Soundtrack English; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re Synthesizer creator Robert Moog may not be a name that instantly trips off the tongue when discussing people who have made invaluable contributions to the world of music, but this documentary aims to rectify that with a look at his work and influence. The 1960s and '70s saw Moog's keyboards entering the public consciousness as his range of instruments were adopted by musicians from a variety of genres. Initially they sparked a craze for novelty cover versions, with whole albums conducted via the warm squelching gurgles and bleeps of the Moog synthesizer. But serious musicians soon picked up on the possibilities offered by Moog's versatile array of keyboards, and prog rock bands such as Yes were soon adding them to their arsenal. What separated the various Moog keyboards from other, similar technologies was the analogue circuitry and banks of envelope filters, LFO's, and oscillators that could be manipulated to make the instrument sound different every time it was used. This lead to musicians forming a unique bond with their instrument, as they were able to interact and manipulate Moog's creations in ways that other keyboards didn't allow. As the decades passed, the Moog proved to have an incredibly long shelf-life, and became a vital instrument in the evolution musical styles as diverse as funk, techno, and even indie-rock. This film by Hans Fjellestad charters the history of the Moog, talking to the creator himself, as well as a number of musicians who have used the instruments he created; among them are Keith Emerson, Stereolab, Money Mark, Rick Wakeman, Bootsy Collins, and many others. Moog film
$9.35 One of the Canterbury scene's most revered bands, Hatfield and the North made up for the brevity of their career with some fascinating music. Always adventurous, the quartet had the keen sense to realize that only the most hardened jazz fans respond to numerous key changes and exceedingly complex time signatures, and thus enlivened their live set with the odd gnome smashing, suggestive lyrics, and jokey song titles. It worked a charm, with the band quickly amassing a large, loyal following at home in Britain and across the continent. On their eponymous debut, Hatfield stunningly succeeded in translating both their sense of fun and their musical brilliance onto disc. After a bit of light humor, the band slide into "Going Up to People and Tinkling", which glides gloriously across the keys and rhythm shifts. Both "Calyx" and "Aigrette" experiment with vocals as an instrument, while the exuberant "Rifferama" is a master class on the use of riffs. However, it's the expansive "Son of `There's No Place like Homerton'" that is this side of the album's centerpiece, a propulsive, keyboard driven piece that still awaits a modern dance troop's attention.
Personnel: Robert Wyatt (vocals, drums); Ann Rosenthal, Amanda Parsons, Richard Sinclair, Barbara Gaskin (vocals); Phil Miller (guitar); Geoff Leigh (flute, saxophone, wind); Dave Stewart (piano, organ, keyboards); Pip Pyle (drums); Jeremy Baines (wind).

| | Jabberwocky DVD (1977) Widescreen; Subtitled; DTS Sound
Moog review
$13.55 Opening with a quote from Lewis Carroll's classic nonsensical poem, Terry Gilliam's JABBERWOCKY is a darkly comic medieval masterpiece about a monster wreaking havoc on helpless villages. Michael Palin stars as Dennis Cooper, a happy-go-lucky ne'er-do-well stock taker who becomes the unlikely hero in a castle's efforts to defeat the great green beast. The unwitting and pathetic Dennis is in love with Griselda, the farthest thing from a classic princess heroine that film has ever seen. However, she wants nothing to do with Dennis, who is renounced by his father on his deathbed, setting him off on a hysterical adventure that winds up with him facing off against the monster itself. The jousting scenes are particularly funny--and very gruesome, lending the film its seriocomic tone that had the audience somewhat baffled at first, although it's now much loved. The film is a brilliant parody of medieval epics, featuring lavish costumes, a medieval score, and terrific sets. Monty Python regulars Terry Jones and Neil Innes make cameo appearances, as does director Gilliam himself.
Gadzooks! These be terrible times in the kingdom Bruno the Questionable! At the darkest hour of the Dark Ages (hey, who turned off the lights?), the dreaded Jabberwock roams the land. His eyes aflame, his talons bared, a bone-crushing horror! Which brave knight shall slay the beast and save the kingdom? Who shall win the hand of the fair princess? Could it be Dennis the Apprentice (Michael Palin), a mere dolt and silly fool who carries a potato and loves the fat Griselda? Shall he save the kingdom? Or will he be smitten with chamberpots and made to eat rats on a stick? Arrrgh! Director: Terry Gilliam
| | Low Lifetime Of Temporary Relief (10 Years Of B-Sides And Rarities) CDs (2004)
Moog DVD
$42.59 This release includes a 32-page booklet and a bonus DVD featuring music videos, live footage, and a series of documentaries by Marc Gartman.
While many artists release B-sides and rarities that are often little more than curiosities, the Duluth, Minnesota band Low consistently issued excellent non-album tracks on various singles and compilations during the course of its first 10 years together (1993-2003). For an indie group with such a seemingly limited palette--male/female vocals, guitar, bass, and spare percussion--the trio is surprisingly dynamic, with songs ranging from trademark slow, minimal pieces to gentle folk tunes to, yes, even punked-out rock numbers.
Of the 50-plus tracks featured here, more than a dozen are covers, ranging from a reverb-laden take on Wire's "Heartbeat" to an intentionally bad rendition of Journey's "Open Arms," with tunes by the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, the Smiths, Spacemen 3, and others scattered throughout the collection. Both the quality and wealth of material here is staggering--not only is this three-CD/one-DVD set essential for any Low fan, but it's sure to convert those curious about this beloved ...
| | King Crimson In The Court Of The Crimson King: Original Master Edition CD (1969) (Import)
Moog movie DVD
$14.59 Initial pressings featured a limited edition, cardboard-stock gatefold sleeve and unpublished archive photos.
KC's debut album introduced to the world a group that threw various '60s genres into a blender and set the results afire with a blowtorch. One of the pioneers of the progressive rock movement that began in the late '60s and flourished in the early '70s, King Crimson was arguably the most consistently creative band in the genre. On IN THE COURT they blend wispy, Donovan-ish folk-rock with Wagnerian grandeur, mind-bending heavy rock, and even a free- jazz sensibility. Greg Lake's vocals are effectively theatrical but more restrained than in his later ELP work. Robert Fripp was just learning how to make mincemeat of a chord progression, but he's alternately lyrical and frenetic as the moment requires.
The extended jams on cuts like "Moonchild" are light-footed and inventive, never ponderous, thanks largely to the crisp, jazzy drumming of Michael Giles. "20th Century Schizoid Man"'s bone-crushing ensemble riffs and crazed solos were of a heft unprecedented in rock & roll. Most importantly, the trademark Crimson would stick to throughout their career is shown here--dynamic variations between soft/lyrical and raucous/experimental. This was seen not just between songs but in the drastic dynamic shifts between sections in a single composition.
Digitally remastered edition of the debut album and best known classics of progressive rock from the King Crimson canon. The band included Greg Lake, Ian McDonald, Michael Giles, Pete Sinfield and founder Robert Fripp and the set list includes the FM staples "21st Century Schizoid Man" and "In The Court Of The Crimson King".

| | Jimi Hendrix - Live At Woodstock DVDs (1969) Special Edition; DTS Sound
Moog video
$10.55 Nine o'clock on Monday morning, August 18, 1969: while the work force was starting the day, Jimi Hendrix was taking the stage at Woodstock. While hundreds of thousands had already left, 25,000 people remained to see this incredible performance. Hendrix, along with drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Billy Cox, offered masterly renditions of the songs of the recently disbanded Experience ("Hey Joe," "Foxey Lady"), and gave a preview of the blues-based Band of Gypsys ("Izabella," "Hear My Train A Comin'"), as well as Jimi's era-defining rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner." Though the weekend had witnessed some landmark performances by other great artists, this performance from Hendrix is regarded by many as the defining moment in a festival ripe with defining moments.
This special 2-dvd set features the legendary Hendrix Woodstock festival material in a way never before presented. Disc one features never-before-seen footage of "Message to Love," "Spanish Castle Magic," "Foxey Lady," "Love Man" and "Hey Joe," remixed in 5.1 Surround. Also includes a new documentary "Road to Woodstock". Disc 2 features a never-before-seen black & white video recording with alternate camera angles ...
| | Steve Winwood About Time CDs (2003) Bonus Tracks; Reissue; Remastered; DualDisc
Moog film
$15.15 ABOUT TIME was issued briefly with a limited edition bonus disc featuring live and previously unreleased tracks.
This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
Rock star pedigrees don't get much more esteemed than that of former Spencer Davis Group/Traffic/Blind Faith singer/keyboardist Steve Winwood. Though Winwood gained enough fans with his massive '80s solo pop hits to garner a huge audience with little (if any) knowledge of his past, the long-time faithful will feel a kinship with the pared-down, newly energized feel of ABOUT TIME. For his first album released under his own imprint, Winwood keeps things direct and simple.
Though Winwood's previous solo album, 1997's JUNCTION SEVEN, was a much slicker affair, the roots of ABOUT TIME lay in the presence of the earlier album's guitarist Jose Neto and percussionist Walfredo Reyes, and particularly the JUNCTION SEVEN track "Got To Get Back To My Baby," which foreshadowed ABOUT TIME's Latin-influenced, heavily percussive direction. While Reyes's percolating beats breathe fresh life into Winwood's sound, one of the most important developments is that the keyboard wizard is tearing it up on the organ once again, just like back in the glory days of Traffic et al. The resultant stylistic paradigm comes off something like a modernized version of Santana with a considerably higher soul quotient, full of instrumental torque and affecting lyricism in equal measure.
Reissued; Dual Disc CD/DVD
Personnel includes: Steve Winwood (vocals, piano); Jose Neto (guitar); Walfredo Reyes Jr. (drums).
