NTSC/Region 0. The Star is Steve Lacy, the soprano sax innovator, talking about his musical concepts and his major influences from Sidney Bechet to John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, Gil Evans, and Thelonious Monk who showed him the way to 'lift the bandstand'. The film presents clips of all these artists who delineates the human inspirations behind Lacy's processing of sly wit, precise abstraction, and mythical method. Lacy's pivotal position in modern jazz history has never shone more clearly than it does in this brilliant film. Eforfilms. 2005. Master Of The Soprano Sax
$8.85 Quicksilver Messenger Service: John Cipollina, Gary Duncan, Greg Elmore, David Freiberg. Without question, this follow-up to Quicksilver Messenger Service's self-titled debut release is the most accurate in portraying the band on vinyl in the same light as the group's critically and enthusiastically acclaimed live performances. The album is essentially centered around the extended reworkings of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love?" and "Mona," as well as the lesser lauded -- yet no less intense -- contribution of Gary Duncan's (guitar/vocals) "Calvary." This album is the last to feature the original quartet incarnation of QMS. The collective efforts of John Cipollina (guitar/vocals), Greg Elmore (percussion), David Freiberg (bass/vocals), and the aforementioned Duncan retain the uncanny ability to perform with a psychedelic looseness of spirit, without becoming boring or in the least bit pretentious. The side-long epic "Who Do You Love?" suite is split into an ensemble introduction and coda as well as four distinct sections for the respective bandmembers. The perpetually inventive chops of QMS are what is truly on display here. The musicians' unmitigated instrumental prowess and practically psychic interaction allow them to seamlessly weave into and back out of the main theme. Yet all the while, each player takes center stage for uncompromising solos. "Mona" ...

Master Of The Soprano Sax
$13.25 Personnel: Vijay Iyer (piano); Marcus Gilmore (drums). Audio Mixer: Scotty Hard. Liner Note Author: Vijay Iyer. Recording information: Systems Two Studios, Brooklyn, NY (11/03/2008/03/31/2009). Photographer: Dave Morgan. Arranger: Vijay Iyer. Vijay Iyer has captured the ears of critics and listeners like only a handful of the most elite jazz pianists since McCoy Tyner, Cecil Taylor, or Misha Mengelberg initially burst onto the scene. There's no other single player who sounds even remotely like him, few who can match his inventive and whimsical sense of play or seriousness, and absolutely nobody who presents the stunning, highly intelligent music he dishes out. With HISTORICTY, he touches on many different levels of acumen, influenced by contemporary alternative rock, Motown, show tunes, pop fusion, the early creative music of the '70s, and ethnic strains. Iyer also revisits two of his older compositions, with the majority of this progressive jazz -- whether "covers" or originals -- done completely in his own scintillating style. Vijay Iyer has captured the ears of critics and listeners like only a handful ...

Master Of The Soprano Sax
$16.55 NTSC/Region 0. The great Jazzman John Coltrane in nine rare, live television performances, shot in the late 1950's and the early 1960's. In dazzling extended solos, showcasing his trademark 'sheets of sound,' Coltrane demonstrates his mastery of tenor, alto, and soprano saxes and the unique artistry he brought to innovations in Jazz - and in music as a whole. This collection has both breadth and depth. Four of these performances are led by Miles Davis, who features Coltrane on the worldchanging 'So What,' as well as on Dave Brubeck's 'The Duke'; and Miles also works out his huge, orchestral ensemble under the direction of Gil Evans. The rest of the program is given over to the John Coltrane Quartet ...
