$37.25 This is the re-release of the old Barclay album by the same name from the 1970s, now taking advantage of better mastering techniques. The album is split into two discs, stylistically the "Jazz Side" and the "Dance Side." Admittedly, this is a rather difficult task to undertake, dividing the songs into their components. Fela had a huge amount of jazz influence embedded in his music, including the songs made primarily for dancing. And even the more free jazz-oriented numbers were created in part to make people dance. As such, separating the two is an endeavor doomed in part. Despite this difficulty, the split is made decently well, with the more outstandingly leaning numbers on either side being displayed for the listener. The jazz side includes "JJD," "Roforofo Fight," "Sorrow Tears and Blood," "Water No Get Enemy," and "Just Like That." ...

| | Rikk Agnew All By Myself CD (1982)
Cowboy Viado CD music
$9.65 Snarkily titled after Eric Carmen's '70s solo hit but thankfully not featuring a cover of that song, Agnew's solo debut actually lives up to its title completely, as he plays every instrument on the record, creating a great one-man band sound (with the help of Adolescents producer Thom Wilson) as a result. Possessed of a good mid-range punk voice -- no sneering or bellowing, not really singing but not just talking over the songs either -- he creates the same basic rush he brought to his early stints in the Adolescents and the faster Christian Death songs he worked on, but with a slightly poppier bent at points that perfectly balances sass and strength, while not being afraid to experiment from time to time either (as the lengthy album closer "Section 8" shows). "Everyday," the one track Agnew cowrote with someone else (his brother and fellow Adolescents veteran Frank), is a great example of this, with its gentler pace, tight arrangement that lets some space into the playing, and Agnew's actual singing, which succeeds in a slightly winsome way. The leadoff track is yet another Orange County punk classic from Agnew's pen, "OC Life," specifically naming some particularly crap cities worthy of contempt, and from there he's off relentlessly detailing some particularly screwed up lives and problems with a withering eye. More than most who have worked in punk, Agnew can capture a careful empathy when at his best, backed up with memorable music to boot (the fragile keyboard arrangement that fills out the sound on the remarkable character study "10" is particularly lovely touch). "Surfside" sneaks in a surf riff (but of course!) into its otherwise trebly ...

| | Turisas Varangian Way CDs (2007) With DVD
Cowboy Viado CD music
$10.79 Finnish sword-wielding berserkers Turisas cemented their name within the hallowed halls of the Viking metal scene in 2004 with the seminal Battle Metal, creating an entire subgenre fueled by what can only be described as "over the top everything." Churning out records to accompany muted viewings of 300 or the Lord of the Rings trilogy is nothing new (Manowar has been it doing it for years), but on the ambitious Varangian Way the group takes it one step further, creating its own unique narrative. Built around the epic journey of a group of traders, mercenaries, and pirates ("Varangians") exploring trade routes between their 9th century homeland and Constantinople, Varangian Way is infinitely more cinematic in scope than Battle Metal, employing narration, accordions, and massive choirs (the group still relies on main man Warlord Nygård's tasteful keyboard work for the orchestral bits) to move the story along. The rousing "To Holmgard and Beyond" sets the pace, taking the Battle Metal formula of brass lead, group vocals, and crushing guitars to the next level. It's a catchy call to arms that makes some of the more serpentine art-rock sections like "In the Court of Jarisleif" easier to digest. That said, the most eclectic number of the set, the epic closer "Miklagard Overture" might be one of the most successful forays into progressive fantasy metal in some time, employing an army of memorable melodies, unexpected left turns, and a pretty impressive death growl on the chorus. Like everything on Varangian Way, it strikes the perfect balance between power metal, folk and symphonic metal, and while some listeners may be put off by all of the Renaissance Fair excess or the concept of grown men in pelts singing "Come with us to the south/write your name on our roll," they need not worry, as this delicious feast of strong ale, stale bread, and "flesh from the beasts that stalk us in the night" wasn't made for them. [Varangian Way was also released with a bonus "Director's Cut CD/DVD" that included a 'Single Edit' of the track "To Holmgard and Beyond" as well as a series ...
