| | Feist Let It Die CD - Import Feist Discography of CDs
Japanese edition adds five tracks and features different cover art.
A longtime presence in the Canadian music scene, Leslie Feist contributed her breathy, expressive alto voice to releases by a diverse range of artists, including Peaches, Broken Social Scene, and the Norwegian duo Kings of Convenience. However, on Feist's solo debut, this talented singer/songwriter comes into her own with stories of love and light, and a melancholy kind of beauty not immediately apparent by the album's cryptic title, LET IT DIE.
Jazz-influenced and classically schooled, Feist possesses a voice with a distinctive intimacy often lacking in trained singers. This warmth complements the well-orchestrated compositions on LET IT DIE with an almost voyeuristic atmosphere, akin to hearing someone singing herself to sleep. On the bluesy spiritual "Lonely Lonely," rhythmic handclaps and sparsely picked guitar accompany Feist's haunting lilt, invoking the ghosts of Appalachia, while the Bee Gees' "Love You Inside Out" (here titled "Inside and Out") is set to an up-tempo disco beat. Feist's vocal agility enables her to sing straight French cabaret on "Tout Doucement" and smooth, soulful jazz on "Gatekeeper." The song that will make the tears fall, though, is the 1930s-esque, cinematic piano ballad "Now at Last," in which Feist dreamily sings "What makes winters lonely?/Now at last I know."
Japanese pressing features five bonus tracks over the US edition: 'One Evening' (Remixed By Vv), 'One Evening' (Solo Piano Version), 'Inside And Out' (Pearson And Usher Vocal Version), 'Amourissima' and 'L`amour Ne Dure Pas Toujours'. Feist is a Canadian songstress, hailing from Toronto. Her first album, Let It Die, is produced by Renaud Letang & Gonzales. Part of the Canadian collective band, Broken Social Scene, Gonzales convinced her to come to Paris to record this first album. Lush grooves are offset by a thoroughly enjoyable live performance, with members of the Germany-via-Toronto Kitty-Yo crew such as Peaches, Gonzales, & Taylor Savvy. Universal. 2005.
CD contains 5 bonus tracks.Entertainment Weekly (No. 819, p.88) - "Sly folkie, slow-jazz seductress, sparkling pop pixie--[Feist's] kaleidoscopic talents shift almost as constantly as her attention..." - Grade: A- Magnet (p.92) - "LET IT DIE brims with sweet melodies, gentle bossa-nova/folk tendencies and polite electronics." CMJ (No. 910, p.4) - "[Feist] makes lovely music stripped of trends and obvious cues, channeling dashes of Billie Holiday and all that old-school jazz..." Let It Die Review

Let It Die CD music
$6.29 Margaret Edson's Pulitzer-winning script is faithfully adapted to the small screen by director Mike Nichols and star Emma Thompson in this HBO special. Thompson plays Vivian Bearing, a professor of 17th Century poetry specializing in "the Holy Sonnets of John Donne." The intellect is everything to Vivian--which is why, when she is diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer--"there is no stage five"--she agrees to undergo aggressive chemotherapy in the name of cancer research. "You must be very tough," her doctor tells her, and Vivian is nothing if not tough--a tough professor who is tough on her students. Yet as her treatment--and her cancer--progresses, Vivian finds ...

| | Feist Open Season CD (2006)
Let It Die album
$8.49 Capitalizing on the success of her 2004 solo release, LET IT DIE, Fiest released OPEN SEASON in 2006, a collection of remixes and collaborations. OPEN SEASON takes the breezy, jazzy, understated songs from LET IT DIE and moves them in several new directions, creating an experience that is more varied and just as arresting as its predecessor.
It doesn't hurt that Fiest is well liked in the music scene (she counts Peaches and Broken Social Scene among her fans and cohorts), and it's this status that gives the remixes on OPEN SEASON ...
| | Robert Plant Nine Lives CDs (2006) With DVD; Remastered; Box Set
Let It Die CD music
$66.59 Listening to the whole of Plant's catalogue, what impresses most is its variety and range. Beginning with 1982's PICTURES AT ELEVEN and continuing through 2005's MIGHTY REARRANGER, NINE LIVES offers up atmospheric grooves, 1950's-style pop, synth-driven new wave, Middle Eastern drones, straight blues, and a healthy dose of post-Zeppelin thunder. Plant's voice morphs too, from dispassionate popster to banshee wailer to retro crooner and elsewhere, never letting the shadow of his former band determine his stylistic choices. Beautiful packaging and a comprehensive booklet sweeten the deal, making this a must for collectors or anyone looking to explore Plant's work in depth.
The colossal legend of Led Zeppelin looms so mightily over the history of rock that it's sometimes easy to overlook the fact that Robert Plant has had a solo career that's outdistanced Zep in terms of longevity and output. NINE LIVES, a 10-disc ...
| | Avalon Joy CD (2000)
Let It Die music CDs
$9.89 JOY is a holiday offering from Christian pop quartet AVALON. Don't misunderstand, though. This isn't Bing Crosby-style Christmas music. Avalon is unquestionably contemporary, and whether they're tackling a chestnut (pun intended) like "The Christmas Song" or performing original Yuletide compositions, they do it their way. Pure pop is the ...

| | Albatross We Are The Lazer Viking CD (2003)
Let It Die CD music
$8.45 Philadelphia's An Albatross returns with We Are the Lazer Viking, an eight-minute contact high of fetid noise rock blither. "Electric Suits and Cowboy Boots" corrals one of those minutes. Inside, keyboards buzz chaotically as a manic guitar happily chomps at Eddie Geida's spazzy flashes of vocal -- it sounds like playing high-stakes Pac-Man while hanging upside down. Elsewhere (or a minute-and-twelve-seconds later, as it were), "Get Faster, Cry for Happy" and the aptly-named "Revolutionary Politics of Dance" accelerate the dancefloor action to ludicrous speed before setting the strobe lights to 'stun'. An Albatross and producer Wharton Tiers swirl around those beats and neon lights until you're not just high but outright sick as a frothing dog, and the whole sticky mess spits back up like 11 pairs of pre-chewed, fun-size wax lips. This is An Albatross' niche, as tiny, loud, and odd as it is. Jarring brevity, assaulting instrumentation, salacious sarcasm, and social comment vagary are part of the act for most spazz-rock dealers, including Geida and his people. What defines We Are the Lazer Vikings is its weirdly danceable -- straight up enjoyable -- bits and pieces. And that's saying quite a bit, especially when the album croaks out in compacted ...
