Bluesman Alvin Youngblood Hart's Motivational Speaker is his first outing since Down in the Alley, his stellar, acoustic collection of covers from 2002. Cut in Memphis with a very electric trio that includes Gary Rasmussen (former Rationals and Sonic's Rendezvous bassist) and drummer Ed Michaels, the album is a hard-edged, wooly, dirt-under-the-nails affair. Hart produced the set himself and brought in a number of guests including Jim and Luther Dickinson, Audley Freed, Richard Ford, Susan Marshall, Richard Rosenblatt, and Jim Spake. The album kicks off with a nasty redo of Hart's signature tune "Big Mama's Door," with slide guitars wrangling and popping before exploding into the title cut, another original that notches the volume level up two and pushes the raw, funky quotient through the roof. Hart's cover of "In My Time of Dying" is another traditional tune, reclaimed from Led Zeppelin (the first was "Gallow's Pole" on his debut). The sonics here are reminiscent of Neil Young & Crazy Horse until Hart begins to sing: his blues wail is emotionally taut, open, low and primal. Likewise, his own cover of Otis Redding's "Nobody's Fault but Mine" (Zep did it on Presence) features a raunchy horn section and scorches with its loose, almost unglued manner adding a whole new dimension. However, rather than merely being heard as a way to set the record straight, it is just as valid to listen to these tunes as a tribute to Led Zep. Despite his instinct for great covers -- including Paul Rodgers' "The Worm" and "How Long Before I Change My Clothes," or the reverent honky tonk read of Johnny Paycheck's "The Meanest Jukebox in Town," it's Hart's originals and the over-the-red-line attack this band plays them with that are the album's true standouts -- check the guitar freak-out on "Shoot Me a Grin" and the stomping, riff-heavy blues-rock of "Necessary Roughness." Motivational Speaker is a solid, rootsy raucous chapter in the unfolding saga of the era's most diverse bluesman. ~ Thom Jurek

While India's many drums, cymbals, bells, wooden clappers, double reed horns, and members of the lute family all reach back through many centuries toward the very dawn of civilization, the simple bamboo flute is emblematic of Lord Krishna himself. As India's greatest 20th century musical ambassador to the world, Ravi Shankar is to be commended for having conscientiously produced an album devoted to the master drummers of India as well as this marvelous collection of classical and folk ensembles featuring the North Indian bamboo flute, known as the bansri or bansuri. This instrument has six finger holes; the South Indian venu has seven or eight. The album features master flutist Vijay Raghav Rao, with accompaniments by tabla master Alla Rakha and various unnamed sitar players. The two ragas ("Raga Malkauns: Alap and Ghat in Jhaptal" and "Meditational Raga of Northern India") are divinely beautiful and soothing to the nervous system. Junior Parker has had quite the career, perfecting his harmonica playing at the feet of Sonny Boy Williamson and impressing crowds around his Memphis home with his smooth blues vocals, including a talent-scouting Ike Turner, who brought the artist to Modern Records to record his debut single in 1952. The following year, Parker and his backing Blue Flames were ensconced at Sun, cutting the driving "Feelin' Good" single, which boogied straight to Number Five in the R&B chart, as well as the loose-limbed "Love My Baby" and simmering "Mystery Train," the latter later covered by Elvis Presley. But even with this success, Parker decamped to Duke before the year was out. However, it would take four more years before he reentered the charts, beginning with the sweet, swinging jazz of the title track, followed by 1958's urgent R&B ode to "Sweet Home Chicago," and finishing out the decade with the blues spectacular "Five Long Years." These three hits were all recorded earlier in the decade, along with all the tracks on this set, spanning the period from June 1953 through a batch believed to have been cut in 1955. Unusually for the compilers at Arkama, who tend to be sticklers for detail, the tracks are not chronological nor are personnel details supplied for half the numbers.
