Though it failed to equal the mostly novelty-based sales of Loudness' first internationally distributed album Thunder in the East, Lightning Strikes had handily managed to translate the band's Japanese-bred heavy metal into a more easily digestible recipe for Western audiences. Because this progress didn't translate into sales, however, their record company, Atco, felt the need to force the band's hand toward an even more pop-metal direction when it came time to record their next effort. Yet, while producer Max Norman's work on Lightning Strikes had merely served to trim the excess fat from Loudness' rather busy compositions, new hire Andy Johns would show no such restraint in his mission to completely disfigure the band's sound. 1987's misguided Hurricane Eyes was the result. With their generic riffs and big, dumb choruses, formulaic singles like "This Lonely Heart" and "Take Me Home" push the envelope of pop-metal overkill with tragic consequences, while full-throttle thrashers topped with cold-war lyrics like "S.D.I." and "Strike of the Sword" seem equally desperate in their attempt to swing the balance in the opposite direction. To make matters worse, former Angel keyboard player Gregg Giuffria looms over the proceedings like a true "angel of crap," lending a dubious helping hand to Loudness' musical act of hara-kiri. Needless to say, record buyers could have cared less about all this behind-the-scenes maneuvering, and the record was a resounding flop. After supplanting founding vocalist Minoru Niihara with American singer Mike Vescera in a final bid for Western acceptance, Loudness would eventually limp back into the rising sun, never to return. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
Heavy metal Japanese style, "Hurricane Eyes" was their best effort. Earlier albums were slightly tacky, while later efforts lost the chances of Loudness becoming a household name. The album was good and it didn't sound typically Japanese, American or European. ~ John Book Loudness Hurricane Eyes Songs Hurricane Eyes Music Review Purchase Hurricane Eyes CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Steeler CD (1983)
Hurricane Eyes album
$14.65 On nearly all counts, the debut from Los Angeles heavy metal quartet Steeler is an unremarkable, even generic release; but what makes the album important is the presence of Swedish guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen, which marks his official introduction to U.S. audiences. Malmsteen's playing -- which would later gain greater notoriety in the context of Alcatrazz and his own band Rising Force -- was nothing short of a revolution in guitar circles at the time of Steeler's release. While other rock guitarists were still clamoring to figure out Eddie Van Halen's tricks, Malmsteen's shocking virtuosity -- based on classical music as much as rock -- was something for which few were prepared. The ...
| | Steelheart CD (1991)
Hurricane Eyes CD music
$6.49 Possessing metal pipes like few before him, leonine Steelheart yelper Michael Matijevic scarred the airwaves forever when he hammered the simply unmatchable chorus of the hairball "I'll Never Let You Go": ludicrous and sublime, akin to Whitney Houston hitting the hot spot in "I Will Always Love You." The opening strands of "Everybody Loves Eileen" bring Ratt out of the cellar before the cut curls into a pop n' fresh roller coaster ride. The remainders on this ridiculous dish are also overlong examples of excess but not as memorable, paying homage to Whitesnake and other flailing stylistic ventures. "I'll Never Let You Go" is available on some quality collections and no aficionado of poodle pomp should let that song go, otherwise leave Steelheart in peace with the music it helped lay to rest. ~ Doug Stone

| | Loudness Thunder In The East CD (1985)
Hurricane Eyes music CDs
$9.69 Loudness was a Japanese hard rock quartet that had numerous hit albums in the 80's and early 90's. Thunder In The East reached number 74 on the Billboard charts in 1985. Wounded Bird. 2003.
With 1985's Thunder in the East, Loudness were faced with the daunting challenge of conquering heavy metal fans outside their homeland of Japan for the first time. Knowing that their early sound might prove a tad too heavy and complex for American audiences, the foursome rose to the occasion by dispensing their most melodic compositions ever. Yet, except for a few obvious ...

| | Bright Eyes Fevers And Mirrors CD (2000)
Hurricane Eyes music CDs
$9.75 While 2002's LIFTED was the record that blew Bright Eyes and its hyper-poetic frontman, Conor Oberst, into the public's consciousness and up the Billboard charts, its predecessor, FEVERS AND MIRRORS, put him on the next-big-thing map. The third official album in the band's catalog, FEVERS AND MIRRORS finds Oberst & Co. codifying the vision nascently established on LETTING OFF THE HAPPINESS. Oberst furiously wrestles with his emotions ...

Hurricane Eyes songs
$9.85 Larry Vann has made an impressive mark on the Bay Area music scene over the years, and one listen to his latest CD, "The Rhythm and Roots of Larry Vann" (Rusty Key Records) clearly demonstrates why he has been in such huge demand for sessions and tours with the likes of Elvin Bishop and Merl Saunders. His top-notch drumming and percussion has garnered him popular and critical success throughout the United States and Europe, but Vann has also wowed critics and crowds ...
