Antony and the Johnsons add another EP to their growing chamber pop/cabaret canon with Hope There's Someone. Like its predecessor, the pre-I Am a Bird Now EP The Lake, there are two new tracks that hold their own against anything off of IAABN and the group's lush self-titled debut. Antony's lonely Jeff Buckley-meets-Boy George delivery and sparse instrumentation help keep "Frankenstein" and "Just One Star" at the emotionally naked level that fans have come to expect, while director Glen Fogel's achingly lush video for the winsome title track puts the object of "Hope There's Someone"'s desperation into equally raw -- yet visually arresting -- context. ~ James Christopher Monger

| | Antony & The Johnsons CD (2000)
Hope There's Someone CD music
$12.49 Antony & the Johnsons have put together an elaborate assortment of artsy, sweet, and odd songs on their debut album. Antony's voice is a stunning musical instrument, sounding as feminine as it does masculine. Occasionally, he pulls out all the stops and affects a successful, soaring vocal style. The atmosphere of the album is dark yet somehow uplifting. The music, mostly slow, quiet jazz, played on a piano, harp, cello, flute, clarinets, saxophone, violins, and drums (in addition to some guitar work) occasionally matches Antony's bombastic vocals. Song titles like "Cripple and the Starfish," "Hitler in My Heart," and "The Atrocities" give an idea of the tone. "Hitler in My Heart" sees Antony searching for a "piece of kindness" but finding Hitler in his heart, before relating that "from the corpses, flowers grow." No matter what those lyrics suggest, the song itself begins as a playful, spooky art experiment before revealing itself to be a touching, introspective ballad. "Divine," ...

Hope There's Someone music CDs
$9.89 Antony and the Johnsons offer up a snapshot of their upcoming full-length I Am a Bird Now, to be released in 2005, with the three-track EP The Lake. Antony's musical adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's poem is a chilling piano/cello/guitar-accompanied lament that echoes the work of fellow David Tibet discovery and frequent ...
| | Antony I Am A Bird Now CD (2005)
Hope There's Someone songs
$12.49 Though he probably achieved his greatest mainstream recognition backing up Lou Reed on tour, idiosyncratic songbird Antony is a fully established artiste in his own right. Backed by the Johnsons, as on I AM A BIRD NOW, he crafts delicate ballads that skirt the lines between cabaret, artsong, and pop, with the kind of voice that Stephin Merritt would probably kill for. Antony's unique pipes bring to mind an androgynous Bryan Ferry or a high, quavery summit meeting between Jimmy Scott (another Reed supporter) and Aaron Neville. The stately, graceful, largely piano-driven songs on I AM A BIRD NOW are full of honest, uncluttered emotion, but never go over the top. The communication ...

Hope There's Someone album
$10.09 After a three-year silence, Friends of Dean Martinez return with their third album, ATARDECER. Mainstay Bill Elm and his new cohorts again concoct 11 instrumentals that are exceedingly cinematic, evocative of the redemption of a crisp dawn after a lonely night of desert winds. The Friends' mid-'90s beginnings aligned them with the then-burgeoning lounge music ...
| | Policia!: A Tribute To The Police CD (2005)
Hope There's Someone CD music
$10.55 Rounding up bands from around the emo/indie rock/pop-punk genres, The Militia Group has compiled a pretty solid 12-track tribute to the Police in its enthusiastically titled Policia! While some contributions hit closer to the mark than others, the overall album thankfully comes off as a competent and pleasant affair that doesn't play like a bunch of lukewarm Sting wannabes. The relative diversity of the bands present here helps the album bounce enjoyably along from track to track without turning stale or annoying. Brandtson kicks things off on the right foot with their smooth rendition of "King of Pain" (played like it could be a band original), while Fall Out Boy next taps into their darker side with a pop-punktrified "Roxanne." Their version is admittedly fun due to the band's sheer energy, but for such a talented group, there's a slight feeling that their rework could have been executed a bit better. Motion City Soundtrack offers a synth-laden emo-pop gem, while Limbeck's alt-country-tinged version of "So Lonely" is one of the best tracks on the album. Competing for the title is the absolutely delicious pop/rock of Watashi Wa; covering one of the Police's most well-known songs ("Message in a Bottle") could have seemed like playing it safe, but the guys do such a great job with the song, its familiarity ...
| | Wedding In Paris/Can-Can CD (2005) Soundtrack
Hope There's Someone music CDs
$13.55 Original London Cast/Original Soundtrack: Edmund Hockridge, Evelyn Laye, Anton Walbrook, Irene Hilda.
At first glance, the musicals Wedding in Paris and Can-Can seem to share one characteristic that makes them an appropriate pairing on a single CD: Paris. Actually, however, while Can-Can, with a score by Cole Porter, is set in Paris, Wedding in Paris, which features songs by composer Hans May and lyricist Sonny Miller, takes place on a liner crossing the Atlantic to France. The more important factor that the two shows have in common is that both were produced in London in 1954, Can-Can following a successful Broadway opening, while Wedding in Paris originated in the West End. The date is especially important because, 50 years later, the original London cast recordings for the two shows fell out of copyright in Europe, and Sepia Records stepped in quickly to assemble this unlicensed reissue. As Rexton S. Bunnett acknowledges in his liner notes, only half of the score of Wedding in Paris was recorded, eight tracks with a running time of less than 27 minutes. The British Can-Can had all of its principal songs put on disc, but in abbreviated form; its 13 tracks here clock in at just over 29 minutes. (The CD is filled out to 78 minutes by including medleys of the music from Wedding in Paris and a few stray singles by performers from the casts.) There are also certain musical similarities that make the two sets of recordings a good match. May, an expatriate Viennese living in London, is, not surprisingly, more interested in writing waltz music than Porter, but Miller gives him some witty lyrics in songs such as "A ...
