David Shankle doesn’t require any introduction in the metal scene. Everybody will remember him as the legendary guitarist of the loudest band on earth, Manowar, in which he was a member from 1988 to 1995. Now with his own band, the result is the stunning debut album "Ashes To Ashes", a work that will not only fascinate every metal fan, but will also capture the attention of every demanding musician, who will raise their eyebrows in respect. It’s not only Shankle’s incredibly fast riffs, it’s not only the grand musical epics, but the flawless presentation of the extraordinary skills.

| | Hibria Defying The Rules CD (2005)
Ashes To Ashes album
$12.95 Let's say, for the sake of argument, that a headbanger who knew a lot about metal (past and present) but was unfamiliar with Hibria was exposed to Defying the Rules during a blindfold test. Unable to identify Hibria, the headbanger was still asked to guess what year the CD was recorded -- and understandably, he or she would be likely to respond, "Probably around 1984 or 1985? Sometime in the early to mid-'80s perhaps?" Well, wrong answer, but certainly an understandable guess. Although recorded in 2004, Defying the Rules is an album that, stylistically, could have been recorded at least 20 years earlier. Hibria is part of the power metal revival movement; they recorded their first demo in 1997, but stylistically, these metalheads are a total throwback to the days when Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Queensrÿche, Helloween, and Ronnie James Dio reigned supreme. Their forceful yet consistently melodic work isn't the least bit groundbreaking, but then, a long list of artists in a variety of genres have provided ...

Ashes To Ashes album
$13.89 Brain Donor is a gloriously un-self-conscious side project from Julian Cope, who uses the power trio's occasional albums not as an escape from the Krautrock-inspired music and pagan lyrical obsessions of his post-'80s solo work, but as a different entry point into the same set of ideas. Playing bass for the first time since the early days of the Teardrop Explodes, Cope teams up with Doggen (Dogan Foster), a metal-obsessed lead guitarist, and John Bonham-inspired drummer ...

Ashes To Ashes CD music
$17.99 A prototypical heavy-metal band if ever there was one, Iron Maiden has all of the hallmarks of the genre and then some. Creepy mascot for every album cover? Check. Undeniably intense live shows featuring said larger-than-life mascot? Check. Three fret-shredding guitarists playing at once? Check.
The two-disc ESSENTIAL IRON MAIDEN takes listeners backwards (for the most part) down the shadowy path of the iconic British group's career, beginning with tracks from 2003's DANCE OF DEATH and 2000's BRAVE NEW WORLD, the album that reunited Maiden with its most beloved frontman, the mercurial Bruce Dickinson (after two records with replacement Blaze Bayley). By the end of the first disc, the compilation hits the classic mid-to-late-1980s lineup with "The Clairvoyant," one of the group's signature mini-epics. The second disc ventures further into vintage Maiden (including the majestic "Wasted Years" and the soaring "Aces High"), ending with the band's ...
| | Bela Fleck Hidden Land CD (2006) DualDisc
Ashes To Ashes music CDs
$17.15 This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
Bela Fleck's progressive fusion of jazz, bluegrass, classical, rock, and anything else he can get his hands on has been surprising listeners for some time now. 2006's THE HIDDEN LAND offers more of the same, though "sameness" for Fleck is liberated from its usual meaning. For example, the elaborate riff on Bach's "Fugue from Prelude & Fugue No. 20" that opens the disc is a stylistic whiplash that manages to incorporate bop, swing, funk, and psychedelia while still honoring the spirit of the original.
Fleck's genre-smashing banjo playing is enough to win the heart of any adventurous listener, but his Flecktones--who include bassist Victor Wooten, multi-instrumentalist Jeff Coffin, and drummer Future Man--are as flexible and risk-hungry ...

| | Saxon Eagle Has Landed III CDs (2006)
Ashes To Ashes album
$16.75 It was on the concert stage (or more precisely, their local bar's stage) that the majority of New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands caused an initial buzz in their native land. And one of the genre's most popular live acts at the time was Saxon. Thus far, the group has issued countless live sets over the years, and 2006 saw the latest entry in their ongoing The Eagle Has Landed series. Recorded during various Europe dates circa 2004 and 2005, the double-disc Eagle Has Landed, Vol. 3 contains both blasts from the past and new tracks (disc one focusing on their early days through 1984, while the majority of disc two focuses on 1991 through 2004). Saxon 2006 only sees two original bandmembers still in attendance -- singer Biff Byford and guitarist Paul Quinn -- but Saxon's signature, anthemic metal sound remains intact. With Saxon's '80s era considered by most fans to be their strongest, the first disc is expectedly the better of the two, as it includes "Never Surrender," "And the Bands Played On," "Warrior" (which sounds like Kill 'Em All-era Metallica), and "Crusader." As evidenced by the second disc, Saxon's '90s-era material was certainly an improvement over the group's overly commercial material of the mid-to-late '80s ("Lionheart," "Beyond the Grave," etc.) but wasn't exactly as fist-pumping/headbanging-inducing as, say, "Wheels of Steel." ~ Greg Prato
Saxon’s 1979 debut already hinted that a rough diamond was about to emerge. Their second recording, Wheels Of Steel, tuned into a mega seller, as Saxon went on to tour all over the world. The successor, Strong Arm Of The Law, and especially their double platinum release Denim And Leather (1981) reinforced Saxon’s reputation. Tours of America, an appearance at the Monsters Of Rock festival in Castle Donington, and the live album The Eagle Has Landed (1982) (according to Melody Maker “one of the best live recordings of the decade”) ...
