Any concerns about the members of Finch playing it safe on their second album SAY HELLO TO SUNSHINE are squashed quickly. The easy route would have been to bang out a near-exact replica of the emo-with-a-pop-edge approach of their 2002 debut WHAT IT IS TO BURN. Instead, the Golden State quintet started messing with denser and more challenging riffs and odd time changes. As a result, Finch's pop-punk tendencies are tamped down in favor of stop-and-start cadences like those that dot the jittery "Ink," along with the atypical swinging touch applied by new drummer Marc Allen. Guitarists Randy Strohmeyer and Alex Linares are more than up to these radical, stylistic shifts, bobbing and weaving from cleanly plucked chords to choppier, more distorted lines within the span of a few bars, as on the challenging "Miro." Thankfully, Finch's aggressive tendencies continue to be at the front and center of their sound, as one listen to the volcanic opener "Insomniatic Meat" confirms. With such intriguing stylistic shifts permeating it, SAY HELLO TO SUNSHINE is an outing whose rewards come via repeated listening. Musically, it is better than any modern rock band. It includes songs changing between major and minor keys. There are also uses diminished chords. The time signatures include 4/4, 5/4, 9/8, 3/4, 7/8, and 6/8. It is amazing! Some songs there are changes in time signatures. Their lyrics are poetic and emotional. Buy this album!

sweet Good album... more prog and harder than the first, but great! Submitted by sven (Portsmouth, NH) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Badass... I honestly believe this is there best work ever, its more progressive in other ways then meet the eye, such as a new way to express goth and psychedelics... especially "Micro", and "A man Alone", its pretty rediculous, though the scream is there base so ill let that slide... good album, just have to pay close attention. brilliant essential album for anyone into heavy rock or punk. Tons of melody and well written songs, with one or two duds but hey.
"they should scream a lot more though"
No way. Screaming is tired now. It's boring and predictable.
Singers should SING more, and I'm glad finch have that down.
This is one of those albums you always come back to, it doesn't tire quickly. Submitted by Jordan (Christchurch, New Zealand) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Richard Thompson Amnesia CD (1988)
Say Hello To Sunshine
$10.49 Amnesia was Richard Thompson's second album with producer and keyboard player Mitchell Froom, and the two sounded a lot more comfortable with each other than they did on their previous project together, Daring Adventures. This being a Richard Thompson album, the high quality of the songs and the guitar playing is a given; while Daring Adventures had a few cuts that sounded like padding, Richard comes up aces this time out, and even sounds a bit more upbeat than usual, letting his political side rise to the surface on "Jerusalem on the Jukebox" and "Yankee, Go Home" and rocking out on "Don't Tempt Me" and "Gypsy Love Songs." (Be advised that the gloriously sad "I Still Dream" and "Waltzing's for Dreamers" are on hand to remind us this is a Richard Thompson album.) Froom's production makes more of a difference this time out; Amnesia sounds brighter and cleaner ...

| | Joe Meek EP Collection CDs (2007) Box Set; Extended Play
Say Hello To Sunshine
$52.19 Maverick British producer Joe Meek is famous for his gonzo approach to sonic innovation. His unique approach to recording technology and instrumentation, coupled with his maniacal ambition and left-field artistic vision, made for some of the most striking pop records of 1960s England. Over the course of 12 discs, this massive box set takes a journey through the EPs masterminded by Meek between 1960 and '63. As THE EP COLLECTION bears out, if British teens in the immediate pre-Beatles era wanted something that sounded markedly different from their parents' music, Joe Meek's music factory was the place to find it. From the Shadows-on-a-bender instrumental sounds of the twangy Tornados and the crazed garage-rock rave-ups of the Flee-Rekkers to the Bizarro Universe pop gestures of John Leyton and John Charles, this is early-'60s pop/rock through a deliciously warped funhouse mirror. The painstakingly crafted package that reproduces the original sleeves of each individual EP is worth the price of admission in itself. The EP was a much more popular format in the U.K. in the early 1960s than it would be at any subsequent time, so naturally many of Joe Meek's productions got issued on extended-play discs. This box set doesn't come close to containing all of the EPs with Joe Meek-produced tracks; there were way too many for that. But this 12-CD set does have a dozen EPs of Meek-overseen material issued between 1960 and 1963, each replicated as a four-track CD in sleeves that exactly duplicate the original artwork and liner notes. These include a couple EPs each by Meek's most popular acts of the time (the Tornados and John Leyton); an EP each by artists whose chart success was occasional-to-nonexistent (Mike Berry, Heinz, Houston Wells, Don Charles, the Packabeats, the Flee-Rekkers); and a couple EPs credited to the Blue Men (the second of which was actually canceled before issue) that were taken from Meek's concept album about life in outer space, I Hear a New World. Because most, and possibly all, of the 48 tracks have been issued on CD on one of the many other reissues of Meek's productions, this box is really an indulgence for specialist collectors who crave that original artwork in some form. Many conventional listeners will certainly find it inconvenient to keep getting up and down after each four-track disc has played in order to hear the box in its entirety, though the four-dozen ...
