How Love Should Be
$6.31 The Tracks of Tyler Hilton is the kind of major-label pop debut that's not heard much in 2004 -- an album that has its eye on middle-American middle of the road, appealing equally to pre-teens and housewives without condescending to either. Hilton isn't a teen-pop idol, nor is he a crooner. He's an unabashed mainstream pop singer/songwriter, blessed with good looks, a lightly husky and appealing voice, a good ear and a knack for pleasing MOR mature pop. It's a sound that would have had found a greater audience in the first Bush administration rather than the second, but that doesn't mean that it sounds dated -- it just means that there are few venues for this kind of well-crafted, highly-polished ear candy in 2004 than there was in 1990, when Richard Marx was a star and Curtis Stigers was an up-n-comer. Hilton is in their league -- a good songwriter, a good singer, creating music that's unapologetically designed for the Top 40. Unfortunately, that Top 40 doesn't quite exist anymore, but those that long for a time when pop music wasn't hip or hip-hop, this will satisfy them quite nicely. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Personnel: Tyler Hilton (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, percussion); Tim Pierce (guitar); Geza X, Rick Parker (electric guitar); Paul Fox (organ); Paul Roessler, Brian Lapin (keyboards); Davey Faragher, Douglas Lunn ...
| | Nile Those Whom The Gods Detest CD (2009)
How Love Should Be
$12.78 It's hard to not be impressed by the sheer sonic onslaught that is otherwise known as Nile. Except to the most hardened death metal fanatic, the genre has a way of sounding the same after a while, but Nile is one of the few exceptions -- able to put their own unmistakable fingerprints on this heavy duty style (Egyptian-influenced lyrics and musical bits, highly impressive instrumental dexterity, etc.). And on their sixth studio effort overall, 2009's Those Whom the Gods Detest, Nile has once again proven that they are a step ahead of the rest of the pack. Although some of the sonic depth has to be attributed to producer Neil Kernon (after all, he worked with such sticklers for audio perfection as Queensr˙che in the past), it's the true metallic fury that Nile create themselves that makes it all extremely impressive. Case in point, such delicious death metal ditties as "Kafir!," while on selections such as the title track and what's sure to be top metal song title of 2009, "Yezd Desert Ghul Ritual in the Abandoned Towers of Silence," Karl Sanders shows why he is considered by many to be the finest guitarist of the extreme metal genre (both songs incorporate Sanders' love of all things Middle Eastern). "Exotic" and "heavy metal" are not often terms used together, but in the case of Those Whom the Gods Detest, they go together as splendidly as peanut butter and jelly. ~ Greg Prato

How Love Should Be
$15.98 Unlike its 2002 predecessor Back in the U.S., Good Evening New York City doesn't cherrypick highlights from a tour, it commemorates a specific event: the inauguration of Citi Field -- the replacement for the now-defunct Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a legendary show in 1965 -- in the summer of 2009. The circumstances may be different -- different enough to lead to a Billy Joel cameo on "I Saw Her Standing There," the piano man returning a favor from Paul, who played at Billy's Shea-closing shows in 2008 -- and McCartney might have two strong albums of new material to draw upon, but as an album, Good Evening New York City plays a lot like Back in the U.S. with a whopping 17 of its 35 tracks shared between the two titles. More importantly, the vibe is the same, with Macca delivering an expertly balanced and sequenced set with all the skill of the old pro that he is. Apart from the inclusion of "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and "I'm Down," there are no surprises, either in song selection or performance, but no surprises doesn't mean no satisfaction, and this is plenty entertaining
