of the Roaring Seventies"); completely off the wall riff-based numbers with wacky vocals and brain-bending sound effects (all throughout "Restless Skylight-Transistor-Child").Uncut (p.74) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A]n incredible odyssey of sonic inventiveness." | Tanz Der Lemminge Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Can You widthstand this music? I used to own this double LP back when it was new, in a previous life...
I had completely forgotten what the music was, in terms of tunes, just remembered that it was weird. I had a three-hour drive to do, so I listened to it in the Audi driving down, with plenty of watts to spare.
Yikes! Now I understand why my mother was unable to listen to that kind of stuff. It's music designed to be widthstood, rather than listened to…
They divided the CD in tracks, each track corresponding to one side more or less. The first side is typical german, like Van Der Graf Generator, weird chords and lots of background noise, but I found it surprisingly acoustic, not too electronic. Just a bit hard to follow.
The second side…well…let me put it this way, it's a good thing I was wearing my seat belt. Like a cross between ZZ Top and David Bowie, with a little bit of King Crimson in the slow parts. Boy, these guys were rocking! It all came back to me then, this mood I was in at the time, deep yearning for something miraculous, with a finger in the socket for thrills…
Third side is all spaced out, like a confused dream, a lot like the early Pink Floyd. Excellent "impressionist" music. The fourth side recaps some of the themes and sounds more like typical music of the times.
Definitely a good trip down memory lane...

Tanz Der Lemminge album
$14.65 The post-psychedelic German phenomenon known as Krautrock pretty much starts here. The 1969 release PHALLUS DEI was the first album by Amon Duul II, who had split off from the more shambling, hippie-type communal outfit Amon Duul. The former had a darker, edgier spirit, and a greater sense of direction. That's ...

$11.49 After departing Gong in 1975, Steve Hillage followed the same route as everyone else, by making a solo album. Tanz Der Lemminge album
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds ...

$15.39 Amon Düül II's fifth studio album is a more conventional recording than most, though there's still a lot of the involved experimenting and dark undercurrent which sets the band apart from the mainstream, along with the off-kilter hooks and odd humor which saved them from being lumped alongside more serious (and less ...

Ultimate Christmas Album, Vol. 1: KLUV is an impressive 25-track collection of seasonal favorites assembled from a wide range of eras and genres. Highlights include Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," Chuck Berry's "Run Rudolph Run," Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas" and Gene Autry's "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer"; while not a definitive holiday collection, it includes enough hits and obscurities alike to be a worthwhile purchase nevertheless. ~ Marvin Jolly
Volume two of Collectables' Ultimate Christmas Album gathers more classic pop and rock holiday tunes, including the Beach Boys' "Little Saint Nick," Gene Autry's "Here Comes Santa Claus," and Diana Ross & the Supremes' "White Christmas." Most of this volume's best-known tracks are by traditional pop crooners, such as Dean Martin's "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!," Bing Crosby's "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas," and Burl Ives' "Holly Jolly Christmas." However, less-familiar tracks like the Echelons' "A Christmas Long Ago (Jingle Jingle)," Augie Rios' "Donde Esta Santa Claus," and Barry Gordon's "Nuttin' for Christmas" prevent the collection from being too predictable. It's not exactly a straightforward holiday-hits ...
