Becoming appropriate to these times.
Prior and during World War II the music of Glenn Miller reflected the mood of America. The best of those records are rarely heard.

Essential Glenn Miller album for sale Don't let the title fool you; after listening to The Only Doo-Wop Collection You'll Ever Need, you'll definitely want more. This is a good starting point for the curious, since all the basics are here in the original hit versions: "The Great Pretender," "Earth Angel," "I Only Have Eyes for You," "Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight," and, thrown in for good measure, a few tracks that even vocal group scholars wouldn't mind hearing again by the Marvelows, the Duprees, the Jive Five, and the Earls. While this is an excellent primer, the best representation of vocal group harmonies of the era remains the lavish (and pricey) 101-track Doo Wop Box on Rhino. ~ Al Campbell 2cds-Del Vikings/Platters/Dion & Belmonts/Five Satins/Spaniel Liner Note Author: Billy Vera.

Essential Glenn Miller buy CD music Popular songs are often associated with the vocalists that made them famous but few artists actually have the distinction of having a "theme" song along the lines of Bob Hope with "Thanks for the Memories." Even fewer can claim to have two theme songs attached to them and Andy Williams is one of those fortunate stars. After "Moon River" became forever linked to Williams, he recorded a holiday song for his first Christmas album that gave him a yuletide hit and theme song. "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" was the right song at the right time for Williams when he began to perform it on his highly successful NBC Christmas specials that featured the whole Williams clan. Both the song and the television specials were so memorable, it wasn't long before Williams was crowned "Mr. Christmas." Of course having a full album of wonderful holiday songs perfectly performed doesn't hurt either and the Andy Williams Christmas Album was an instant hit when released in 1963 and has since become a traditional classic. Along with "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," Williams cheerfully celebrates with the spirited medley "Happy Holidays/The Holiday Season" and is at his playful best on the irresistibly raucous "Kay Thompson's Jingle Bells." He also wraps his voice around chestnuts like "White Christmas" and "The Christmas Song" with all the warmth of a favorite blanket, while a soaring version of "O Holy Night" is both enchanting and moving. His tender reading of the lesser-known "Sweet Little Jesus Boy" is as beautiful and serene as a crystal clear winter's night, but it is the instantly catchy opening line of "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" that people remember the most. It is a fitting theme song not only for Andy "Mr.Christmas" Williams, but for the season as well and a sparkling highlight from a classic holiday album. ~ Aaron Latham

Essential Glenn Miller songs The aesthetic Rod Stewart had been honing over his first three solo albums--an aesthetic that combined folk, hard rock, and R&B swagger--was perfected on EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY. The album's combination of strong, original songs and plum cover versions reveal the artist's range and versatility as he simultaneously paid tribute to mentors and declared his own craft. Members of Stewart's regular group, the Faces, provide intuitive support, making nearly every track shine with passion and edge. Stewart's take-no-prisoners interpretation of the Temptations' "(I Know I'm) Losing You" brought new dimensions to a Tamla/Motown classic. "Maggie May," one of the great pop anthems, is the obvious standout, but the remaining selections, such as "Mandolin Wind" and Tim Hardin's beautiful "Reason To Believe," have a similar sense of purpose. Through it all, of course, is Stewart's soulful, beautifully textured singing, which reaches its pinnacle on these performances, ensuring the artist's standing as one of rock's all-time greatest vocalists. If you buy only one Rod Stewart album, EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY should be it. Personnel includes: Rod Stewart (vocals, acoustic guitar); Martin Quittenton (acoustic guitar); Ron Wood (guitar, pedal steel guitar, bass); Sam Mitchell (slide guitar); Dick Powell (violin); Pete Sears (piano); Ian McClagan (organ); Danny Thompson, Andy Pyle (bass); Mick Waller (drums); Madeline Bell, Mateus Rose, John Baldry (background vocals). Essential Glenn Miller CD music All tracks have been digitally remastered using 20-Bit technology. The Benny Goodman Orchestra was in top form when this concert was performed on January 16th, 1938. But this is more than just a concert; this date is significant because it represents the first time a jazz ensemble ever played in a concert hall. The full Goodman orchestra is featured on many tracks of this two-disc set. Goodman also splits up the evening with some performances by his trio and quartet. Additionally, he gives a 20-year retrospective of jazz, highlighting the Dixieland sound and innovators such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and others. (On "Blue Reverie," some of Ellington's musicians even sit in with Goodman.) Highlights include "Sing Sing Sing (With a Swing)," a classic tune that helped to define the Swing Era itself. This piece features the charismatic drummer Gene Krupa, whose tom-tom rhythms convey a kind of "jungle feel," as the brass figures mimic the call of elephants. On "Avalon," another Goodman favorite, vibraphonist Lionel Hampton really shines. His meticulous arpeggiated runs up and down the vibes are just as exciting today as they must have been in 1938. LIVE AT CARNEGIE HALL 1938 is truly a jazz milestone. Recorded at Carnegie Hall, New York, New York on January 16, 1938. Includes liner notes by Phil Schaap and Turk Van Lake. Essential Glenn Miller buy CD music ESSENTIAL is an appropriate title for this double-disc collection of Artie Shaw's music. The temperamental, progressive bandleader and clarinetist was one of the top figures in swing, and his arrangements and recordings of classic songs (Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine," for example) are definitive documents of the era. Shaw's own prowess as an instrumentalist, and his innovative techniques--his use of exotic melodies ("Frenesi") and orchestral strings ("Temptation"), for instance--further heighten his appeal. All of these qualities and more are represented on this comprehensive, superbly compiled set. Recording information: Chicago, IL (12/23/1936-08/02/1953); Hollywood, CA (12/23/1936-08/02/1953); New York, NY (12/23/1936-08/02/1953). Essential Glenn Miller songs One of at least seven entirely different compilations that brandish the word "Essential" in their titles, this double-disc anthology of 40 classic swing performances actually does convey the essence of Benny Goodman, and is therefore highly recommended. The recordings, most of them cut in the Victor and Columbia studios between 1934 and 1945, are laid out in four exacting categories of ten tracks apiece. A tribute to Goodman's big-band arrangers pays homage to Fletcher and Horace Henderson, Edgar Sampson, Jimmy Mundy, George Bassman, Deane Kincaide, Spud Murphy, Eddie Sauter and Mel Powell. A "Visit to Tin Pan Alley" salutes songwriters George & Ira Gershwin, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, Richard Whiting, Johnny Mercer, Cole Porter and Vernon Duke. The superb lineup of vocalists includes Helen Ward, Martha Tilton, Mildred Bailey, Helen Forrest and Peggy Lee. Goodman's small groups, from trios to septets, are well represented here. Starting with the cardinal players Teddy Wilson, Gene Krupa and Lionel Hampton, the potent third segment of the album gradually ushers in such brilliant improvisers as Charlie Christian, Red Norvo, Cootie Williams, Georgie Auld, Johnny Guarnieri and Count Basie. This marvelous double album closes with ten examples of Goodman performing in front of live audiences. These radio broadcast airchecks document the manner in which most people in North America heard Goodman on a regular basis. Perhaps the best of these is the final track; an exciting five-and-a-half minute version of Fats Waller's "Stealin' Apples" performed on the roof of the Hotel Astor in New York City. This swinging performance demonstrates exactly why Benny Goodman was so popular before, during and after the Second World War. ~ arwulf arwulf Personnel: Benny Goodman (clarinet); Helen Forrest, Helen Ward, Martha Tilton, Mildred Bailey, Peggy Lee (vocals); Mike Bryan, Arnold Covey, Benny Heller, George Van Eps, Allan Reuss, Tom Morgan (guitar); Charlie Christian (electric guitar); Eddie Rosa, Noni Bernardi, Buff Estes, Skippy Martin, Bob Snyder, Gus Bivona, George Koenig, Bill Shine, Bill DePew, Ben Kantor, Clint Neagley, Dave Matthews, John Prager, Julie Schwartz, Nuncio "Toots" Mondello, Hymie Schertzer (alto saxophone); Cliff Strickland, Bus Bassey, Art Rollini, Gish Gilbertson, Georgie Auld, Herbie Haymer, Jack Henderson , Jerry Jerome, Dick Clark , Babe Russin, Vido Musso, George Berg, Bob Taylor, Bud Freeman (tenor saxophone); Chuck Gentry, Danny Bank (baritone saxophone); Joe Rushton (bass saxophone); Bobby Guyer, Sammy Shapiro, Manny Klein, Nate Kazebier, Ralph Muzillo, Irving Goodman, Alec Fila, Jerry Neary, Harry Geller, Cootie Williams, Gordon "Chris" Griffin, Jimmy Blake, Harry James, Johnny Martel, Lee Castle, Russ Case, Ziggy Elman, John McClanian Best Jr., Billy Butterfield, Jimmy Maxwell, Bernie Privin, Bunny Berigan, "Fat" Al Davis (trumpet); Addison Collins (French horn); Ted Vesely, Jack Lacey, Charlie Castaldo, Joe Harris , Lou McGarity, Miff Mole, Murray McEachern, Vernon Brown, Red Ballard, Cutty Cutshall (trombone); Claude Thornhill, Johnny Guarneri, Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, Frank Froeba, Jess Stacy, Johnny Guarnieri, Teddy Wilson, Bernie Leighton, Mel Powell (piano); Lionel Hampton, Red Norvo (vibraphone); Sid Weiss, Barney Spieler, Harry Goodman, Hank Wayland, Artie Bernstein, Slam Stewart (bass guitar); Harry Jaeger, Dave Tough, Gene Krupa, George Wettling, Louie Bellson, Morey Feld, Nick Fatool, Sam Weiss, Ralph Collier (drums).
