Personnel: Maynard Ferguson (trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, valve trombone); George Kish (guitar); Vemu Mukunda, Vemu Nakunda (veena); Pete King & His Orchestra & Chorus, Peter King (alto saxophone); Danny Moss, Brian Smith (tenor saxophone); Bobby Watson (baritone saxophone); Alan Downey , John Donnelly, John Huckridge, Martin Drover (trumpet); Billy Graham , Albert Wood, Billy Graham , Chris Pyne (trombone); Pete Jackson (piano); Randy Jones (drums); Frank Ricotti (congas); Mohana Lakhimpathy (tambourine). Liner Note Author: Gene Lees. Arrangers: Adrian Drover; Keith Mansfield; Kenny Wheeler. Trumpeter Maynard Ferguson began his successful "comeback" (after several years of low-profile activity) with this well-received Columbia LP. Featuring his English orchestra (and such soloists as altoist Pete King and Danny Moss on tenor), Ferguson had a minor hit in "MacArthur Park," showcases some Indian musicians on "Chala Nata," and shows throughout that his mind was open toward both newer forms of jazz and pop music. It's an interesting if unessential set. ~ Scott Yanow Maynard Ferguson M.F. Horn Songs M.F. Horn Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Worth the wait It has been a long wait for this album to be re-released on CD. But the wait has been well worth it! It is always a joy to hear Maynard Ferguson's stratospheric trumpet as well as the superbone. The band, as always, is in top form. Submitted by latonyco (Banning, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
high energy Typical Maynard from this period. High energy and off the top of the register. Solid keyboards and sax play from the others. Not easy to dance to, but I'll give it a 90. Submitted by vandenberg (Green Bay, WI) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Best trumpeter and big band ever! I got here to check into replacing my old MF vinyl with CD's. Just saw Maynard with new band. At 77 he's still more than impressive. For the short times he plays he can match his three incredible lead trumpeters note for note.
This album started it all. Before jazz and rock would talk to each other, before fusion was thought of, this superb band and arrangements and M's soaring solo's got it all together and inspired a generation of young brass players, and as Maynard put it, made him the-really-big-bucks. this breakthrough album went beyond the one with all-the-same sounding, one dynamic level, versions of rock songs that I believe preceded it. Lush dense voicings with (I think) 5 trp, 4 trb, 5 saxes. This is the most incredible trumpeter of the last century, at his peak, with an incredible band from England. Past just showing off range for its own sake, with only effortless expressive melodic lines that just happen to be played in the stratosphere, with more power and sound than any trumpeter before or after (Doc Severinson may be his match, but he never recorded anything like this). Hearing this band in New Haven live in '73 playing Give It One, Ballad for Max, and the epic MacArthur Park (all from MF horn and MF Horn 2) was a top concert experience of my life.
Get MF Horn 2 after this, and Screaming Blues with incredible arrangement of Night Train. Submitted by John (Westford MA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
