Personnel: Patti LaBelle (vocals); Elton John (vocals, piano); Mary J. Blige (vocals); Michael Thompson (guitar); Everette Harp (alto saxophone); Michael Bearden (Wurlitzer piano, keyboards, drums); Sheldon "So" Goode (keyboards, bass instrument, drums, background vocals); Clarence Allen (keyboards); Reggie Hamilton (bass instrument); Abe Laboriel, Jr. (drums); Bashiri Johnson (percussion); Kristine W, Kenya Ivey, Ulissa Ivey (background vocals). The second straight Patti LaBelle studio album to be titled like a compilation, Classic Moments -- following 2004's Timeless Journey -- is an all-covers affair with a few pleasant surprises. While it won't shock fans to hear LaBelle in great form, some of the material the singer takes on couldn't have been all that expected. Soul classics like "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)" (hindered by a rather plain arrangement) and "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" (sounding entirely modern, even with the disco zaps and galactic keyboard effects) are natural picks, but a few other songs make this more than an average covers album, which are often spat out like contractual obligations. Highlights include strong takes on Michael McDonald's "I Keep Forgetting," the Pretenders' "I'll Stand By You" (turned into a spare piano ballad) and the Jones Girls' "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else." The set's not spotless, but it's more than a stopgap release and will please LaBelle's followers. ~ Andy Kellman Patti LaBelle is one of R&B's classic artists, so it makes sense that she would record an album of accordingly classic tunes. CLASSIC MOMENTS opens with a tribute to Aretha Franklin entitled "Ain't No Way." Teamed up with fellow crooner Mary J. Blige, this bluesy ballad recalls not only the style of Franklin, but also of Ray Charles and even Dinah Washington. The sorrowful ballad "I Can't Make You Love Me," made popular by Bonnie Raitt, highlights LaBelle's ability to interpret heartrending lyrics with both drama and subtlety. She shows even greater range on the Pretenders' power ballad "Stand By You." Here LaBelle infuses the lyric with a down-home R&B flavor. As good as these tracks are, Elton John's "Your Song" is the album's sparkling gem. Taken far out of its mainstream pop context, "Your Song" features a slick backbeat and a wailing, blues- inflected vocal on which the R&B diva really shows off her ability to ad lib around a melody. Overall, CLASSIC MOMENTS sees LaBelle still in top form. Her excellent choices in song selection are equally matched by the searing quality of her performances. Do yo thing Patti Patti Labelle in my young days, was not even close to being nor becoming my favorite singer.
As I have grown older, I can appreciate her style of music, and the wonderful vocals she bring to the table. You just do not find that in many artist today.

Album falls short of expectations I have been a Patti LaBelle fan since 1975. Patti was right back on track with her last album, Timeless Journey, but she slips a little with Classic Moments. The choice of songs is good, but Patti unfortunately (as she sometimes has a tendency to do) over-sings on most of them. The best tracks are “Ain’t No Way” (Mary J.’s vocals are okay, but a better singer for Patti to duet with could have been chosen), “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore,” “I Write a Song” (up until the end when Patti starts screaming the lyrics), “Silly”, and “Land of the Living” (although I would like to hear a remixed version with a stronger beat). “Your Song” with Elton John comes off as a smarmy love fest between the two. On too many of the songs her vocals start out beautifully, but end up going too far into, and, basically, screeching out eardrum-splitting notes. I usually love Patti’s interpretations of other artists’ songs, but on this album, in general, I feel the original versions are much better, notably, The Jones Girls “You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else”, “Stand By You”, “Didn’t I Blow Your Mind This Time.” Nobody should ever bother with “He’s Out Of My Life.” It was a sappy ballad when Michael Jackson recorded it, and it still is. I will keep listening to the album and hope that it grows on me, but I’ll be looking forward to her next one and hope that she remembers the sage advice Allen Toussaint once gave her for the 1974 Labelle - Nightbirds album: “You don’t need to give everything you’ve got to every song.” That album is a true classic.
