Number Ones is a fun sampling of 18 chart-toppers by Louis Jordan & His Tympany 5 recorded for Decca between 1942 and 1950. These songs dominated the Billboard R&B charts (or jukebox race charts as they were known then) between 1942 and 1950. Number Ones includes the original versions of such early R&B tracks as "Caldonia," "Beans and Corn Bread," "Saturday Night Fish Fry," "Buzz Me," "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens," and "Jack, You're Dead!" Granted, this was the prime era of Louis Jordan's jump blues hitmaking, but it isn't a good place to start for those unfamiliar with his joyous work. Unfortunately, timeless favorites like "Five Guys Named Moe," "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby?," and "Let the Good Times Roll" have been excluded. The single-disc 1977 MCA compilation The Best of Louis Jordan still contains the best and most well-rounded selections. ~ Al Campbell
A hugely popular performer in the 1940s, vocalist/saxophonist Louis Jordan won over World War II-era audiences with his swinging jump-blues style, which proved to be a direct link between '30s jazz and '50s rock & roll. True to its title, #1S includes the 18 songs that Jordan took to Number One on the Billboard R&B charts during his stint with Decca Records.
This chronologically ordered collection begins with 1942's silly and appropriately swaying "What's the Use of Getting Sober (When You Gonna Get Drunk Again)." Also featured are Jordan hits that crossed over into the pop charts, including his rollicking take on Johnny Mercer's "G.I. Jive" (Number One on both pop and R&B charts) and the proto-rock tune "Caldonia," which hinted at what was to come in the following decade from Little Richard and Chuck Berry. Throughout the compilation, Jordan's fun-loving persona is at the fore, with his smooth, deft vocals and always-grooving sax lines revealing the reasons behind his remarkably wide appeal. (Leave it to Jordan to have a hit with "Stone Cold Dead in the Market," a bizarrely catchy tale of murder that also featured Ella Fitzgerald on vocals.) For an excellent introduction to Jordan's peak years, #1S can't be beat.

5 stars Memory Lane
Listening to this album was just like being back in LA in 1946, listening to my Mom and Dad's 78 record player...except with better quality sound. I loved every cut. Mike Malone

You can talk of Elvis or Bill Haley all you want but this cat, Louis Jordan, is the True King of Rock and Roll and "1S" is packed with the proof to back my claim! Marketing folk of his day didn't know what to call his rocking, high percussion laiden sound so they just lumped him into the swing catagory because of the brass involved and looked away. Check out his movie from 1938 and be impressed. This's just my opinion but Jordan influenced the likes of Little Richard, Led Zeppelin, and yes, even Elvis!

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang CD  (2002)

It is hard to resist the extravagant charms in the stage adaptation of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG (which is based on the MGM/United Artists movie of the same name), which is billed as "the most fantasmagorical stage musical in the history of everything!" The music and lyrics of Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman complement Jeremy Sams's stage script perfectly by creating the aural equivalent of the story's magic (the ultimate protagonist is, of course, a flying car). A 34-piece orchestra, directed by Robert Scott, backs the original London cast (led by Michael Ball and Emma Williams) on this fine recording that works alone and as a souvenir of one's visit to the theater.
Film producer Albert R. "Cubby" Broccoli, who bought the film rights to Ian Fleming's James Bond novels, also picked up Fleming's children's book, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, a fantasy about a family and a flying car, and in the 1960s he hired children's author Roald Dahl to co-adapt it into a screenplay and stole away songwriting brothers Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman from Walt Disney to write the score. The Shermans' most successful film had been Mary Poppins, which co-starred Dick Van Dyke, and Broccoli cast Van Dyke as the father, bringing the whole project to United Artists, the same studio that handled the Bond films. The resulting two-and-a-half-hour children's movie musical appeared for the 1968 Christmas season, at which time it was greeted with lukewarm reviews and a modest box office success, while the soundtrack album reached the Top 100 and stayed in the charts for six months. That might have been that, except for the emergence of home video, which gave the film a new life among later generations of undiscerning children. Thirty-four years later, the film served as the ...
