Since his early days with Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter has continually pushed the envelope. On this live quartet outing, Shorter continues on his quest for musical innovation: All eight tracks on BEYOND THE SOUND BARRIER are exciting, spontaneous, and lively. Further, the taut ensemble plays well off of each other as they ebb and flow, build, climax, and dissipate. This album contains no jazz standards or common song forms. It also avoids round-robin improvisations. In fact, there are really no individual solos heard here. On each tune, the group plays off of each other in a kind of "group solo." Also, most of this music is rubato or without tempo. Highlights include Shorter's abstract reworking of Felix Mendelssohn's "On Wings of Song," which juxtaposes a beautiful melody over a dissonant, chatty rhythm section. "Over Shadow Hill Way" slowly moves from a soft ballad to an explosion. This song is marked by bashing drums, ominous piano musings, and cascading soprano sax riffs. Additionally, the title track, "Beyond the Sound Barrier" features angular piano rhythms, wild cymbal play, and throbbing bass patterns. Overall, the daring playing on BEYOND THE SOUND BARRIER proves that jazz is still alive and kicking.
Personnel: Wayne Shorter (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Danilo Perez (piano); John Patitucci (bass instrument); Brian Blade (drums).
Entertainment Weekly (No. 833, p.77) - "...[A] brilliantly improvised stew." - Grade: A JazzTimes (p.108) - "[T]his album sprinkles in several new tunes. They tend toward a mysterious rippling quality that justifies long and cosmic titles. The best of the bunch is the title track, which spins a seductive ostinato into a vast and mysterious koan." Mojo (Publisher) (p.110) - 4 stars out of 5 - "The interaction between Shorter and his dynamic younger cohorts delivers some high-voltage exploratory workouts." Beyond The Sound Barrier Music Wayne Shorter Beyond The Sound Barrier Songs Beyond The Sound Barrier Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Totally ignore the last review I do not know what the last person was looking for but if you like Jazz this is the ultimate CD. Wayne is now back to where he was in the 60"s at the top of his game. This CD along with Footprints Live are two of the best live Jazz CD's ever made. This is a MUST own for any real jazz fan. This will be in most Top Ten lists for the year. Submitted by raymondehayes (Minneapolis MN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
mind-blowing why only four stars? well, i'd choose four and a half, or four and three-quarters if i could... the only thing that holds me back is the way some tracks just fade in or out. it's an incomplete feeling. and some documentation of *where* these tracks came from would've been nice...
BUT, when the music's on, it's on with a vengeance. this is simply the best quartet interplay you're likely to hear this year, if not the next decade. i just saw this group play this past weekend, and it was one of those shows that you can't even talk about afterwards because you have nothing in your vocabulary to explain what you just witnessed. and i thought i knew what i was in for since i'm already familiar with "footprints: live" and listen to quite a bit of free improv...
good god, this is telepathy, plain and simple. listen to "over shadow hill way" and try to remain convinced that it doesn't exist.
like other reviews here and elsewhere have pointed out, this isn't light listening. but pay attention and allow yourself to be drawn in and you'll never listen to music in quite the same way. don't expect typical solos over standard piano comps and rhythm riffs. this is four virtuosos listening to each other and knowing how to dance outside the lines, yet still keeping the piece cohesive.
stop reading... really... and go buy it now. Submitted by monkeythepig (camp swampy) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Still best of the best This new album by Wayne Shorter shows that he and this group is currently the most innovative and searching group in jazz today. The music grabs you and takes you on a journey of whirlwind proportions. Shorter's mastery of his instrument is matched by no one. His recent CDs have renewed my faith in jazz.

Playing with the critics Wayne Shorter is one of my all-time favorites and I looked forward to this release with great expectations as it was reported to present selections from concerts over 2-3 years. This led me to expect great stuff, highlights. I can't believe these are the highlights. Only explanation I have for this luckluster collection is that Wayne Shorter is testing the critics, checking if he gets 5-stars no matter what he puts on these days. You can safely pass this by.
