Columbia/Legacy's THE ESSENTIAL MARTY ROBBINS surveys the crooner's '50s/'60s heyday, including the aforementioned song and his beloved forays into gritty Western territory, most notably the runaway hit "El Paso," a classic gun-slinging tale of ill-fated romance, and "Big Iron," a suspenseful recounting of an impending showdown. The collection follows Robbins through the '70s and into the early '80s, his smooth, clear vocals always at the fore. Although it shares many tracks with the similarly titled THE ESSENTIAL MARTY ROBBINS: 1951-1982, this two-disc compilation focuses more on Robbins's later years (including his posthumous hit--the lush, sweeping "Honkytonk Man"). Those looking for the most even-handed overview of Robbins's career will find it here.
One of the most versatile artists in country-music history, Marty Robbins covered a wide range of styles over his three decades of recording. Robbins's earliest 1950s singles veered from pop to rockabilly to straight-up country, building up momentum that truly kicked in with 1957's breezy "A White Sport Coat (And a Pink Carnation)." This country/pop crossover hit marked one of Robbins's first outings with arranger Ray Conniff, a collaboration that would yield numerous successful singles.
Personnel: Marty Robbins (vocals, piano); Tony Mottola, Jimmy Rollins (guitar); Johnny Gimble (fiddle); Dick Hyman, Floyd Cramer, Owen Bradley, Hargus "Pig" Robbins (piano); Jerry Byrd (bass guitar).

Marty Robbins in good sound Marty Robbins' lovers need no presentation of such an artist: we know he was a marvellous interpreter of songs of every kind, maybe his best he achieved in western songs.
The collection shows his art, and just for the fact that it had to be a full compilation of his songs in every field, some songs have not been included, some of them being also better than the included.
The sound is simply fantastic, vivid and clear, never hard. A good, morbid sound!
So, I think this compilaion has to be taken first of all by persons who don't know him, but curious about his art, and also by his fans, just because of the good sound.

Skeeter Davis has had two phases of her career: the first as part of the duo, the Davis Sisters, with Betty Jack Davis (they weren't really sisters, by the way) in the pre-rock & roll era, and the second as a solo Nashville country crossover artist in the 1960s. The Davis Sisters recorded one bona fide classic, "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know," which was a huge hit in 1953, and Skeeter mirrored it with a classic of her own in 1963, the weepy and resigned "The End of the World," which features a perfectly measured vocal from Davis, which manages to overcome the pathos inherent in the lyrics. This collection of solo sides reveals the formula Davis followed pretty clearly, merging ...

| | Lynn Anderson Live From The Rose Garden CD (2005) Bonus DVD
Essential Marty Robbins album
$12.35 There's no recording date information and the general packaging is minimalist, to say the least; but this double-disc set -- one live CD and one DVD containing the video equivalent of the same show -- delivers where it counts, in the music. The sound is such that there's very little audience ambience, but there's plenty of presence for the band and even more so for Lynn Anderson, who is in excellent form throughout. The CD is great, but the DVD is even better, not only with an excellent visual account of the concert from the Renaissance Center in Dixon, TN, but also a nice selection of bonus features -- before and after interviews and other support materials. The camera angles vary sufficiently so that one never feels confined or static watching the show, and the full-screen (1.33-to-1) image is crisp enough to pass for HDTV. The audio is mastered a little low on the DVD but it pumps up well and cleanly, and in other details -- the menu's simplicity, the chapter breaks (one per song, natch) ...

Essential Marty Robbins CD music
$15.19 "As I began to write a lot songs in my early twenties, " explains Chris, "I realized that most everything, and every feeling, had been written in every musical genre that I was exposed to as a young songwriter. I soon came to realize that the only unique perspective that I could have on the subjects that I wanted to write about would be my own experiences; my own feelings; my own perspective; my own journey. With this newfound insight, I began the challenging process of chronicling my life in song; with each new set of words and music becoming a chapter in the "autobiography" of my life." This record, "The Roar Of The Approaching Night" continues the journey that began with Chris' debut record, "Life Away" (1984/White Crow Records) which shared his own perspective of "life on my own" as a young man first away from his father's house. ...
