Witchcraft (Hard Rock): Magnus Pelander (vocals, guitar); John Hoyles (guitar); Ola Henriksson (bass guitar); Jonas Arnesen (drums). Personnel: Magnus Pelander (vocals, guitar). Recording information: New Rising Studios (03/08/2005-03/22/2005). Photographer: Anna Ledin. Ask a group of doom metal or stoner rock enthusiasts what band was the blueprint for the doom/stoner field, and the vast majority will -- without hesitation -- say Black Sabbath. So when a band is as Sabbath-influenced as Witchcraft, it is understandable that some headbangers would describe them as a doom band. But Witchcraft isn't nearly as forceful or as heavy as Eyehategod, Orange Goblin, or Toadliquor, and Firewood isn't typical of what has been considered doom metal and stoner rock in the '90s and 2000 -- actually, this 2005 release shows no awareness of post-'80s metal or even post-'70s metal. Rather, Firewood is a total throwback to the heavy metal, hard rock, and psychedelic rock of the late '60s and very early '70s. Black Sabbath's first few albums with Ozzy Osbourne are a strong influence, and the Swedish band's other inspirations include Jethro Tull, Cream, Uriah Heep, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and the great but underexposed Budgie. If one didn't know for sure that Firewood was a 2005 recording, it would be easy to assume that the disc was recorded around 1969 or 1970 -- even the production is totally retro. And while Witchcraft's melodic offerings aren't the least bit groundbreaking, they are enjoyable; this derivative outing won't win any awards for originality, although it leaves no doubt that these Swedes are good at what they do. Firewood isn't in a class with the best albums that Sabbath, Tull, and Hendrix had to offer back in the Richard Nixon years, but it's a decent, worthwhile example of Witchcraft's desire to re-create the early years of heavy metal and hard rock. ~ Alex HendersonMojo (Publisher) (p.103) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Witchcraft play it retro with more than enough of their own spirit and soul to keep things interesting." Witchcraft Firewood Songs Firewood Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) new, but sounds early 70s The Pentagram comparisons have already been drawn apparently but I hasten to add that Witchcraft sounds like EARLY Pentagram (early-mid 70s) and not the profoundly cool doom metal band into which they metamorphosed from 1985 to present day. Witchcraft, on the other hand, sounds like a bit of the Doors, very early Sabbath, Blue Cheer, early BOC, early Captain Beyond, and yes, the aforementioned Pentagram rolled into one tightly squeezed hemp nugget. Organic and blissfully oblivious to anything related to modern times, Witchcraft is a retro-revivalist's dream machine as this band appears intent on unearthing the entire early 70s era and smoking up a recently exhumed Jerry Garcia during the main attraction of the Macy's Day Parade. The vocals are a bit on the bland, average side of things but they basically add nothing and neither do they detract from the "goings on". Likeable in a screwed up hippy-fried grease pit sort of a way, "Firewood" is the kind of album where you are compelled to light the incense, part the beads, and lick the wild oak. Return to Metal Kicks!!!! If you think Black Sabbath did it right these guys are right up your ally. Very retro. Heavy and dark. Strong vocals with ripping guitars. I like the fact that the drummer actually drums. Submitted by Jake (Edwardsville) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Firewood
$10.25 This remastered edition of UFO's 1975 album FORCE IT contains "Let It Roll," "Mother Mary," Shoot Shoot," and more. If UFO has one addition to rock's pantheon of classic albums, this is it. FORCE IT builds on its predecessor, PHENOMENON, by taking the band further away from their fuzzier, space-rocking early records. Guitarist Michael Schenker's playing has a new toughness and clarity that perfectly frames the more melodic, hook-oriented songwriting he developed in tandem with singer Phil Mogg. With crisp rhythms and riffs that gallop squarely on the beat, FORCE IT provides ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Firewood
$6.39 The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion). Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows. Bill moseyed up over to Andrea, put his arm around her, and when she was looking away, sized her up -- at precisely the same moment Chuck Berry was checking her out. If that doesn't mean ...
| | Starz Violation CD (1977) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Firewood
$10.45 Starz: Peter Sweval (bass guitar); Michael Lee Smith, Richie Ranno, Joe X. Dube, Brendan Harkin. Personnel: Michael Lee Smith (vocals); Richie Ranno, Brendan Harkin (guitar); Joe X. Dube (drums). Liner Note Authors: Jeff Rougvie; Pat Egan. Recording information: A&R Studios, New York, NY; Record Plant Recording Studios, New York, NY. Starz' sophomore album, Violation, was quite similar to its predecessor. Jack Douglas was still the band's producer, and Starz continued to favor the type of slick, commercial hard rock that would be called pop-metal in the '80s and early '90s. This 1977 LP didn't establish Starz as major ...
| | Sword Age Of Winters CD (2006)
Firewood
$9.49 Coming to grips with the Sword's unlikely genesis in the alternative music Mecca of Austin, TX, leads one to wonder whether heavy metal has finally become hip again. Depending on your generation, nothing will seem as simultaneously preposterous (Gen-X'ers who came of age during pop-metal's heyday and don't recognize it as an unrepresentative anomaly) or obvious (everyone else) when discussing a genre that's spent the bulk of its 35-year history on the absolute fringe of rock culture. If that isn't "alternative," well, what is? In any ...
| | Witchcraft CD (2004) Reissue
Firewood
$12.69 Unlike most doom bands, Sweden's Witchcraft aren't content to remake Black Sabbath's original heavy metal blueprint -- doleful, deliberate, scary stuff -- at ear-shattering volume and distortion. Rather, they take it a step further by ensuring their eponymous 2004 debut (which they proudly claim was recorded "in a basement" using only vintage equipment) ...
