For many music fans the words "super group" will elicit groans and expectations of too much hype, too much in-fighting, and too many noodly guitar jams. In the case of Dark New Day, however, the participants' previous experience has been a boon rather than a drawback. Featuring ex-members of Creed, Sevendust, Stereomud, and Tommy Lee's band, the group covers a broad spectrum of heavy styles, making TWELVE YEAR SILENCE one of the most diverse hard-rock albums since the heyday of Stone Temple Pilots. "Pieces" combines monstrous early-Metallica-worthy thrash riffs with syncopated sections more in line with rap-metal. On "Brother," vocalist Brett Hestla channels his inner Lenny Kravitz with satisfyingly soulful results. The acoustic- based "Follow the Sun Down" brings it all together, combining power ballads of both the Zeppelin "Going to California" and Extreme "More Than Words" variety with funky rhythm section work and vocals that are equal parts Robert Plant and Jeff Buckley. A unusual case in which too many chefs actually made the soup better, Dark New Day does right by the legacy of its members' former bands.

A Unexpected Strong Debut I heard their first hit "Brother" on the radio and knew this band was well on it's way for success. A few months later I picked this album up, and not knowing what to expect this album thrived. Good debut album from a band that I had not know would be well, even though I knew that this band had alot of experience previously. Pointing out, even if the whole album is good, "Pieces", "Taking Me Alive", "Free", and my favorite "Lean" are all good songs. Submitted by Bloodar (From The States) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great stuff Yes!! It's about friggin time. A new Hard rock group that actually has talent in all areas of music. These guys can play their instruments, and yes the guy can sing. It's not none of that boring monotone crap like Trapt, 12 stones etc...No disrespect to those bands(They do have a few good tunes). Highlights include "Thats Enough", Which has a really catchy, and heartfelt chorus, And my fav. "Evergreen". Dude. Evergreen has THEE coolest intro guitar riff, being a guitar junkie and player. The chorus kicks major a$$ too. Buy this B!TCH!!! Submitted by Tony (North Dakota) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Never Mind The Bolsheviks: The Best Of The Space Cossacks CD (2005)
Twelve Year Silence songs
$12.95 Since this Washington, D.C.-based surf collective only released two albums in its relatively brief existence (from 1996-2000), a best-of collection would seem to be unnecessary. But both of those discs were out of print, at least on CD, as of this compilation's appearance in 2005, so Never Mind the Bolsheviks is now the Space Cossacks' only legacy. And it serves them well. The 24 tracks squeezed into 70 minutes cherry-pick the best from their minimal catalog and add a pair of live tunes as well as some rare singles and unreleased nuggets for the collectors. While there was nothing particularly unique about the Cossacks' retro Dick Dale/Ventures approach, the instrumental quartet is a better than average contemporary surf combo with a deep understanding of its genre. But, thankfully, that didn't prevent the band from writing originals that can proudly stand next to the few classics they ...
