With his partner Pimp C struggling with legal problems and eventually incarceration, fellow UGK member Bun B was forced to go it alone. His Mddl Fngz project was satisfying and his guest appearances are always welcome, but with Trill he establishes himself as an exciting solo artist benefiting from both experience and the hunger of someone just joining the game. There's a ridiculously star-studded guest list to come, but before thrilling the listener with Jay-Z, Ludacris, Ying Yang Twins, Mannie Fresh, and even Too Short, Bun B takes the first highlight for his own, delivering "Bun" like an up-and-comer on his first big mixtape. Beating Mike Jones and Paul Wall at their own game, B follows up his new anthem with two hooky hanging-out tracks, the celebrity-packed "Get Throwed" with Z-Ro and Jay-Z and the magnificent "Draped Up" featuring Lil' Keke and referencing DJ Screw for Southern hood authenticity. As the album progresses with one inspired guest appearance after another and 31 flavors of hip-hop for the tasting, Trill becomes the more street-level alternative to its guest star Lil Jon's grand Crunk Juice. True thug Z-Ro has an incredibly stuffed discography but his profile is surprisingly low. His style is hard -- think Nate Dogg with a Southern flavor -- but not underground or cerebral enough to keep him from blowing up big time, so what's the problem? If there's any justice, the solid Let the Truth Be Told will put the man over the top. Guest spots from Ashanti, Paul Wall, and Juvenile should help too, but if this all seems like a forced play for the mainstream, it's not. Seventeen songs and the album never sounds anything less than inspired, necessary even. Z-Ro's verbal sparring with Devin the Dude makes "The Mule" a standout, "Platinum" and "Everyday, Samethang" are sure to figure into your next mixtape, but the highlights keep coming and filler isn't even an issue. TP.3 Reloaded is thematically opposite to Happy People/U Saved Me. The first hour of the album is mostly about getting rowdy and getting it on, full of some of the clumsiest and lewdest lyrics R. Kelly has written. Funniest of all is the relatively tame "Kickin' It With Your Girlfriend," where Kelly apologizes to his woman for cheating on her, says he didn't mean to cause pain, proceeds to tell her about all about the affair, and in a roundabout way suggests that it's her fault for allowing him to cross paths with her girlfriend. With one or two exceptions, all of these songs are second and third rate by his standard. And then there's the other part of TP.3.
