RETREAT features original material from punk band the Rakes' 2004 album CAPTURE/RELEASE.
This Japanese edition EP has six tracks, including non-album songs "Dark Clouds," "Strasbourg" (live at Rough Trade), and a demo of "Ausland Mission."
Produced by Paul Epworth (renowned for his work with Bloc Party, Maximo Park, and other early-2000s U.K. post-punk acts), the RETREAT EP marks the U.S. debut of the Rakes. Often sounding like a less-polished version of the Futureheads, this London quartet fits in snugly with all of the aforementioned bands, with their angular guitar lines, danceable rhythms, and tales of middle-class ennui. The strength of the songs here (particularly the hard-charging "Retreat," the fuzzed-out "Strasbourg," and the snotty pop of "22 Grand Job") earned the group an opening slot on tour with Franz Ferdinand and created anticipation for their impending full-length disc.
CD contains 1 bonus track.

$19.98 It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live ...

Retreat CD music
$9.99 I AM. SASHA FIERCE represents another change of pace for Beyoncé. Unlike the relatively streamlined, retro-soul inflected B'DAY, I AM... is a sprawling two-disc set designed to reflect two conflicting sides of Beyoncé's musical personality. The first disc sports reflective, sometimes moody ballads, while the second, attributed to Beyoncé's brash alter ego, Sasha Fierce, is loaded with propulsive dance-floor fillers. Except for this stylistic divide, I AM. pays only nominal attention to its supposed concept, focusing instead on a set of excellent, radio-ready songs--neatly avoiding ...
| | Captain Beefheart London 1974 CD (2001) (Import) Netherlands
Retreat music CDs
$12.65 This live recording of Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band was taken from a London date during one of the more fierce peaks of the band's existence, the same period that produced the overlooked classic masterpiece Clear Spot. Though the session was intended to produce a live album for Virgin, the release never materialized, though the versions of "Mirror Man" and "Upon the Me Oh My" came out of the 1975 Virgin sampler V. Thanks to the obscure Portuguese imprint Movie Play Gold, highlights from the concert made it onto CD at a concise 40 minutes. The disc features nine tracks of full-tilt Magic Band mayhem on "Full Moon Hot Sun," "Sugar Bowl," "Crazy Little Thing," "This Is the Day," "New Electric Ride," as well as older '60s classics like "Abba Zabba" and "Peaches." The CD has exceptional sound quality, while some other live Captain Beefheart from the same period fares a little rough in recording quality. This comes highly recommended as an opportunity to hear the Magic Band at an all-time high. ~ Skip Jansen
First, total accountability: this is not "the" Magic Band. This is the group Don Van Vliet assembled with the help of his manager when the original Magic Band had literally walked out on him over financial disputes. No Zoot Horn Rollo or Winged-Eel Fingerling here, folks. This tour was in support of Unconditionally Guaranteed, it and its successor, Bluejeans & Moonbeams were supposed to be commercial breakthroughs for Captain Beefheart, and the gig took place at the Royal Theater in Drury Lane in 1974. The albums were recorded and produced very commercially, but the money never fell down from heaven -- or flowed from punters' pockets, either. The band -- guitarists Dean Smith and Fuzzy Fuscaldo (from Baby Huey's band), bassist Paul Uhrig, drummer Ty Grimes, keyboardist Michael Smotherman (he and Smith had played with Billy Joe Royal in his brief stint as a country music star), and reeds and woodwinds veteran ...

| | Ari Herstand Whispering Endearments CD (2008)
Retreat album
$13.69 Ari Herstand is a Minneapolis music junkie. 'There was a period where I attended 4-5 local concerts a week for about 2 years,' he mentions. Herstand, who just returned from an East Coast Tour and a two week stint at Milwaukee's Summerfest, is unmistakably proud of the city's music scene from where he now calls home: 'It's the best music scene in the world!'Looking at the credits on Herstand's second studio album and third release to date, Whispering Endearments, his love for the Minneapolis music scene is no secret. Front man and principle songwriter of This World Fair, Chris Kalgren, co-produced the album with Herstand while Minnesota based, Grammy nominated Paul Marino (Haley Bonar, Chris Koza, Desdamona, The New Congress, Ann Nesby) engineered. Many other Minneapolis artists also make appearances throughout the album.Herstand, who has opened for national artists such as Ben Folds, Cake, Sister Hazel, Soul Asylum, The Bodeans, Joshua Radin and Matt Nathanson, took an extended break from the road to record this new album. Whispering Endearments displays an incredible maturation from his first two releases. Spending nearly 6 months creating the new album, working with an investor instead of a record label and no time frame, Herstand created the record completely void of time, money and industry constraints. Meticulously working to find the perfect guitar and drum tones, arranging and rearranging instrumentations and challenging himself vocally, Herstand along with Kalgren and Marino worked until excellence was achieved for Whispering Endearments. The songs are filled with memorable hooks, but never cliche. The instrumentations are brilliantly arranged and the performances are at the highest quality of musicality. The blend of acoustic, rock, pop, folk, jazz and funk are all tied together by Herstand's mature songwriting and passionately delicate and beautifully distinctive vocals. The album opens with a metaphorical, lost love 'bell' anthem, rich with holiday imagery and sentiments, juxtaposed with helplessness and regretful loss. 'One Bell' aptly sets the tone for the rest of the joyously, bittersweet album. The first single released off of Whispering Endearments, 'Last Day,' deals with a carpe diem mantra while keeping it inquisitively personal: 'If you knew this ...
| | Bobby Birdman New Moods CD (2009)
Retreat CD music
$13.15 During the six years between his second album, 2003's Born Free Forever and his third, 2009's New Moods, Bobby Birdman modeled, became a fixture of Los Angeles' art, music, and fashion scenes, and released two EPs that moved his music in an electro-pop direction that became ubiquitous while he was working on other projects. Though New Moods' songs certainly owe something to the Heart Caves and Giraffes & Jackals EPs' synth pop, the album is more eclectic than that. Birdman reaches back to the more intimate sounds of Let Me In and Born Free Forever as well, bridging the different sides of his music in sometimes jarring but often appealing ways. While the opening track "Only for a While" is as bright and whimsical as anything off of Heart Caves, "Well Sprung"'s brooding and "Weighty Weight"'s ...
