Evidently inspired by Pavement's landmark Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain and Archers of Loaf's Icky Mettle, Portland's Minmae concocts bold, capable indie rock that's as long on guitar power ("Experimental Pop Song) as it is on inventive arrangements. Okay, in the face of the aforementioned -- not to mention Smog -- countrified stompers ("Dimorphic Hips Have Chances Still") and winsome, pedal steel-augmented weepers ("My Parts Will Not Rust") are hardly revolutionary. Still, with a decade-plus of depth, very little in the indie rock world straddles melody and six-string mayhem with the type of finesse exhibited on 2005's I'd Be Scared, Were You Still Burning. To put it simply, Minmae makes gold soundz for now people. ~ John D. Luerssen
Personnel: Josh Kempa (electric bass, background vocals); Christopher Calvert (drums, background vocals); Greg Murphy (drums).
Arrangers: S. Brooks; Minmae.

I'D Be Scared, Were You Still Burning album
$18.94 It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. In its simplest incarnation, Live Anthology is a super-affordable, four-disc box set running 48 tracks, which is eight cuts longer than Springsteen's box, plenty long enough for most fans, but in its deluxe version, available only through Best Buy, there's ...
| | John Mayer Battle Studies CD (2009)
I'D Be Scared, Were You Still Burning CD music
$11.17 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about ...

| | Beausoleil L'Echo CD (1994)
I'D Be Scared, Were You Still Burning CD music
$26.79 L'ECHO was nominated for Best Traditional Folk Album in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards.
L'ECHO delivers what Beausoleil fans have come to expect--spicy, vigorous music steeped deeply in the traditions of the Louisiana bayou country. Though the band's long discography features frequent modernizations of the Cajun and zydeco styles, L'ECHO finds it returning, once again, to its roots. As group founder, vocalist, and master fiddler Michael Doucet claims in the liner notes, the album is meant as a tribute to some of Louisiana's forgotten musical leaders, including the Alley Boys ("Chere Petite Blond"), The Hackberry Ramblers ("Cajun Crawl") and the Breaux Freres ("Hip Et Ti-Yeaux).
Unlike other Beausoleil efforts, zydeco takes something of a backseat here, as the rich vein of French folk comes to the fore in cuts like "O ...
| | John Hart Scenes From A Song CD (2001)
I'D Be Scared, Were You Still Burning music CDs
$13.39 After about 50 recordings as a sideman, this is the versatile John Hart's seventh album as a leader and the first with his fine new trio, and it's an intriguing combination of bold and dreamy. The bold arrives with the first dissonant chord, which leads into the droll and funky "Slacker's Hideaway." It's also evident on Hart's pulse-pounding ...
