A longtime presence in the Canadian music scene, Leslie Feist contributed her breathy, expressive alto voice to releases by a diverse range of artists, including Peaches, Broken Social Scene, and the Norwegian duo Kings of Convenience. However, on Feist's solo debut, this talented singer/songwriter comes into her own with stories of love and light, and a melancholy kind of beauty not immediately apparent by the album's cryptic title, LET IT DIE.
Jazz-influenced and classically schooled, Feist possesses a voice with a distinctive intimacy often lacking in trained singers. This warmth complements the well-orchestrated compositions on LET IT DIE with an almost voyeuristic atmosphere, akin to hearing someone singing herself to sleep. On the bluesy spiritual "Lonely Lonely," rhythmic handclaps and sparsely picked guitar accompany Feist's haunting lilt, invoking the ghosts of Appalachia, while the Bee Gees' "Love You Inside Out" (here titled "Inside and Out") is set to an up-tempo disco beat. Feist's vocal agility enables her to sing straight French cabaret on "Tout Doucement" and smooth, soulful jazz on "Gatekeeper." The song that will make the tears fall, though, is the 1930s-esque, cinematic piano ballad "Now at Last," in which Feist dreamily sings "What makes winters lonely?/Now at last I know."
Japanese pressing features five bonus tracks over the US edition: 'One Evening' (Remixed By Vv), 'One Evening' (Solo Piano Version), 'Inside And Out' (Pearson And Usher Vocal Version), 'Amourissima' and 'L`amour Ne Dure Pas Toujours'. Feist is a Canadian songstress, hailing from Toronto. Her first album, Let It Die, is produced by Renaud Letang & Gonzales. Part of the Canadian collective band, Broken Social Scene, Gonzales convinced her to come to Paris to record this first album. Lush grooves are offset by a thoroughly enjoyable live performance, with members of the Germany-via-Toronto Kitty-Yo crew such as Peaches, Gonzales, & Taylor Savvy. Universal. 2005.

Philadelphia's An Albatross returns with We Are the Lazer Viking, an eight-minute contact high of fetid noise rock blither. "Electric Suits and Cowboy Boots" corrals one of those minutes. Inside, keyboards buzz chaotically as a manic guitar happily chomps at Eddie Geida's spazzy flashes of vocal -- it sounds like playing high-stakes Pac-Man while hanging upside down. Elsewhere (or a minute-and-twelve-seconds later, as it were), "Get Faster, Cry for Happy" and the aptly-named "Revolutionary Politics of Dance" accelerate the dancefloor action to ludicrous speed before setting the strobe lights to 'stun'. An Albatross and producer Wharton Tiers swirl around those beats and neon lights until you're not just high but outright sick as a frothing dog, and the whole sticky mess spits back up like 11 pairs of pre-chewed, fun-size wax lips. This is An Albatross' niche, as tiny, loud, and odd as it is. Jarring brevity, assaulting instrumentation, salacious sarcasm, and social comment vagary are part of the act for most spazz-rock dealers, including Geida and his people.
