A very talented jazz pianist, Rachel Z. has always been interested in contemporary pop and rock music. Grace is a bit of a surprise for, in addition to her piano playing in a trio, Rachel sings on the majority of the selections. Her voice is expressive but just average and not on the same level as her work on piano. She apparently felt the need to express herself vocally, performing originals with her own lyrics plus songs by U2, Kurt Cobain, Kate Bush, Björk, and John Lennon (a spooky version of "Imagine"). Listeners primarily interested in Rachel's jazz work will still consider most of Grace of interest because there are many piano solos and good close interplay by the trio even if it is not quite essential. In addition, fans of singer/songwriters who do not mind bits of jazz in their music will find Rachel to be well worth discovering. ~ Scott Yanow

Purchase Grace CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Ted Brown Free Spirit CD (1989)
Grace album
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," ...
| | Rachel Z Everlasting CD (2004)
Grace CD music
$14.49 On 1998's Love Is the Power, her only specifically smooth jazz outing, the versatile pianist did one of the genre's best ever (and vastly underappreciated) pop covers of Alanis Morissette's "Head Over Feet." Then, on 2002's Moon at the Window, she mined the melodic riches of Joni Mitchell's catalog. So it's not surprising that Z would put so much dedication, grace, and spunky energy into creating jazzy reworkings of other classic pop and rock tunes. Driven along by the tight rhythms of bassist Tony Levin and drummer Bobbie Rae, Z alternates between light and happy twists that put the familiar melody up front ("Here Comes the Sun," "Kiss from a Rose") and darker, melancholy meditations of more obscure chestnuts like the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses." Her dives into early alternative rock, tackling Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" and the Smashing Pumpkins' "Tonight Tonight," don't quite pack the drama of Herbie Hancock's take on Nirvana via The ...

| | John Stein Hustle Up! CD (1995)
Grace CD music
$14.49 This Knitting Factory debut (Tightly Knit is a subsidiary) of guitarist John Stein is a bit of a mixed bag. With his own quartet that includes pianist Bruce Torff, bassist Marshall Woods, and drummer Les Harris, Sr., and a pair of guests in organist David Liminia and alternate drummer Dave Hurst on three cuts, Stein runs through a program of mostly original material that is littered with curious choices for interpretive reading. The set opens with the trio playing a completely snoozy rendition of "Poor Butterfly." Given the tune is a ballad, and Stein is not known for being an overdriven player anyway, but here, with his rhythm section almost absent, he slinks along the melody line in a straighter-than-narrow fashion and indulges his own highly developed harmonic intuition for only about eight bars while letting the rhythm section keep a monotonous pace throughout. This is a curious way to open a recording. Things get redeemed a bit over the next three tracks with the other players, on the bluesy swing mood and intensely lyrical and angular arpeggios Stein plays on "Eleanor's Folly." There is also a bit of stunning interplay in the middle section between guitar and organ. On the title track, a straight-ahead ...
| | Jane Jarvis Atlantic/Pacific CD (1999)
Grace music CDs
$9.95 The title refers to veteran pianist Jarvis having recorded half of this project with a band in NYC, the other half in California with a different combo, both with tenor sax and trombone on the front line. It's a program of swing standards, and some originals. Jarvis is a laid-back soul who loves embellishments, shades and textures. She is capable of belting out a more pyrotechnical display, but opts for being an integral part of the group. The East Coast band, with trombonist Benny Powell and tenor saxophonist Frank Wess in tow, starts with effortless bassist Earl May and drummer Jackie Williams rippling off hip waves of tom-tom-informed samba on Powell's tune "Life Long Dream." Jarvis plays chippy piano, and very clipped phrases are heard -- an unusual sound. Powell and Wess coalesce, and they sure sound good together on the ballad "Guru," co-written by the leader and Powell. Here is where Jarvis delicately spices and flavors, rather than driving the band. The great jazz vehicle "I Wish I Knew," Powell's soft wail on his slow blues "Ceah the Wizard," the pristine piano-trio-only ballad of Jarvis' "Here Lies My Love," and the beautifully sparse "Beautiful Love" send the Big Apple band home. Out west, tenor saxophonist Tommy Newsom and trombonist Dan Barrett join Jarvis, drummer Jake Hanna and bassist David Stone for another six-pack. A gentle trio version of "Georgia On My Mind" leads off; Newsom's robust, always enjoyable tenor shows the way for "I Concentrate On You"; and the easy blues of "Baltimore Oriole" has the oft-neglected trumpet master Bill Berry in the driver's seat. Barrett gets a feature on the easily swung Jarvis/Gunnar Jacobsen original "Rachel"; tenor sax and trombone zip along during "Just One of Those Things"; and the finale "After Twelve O'Clock" has just Jarvis and Barrett wistfully baring their souls. If there's a difference in the sessions, it would seem that Jarvis is more sublimated by the California cats, where she's more of a leader in New York. She's a marvelous player throughout, ...

Grace music CDs
$15.05 Though the music itself on Mastercuts' three-disc Latin Jazz compilation is not bad, it's the lack of attention to details that makes this a frustrating release. First off, and most importantly, is that the songs included are actually much more salsa than jazz, and then there are the various misspellings to be found ("Orquestra Broadway" instead of Orquesta Broadway, "Paula Moura" instead of Paulo Moura, "Rene Granda co su Combo New York" instead of Rene Granda ...
