If you're afraid of commitment, Miditerranean Pads might not be for you. To get the music's full effect, it is recommended that you turn off the lights, fire up a big candle (a lava lamp'll do in a pinch), and let Klaus Schulze's kaleidoscopic arrangements weave their magic. But -- and here's where the commitment part comes in -- the disc runs just over 70 minutes, which might tax the limits of the novice navel-gazer. Fortunately, the music commands attention, consuming the senses immediately rather than slowly adding elements for the first minute or two. Schulze's earlier work has often seemed aloof, so listeners may be surprised to find themselves heavily invested in "Decent Changes." The percussion powers the music like a steam engine designed by Maurits Escher (and that's without looking at the cover), arrhythmic and improbable at times yet somehow logical. The "changes" in the piece are abrupt, but they shift the arrangement to show off different vantage points (and it's here that the kaleidoscope analogy comes into play). For 30 minutes, "Decent Changes" provides a lush musical landscape that will engage the attentive listener from beginning to end. "Miditerranean Pads" produces a very different effect by using soprano and piano as its primary colors. The pace is slower and the music evocative; the closest comparison may be the early work of Harold Budd. "Percussion Planante" returns to the formula of the first piece, though the ride is rougher, the currents swifter, the percussion noisier. Initially, the song recalls the contemporary work of Tangerine Dream (their "Flashflood" in particular comes to mind), but Schulze soon shifts his attention to the diabolical, stirring the lost souls of men and women fallen from some fantastical city of sin (or maybe that's just the candle talking). Again, listening to this record with half an ear isn't half as much fun as giving it your full attention, so don't expect to just pop the disc in while you wash the dishes and be magically transported. Better to set aside even half an hour and get lost in one of the longer tracks. Miditerranean Pads reveals a mastery of the electronic form; if you've found some of Schulze's earlier work too abstract, you might want to re-approach him from this angle. ~ Dave Connolly

Digitally remastered special edition of the Schulze classic, housed in a stylish digipak with deluxe booklet with new liner notes and photos. Includes a bonus track, "Percusion Planante" which was featured on the first CD edition of this album. This version includes a longer (by 2 minutes) version of "Decent Changes" for the first time.

Hatfield and the North's second LP stands as a high watermark for the prog rock associated with England's Canterbury scene and, while filled with stunning musicianship, demonstrates both the strengths and some of the weaknesses of the Hatfield style. Dave Stewart on keyboards, Phil Miller on guitar, Richard Sinclair on bass and vocals, and Pip Pyle on drums (supplemented by a few guest instrumentalists and the ever-ethereal Northettes with their "la la" backing vocals) generally show an admirable sense of restraint and, like their Canterbury peers, ...

Vanity of Sounds was originally released in 2000, as disc one of the ten-CD box set Contemporary Works I. SPV's Revisited subsidiary gave it its first single release in 2005, early in its career-encompassing reissue program of Klaus Schulze's discography. The album consists in four long pieces (between 15 and 23 minutes each). Compared to the four-volume Ballett series (also taken from the Contemporary Works I box set), the music here is more consistent and closer to Schulze's long-established sound -- no Arabic influences here, no techno episodes. In fact, Vanity of Sounds marks a return to an earlier sound, closer to Dreams and Miditerranean ...

Miditerranean Pads album

This record is presented with thanks to the People, Places & Things that were the Chicago jazz, blues and improvised music scene from 1954-1960, especially the under-recorded and under-recognized folks that not only kept the music alive, but helped move it to new horizons. Assembled here are interpretations of tunes written by artists from or during their time in Chicago, as well as a few originals dedicated to the era. These are not literal interpretations, but rather adjusted to the feel of the modern city and its sound.

A little info on the tunes:The vibrant drummer Walter Perkins led Chicago\'s most noted hard bop band, The MJT+3. With the stunning line up of Harold Mabern, Frank Strozier, Willie Mitchell and co-leader Bob Cranshaw, these musicians would serve in some of the most historic jazz settings of the coming decades. Although attributed to the entire band, this MJT tune, \"Is-it\", was most likely a Frank Strozier composition.

Wilbur Campbell was not only one of the most sought after drummers in Chicago (Gene Ammons, Johnny Griffin, Dexter Gordon, and Eddie Harris, to name a few), but also an accomplished piano and vibraphone player. This tune, simply titled \"Wilbur's Tune Number 2\", originally appeared on The Ira Sullivan record Nicky's Tune.

Written by the great alto player John Jenkins, \"Be-Ware\" was a dedication to the ubiquitous bass player Wilbur Ware. Although one of the most recorded hard bop players, Ware led only one session, The Chicago Sound, where this tune appears.

\"People\": For Frank Strozier, Nicky Hill and King Fleming\"Status Quo\" may be the greatest opening track of the hard bop era. Featured on the Clifford Jordan/John Gilmore album Blowing In From Chicago, it was penned by another of the city\'s fine tenor men, the under-recorded John Neely.

Although Sun Ra may have been from Saturn, it wasn\'t until his time in Chicago that this become a revelation. We perform two Ra tunes, which developed during his Chicago years, \"Planet Earth\", and \"Saturn\", which many consider The Arkestra's theme song.

Singer, poet and activist Oscar Brown Jr. seemed to embody the artistic ...
