In the wake of Lil Jon and the explosion of crunk, producer/rapper Trill came onto the scene, first as part of the trio Trillville, and then as label head/producer. In the latter guise, Trill ushers Webbie onto the national stage with SAVAGE LIFE. The young rapper's debut album is a mixture of crunk-style production, gangsta themes, and Dirty South attitude. The complex verbal dance of some rappers is not for Webbie, though. Instead he keeps his flow straightforward and his wordplay concise. SAVAGE LIFE's subject matter will be familiar to anyone who's listened to Trillville or Lil Jon; such perennial themes as women, street life, and the pursuit of the gangsta lifestyle dominate the album. Though there are guest artists aplenty (Mannie Fresh, B.G., and others) the mixture of sparse beats and Webbie's singleminded, insistent rapping style are what made SAVAGE LIFE a success and a representative snapshot of the crunk sound circa 2005.
Personnel: Webbie (rap vocals); Lil' Boosie, Mannie Fresh, B.G., Trina, Big Head, Bun B (rap vocals).
Recording information: Studio 7303, Houston, TX; Trill, Baton Rouge, LA.

Savage Life music CDs
$14.29 B.G. has a knack for merging an absolutely hardcore view on life with a sinisterly melodic background, laying it all out with a raw, languid swamp drawl. B.G. rapped through a Southern haze long before it was the style, and the murkily alluring "Fool Wit It" and the eerie "Where Da At" (with a hypnotic heartbeat breakdown) remind us of how the products of his "pinball mind" work. When he gets energized, as he does talking about his home on "Chopper City," ...
| | Ying Yang Twins United State Of Atlanta CD (2005)
Savage Life songs
$14.15 Like Outkast, the Ying Yang Twins are progenitors of southern hip-hop that's a mix of gangsta rap, party jams, and jittery beats, and on UNITED STATE OF ATLANTA the Ying Yang Twins approach the game like a house party thrown in a recording studio. For starters, the wide variety of guests popping up throughout this 70-minute-plus project adds a feeling of randomness, recklessness, and fun. Neo-soul crooner Anthony Hamilton provides some honeyed vocals on the gospel-flavored "Long Time," and Maroon 5's Adam Levine holds his own on the electro-funk of "Live Again," with its nod to the travails of exotic dancers. There's also plenty of support from Dirty South brethren such as Mike Jones & Mr. Collipark (on "Badd"), and tough gal Jacki-O (on the DMX-flavored "Hoes"). The interspersed skits comment on a range of topics: "We at War" touches on the seriousness of America's foreign policy, while things get quite a bit raunchier on bits like "Sex Therapy 101," "102" and "103."

| | R Kelly TP.3: Reloaded CD (2005) Bonus DVD; Limited Edition
Savage Life album
$8.99 The rest of the album provides thirteen tracks of Kelly's typically strong and sensual modern R&B. He starts off the record with a reminder that he's far from a one-note artist, coming on as hard as anyone with the anthemic single "Playa's Club," then rolls into a 1970s groove with help from the always-spectacular Snoop Dogg on "Happy Summertime," before easing ...

$15.05 Fiddler Barbara Lamb's second solo album following her departure from Ranch Romance finds her continuing to branch out stylistically and showcases her impressive range as a musician. She opens with the bluegrass standard "Barefoot Nellie," played (and sung) at breakneck speed and featuring fine vocals from Larry Stephenson, then proceeds to hop from classic Western swing ("Herman's ...

| | Hentchmen Form Follows Function CD (2004)
Savage Life songs
$11.99 Somewhere down the line, longtime Detroit garage rock primitives the Hentchmen learned something about the importance of production values, and if you know them best from their stripped-to-the-bone early albums such as Ultra Hentch and Campus Party, then 2004's Form Follows Function may come as a bit of a surprise. By the Hentchmen's standards, Form Follows Function is downright slick, with clean and crisp engineering, a snappy drum sound, occasional sound effects, vocals and instruments that are actually in tune and in time, and a mix that actually involves panning and such -- in short, it doesn't appear to have been recorded in someone's rec room, unlike the majority of their efforts. But before any longtime fans begin howling "sell out," to these ears adding a bit of polish and buffing off the rough spots only makes it easier to tell that The Hentchmen write really cool songs, and play 'em with the right balance of style ...
