He is met with prejudice by the other contestants, wealthy snobs who look down upon his low economic stature. When he claims the title, he earns the respect of the General and the General's wife (Andress), who wants to repay him in ways that the General might not appreciate. Peppard, on the other hand, does. Fantastic aerial combat highlights the film, although the scenes between the two lovers don't hurt matters much.

This relatively little-known film is widely hailed by fans of the macabre. Truly ahead of its time, NIGHTMARE ALLEY is set in the gritty, surrealistic world of traveling carnivals, where eccentric people of all possible varieties interact on a daily basis. In a departure from his usual roles as the Hollywood leading man, handsome Tyrone Power plays a morally questionable circus apprentice determined to climb the carnival ladder no matter what the price. Powers shows immense range in what was arguably his finest role ever as the sometimes unrecognizably scruffy circus man with a liking for the bottle. Director Edmund Goulding (DARK VICTORY) gives the carnival setting a dark, somber feel that contradicts the film's more upbeat ending. In spite of this ending tacked on by the studio system, NIGHTMARE ALLEY remains with the viewer even after it's over, haunting them with its bleak images and melancholy mood.

Young Ziggy Watson (Harris) abruptly joins forces with a couple of Gen-X holdup men robbing the jewelry store where she works. She thinks that the outlaw lifestyle can help her hook up with the father whom she has never met. Somewhat arbitrarily, she has determined that the long-absent dad is Frank Drake (McHattie), a desperate and bewildered middle-ager, vengeful after having been ripped off bigtime by a phone-scam tycoon (Gossett Jr.). Then there's Ziggy's devoted boyfriend Walter (Woolvett), who follows doggedly after her. These characters (and the police) chase, betray and shoot at each other, and the brisk pace never slackens, even if your sympathy for the consience-free heroine does. Partially-produced by actor Priestley, it's a Quentin Tarentino-inspired road thriller, sure, but not bad for the breed, and can sit comfortably on the shelf next to PULP FICTION.
