(8 Customer Reviews)
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
More than 30 years into his recording career, John Hiatt is as vital as ever on MASTER OF DISASTER, and at his most soulful since his critically feted BRING THE FAMILY/SLOW TURNING period. Not only are his singing and material full of grit and emotional impact, there's a vintage Atlantic soul flavor to some of the tunes here that conjures up images of Bob Dylan and Otis Redding trading songs in the back room of a Nashville beer joint. Even the more overtly country-oriented tracks, such as "Thunderbird" and "Old School" are full of original lyrical twists and turns typical of Hiatt's distinctively quirky sensibility. MASTER OF DISASTER closes by peeking into yet another corner of musical Americana, with the country blues-tinged "Back on the Corner;" equal parts Randy Newman and Ry Cooder, it perfectly illustrates the combo platter of tradition and sly innovation that is Hiatt's stock in trade.

John Hiatt Master Of Disaster Songs Master Of Disaster Music Review Average Rating: (3.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Crisp sound, lyrics and music Call it a day - maybe whoever said that should - then sit down, relax and have another listen. I have heard it just once and love it already. If it grows on me more even better. An absolute winner and if you are a true fan you can recall traces of earlier slower tunes - this one has humour - eg Winter Blues, fresh energy and mellow feels - best in a long time. time to call it a day First I must say I have been a JH fan right from the outset. Wild Eyed Gypsies from his first album is probably the greatest song ever written. His albums Bring The Family, Slow Turning etc.,right up to Walk On,Crossing Muddy Waters and Tiki Bar all contain superb songs, but I'm afraid after the dissapointment of
This Gruff Exterior this album is a
worse. Only one track is worth a listen. That's the title track which represents JH at almost his best.
I hope he is just going through a creative lull and will return to form next time, but to do that I fear he needs to stop working with these third rate bar bands like the goners and his current band and return to the superior musitions used on the likes of walk on. Run of the mill I think John Hiatt is one of the best singer/songwriters working today. However, "Master Of Disaster" feels and sounds like a project delivered to honour a contract. There seems to be very little of the John Hiatt brand of intelligent style about this CD. The All Stars band is way below the skill level of the "Fugitive Popes" or "Goners". Always a fan Not his best. I'll buy anything he puts out but this one falls a bit short with no real stars standing out. Mostly mellow and not nearly as entertaing as some of his other recent releases. Submitted by TONYWILLS (Lighthouse Point, FL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
