Essential Duke Ellington album for sale Product Description
Essential Duke Ellington album for sale by Duke Ellington was released Jun 28, 2005 on the Legacy label. Most of the tunes here, though, date back to Ellington's peak years--the late '20s to early '40s--including the sassy "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)," the gentle "In a Sentimental Mood," and the boisterous "Take the 'A' Train." Throughout this ESSENTIAL set, Ellington's compositional and instrumental skills are consistently sophisticated and inventive. Every song is enhanced by his formidable ensembles, which include the multi-instrumental talents of reed players Harry Carney and Johnny Hodges, along with many other jazz legends. Essential Duke Ellington CD music is a 2-disc set with 37 songs. ...See Full Description

Jimmy Buffett Meet Me in Margaritaville: The Ultimate Collection CDs (2003) Top Seller
Essential Duke Ellington buy CD music This collection contains 12 previously unreleased tracks including, 2 new songs, 6 alternate versions and 4 live recordings.
Jimmy Buffett had one gigantic pop hit back in 1977 with his ode to brain-drain, "Margaritaville." Buffett's laid-back combination of country, folk, and calypso also garnered him an huge cult following; his fans, dubbed Parrotheads, have helped him remain one of the top touring acts and a platinum-album creator for 25 years following his Top 10 hit. While many massively successful artists whose catalogue is overshadowed by one hit have been known to curse their fate, no one has embraced their hit with quite the zeal of the mellow Buffett, and indeed his latest double-CD collection is entitled MEET ME IN MARGARITAVILLE.
Of course, the titular song is featured, as are Buffett's other minor hits (including underrated classics like "Come Monday"), many beloved fan favorites, and most importantly 10 brand new recordings. Eight of these revisit familiar Buffett songs, best of which is a rousing live version of "A Pirate Looks At 40." The remaining two are covers of the Fred Neil-penned "Everybody's Talking" and the Beach Boys' "Sail On Sailor," each perfectly suited to Buffett's voice and trademark island-flavored sound. MEET ME IN MARGARITAVILLE contains something for both Buffett's longtime fans and casual listeners who want a good collection of all the man's music in one place.

Four Tops 50th Anniversary Anthology CDs (2004) Top Seller
Essential Duke Ellington CD music Recorded between 1964 & 1988. Includes liner notes by Stu Hackel.
Not to be confused with the Four Tops compilation simply entitled Anthology (which only covers their Motown recordings), 50th Anniversary Anthology is a double-CD set spanning their first Motown hit in 1964 to the late '80s. Does it include all of the popular numbers that most fans want from a greatest-hits collection? Definitely. Is it as good as Anthology, or slimmer compilations that focus exclusively on their Motown hits from the 1960s and early '70s? No, because there's way too much dispensable post-mid-'70s stuff on disc two. Still, for those who want an anthology that includes non-Motown hits (particularly their early-'70s Dunhill singles) and are reluctant to splash out for the four-CD Fourever box set, this is the best available alternative. And unquestionably, the first two-thirds or so of this collection is excellent, including all the big Motown hits; plenty of good, less celebrated lower-charting Motown singles, like "I'll Turn to Stone" (the B-side of "7-Rooms of Gloom"); and their early Dunhill hits, in which they capably imitated Philly soul stars the O'Jays and the Spinners. But the group floundered as the '70s waned, and by the time of the ribald 1976 disco hit "Catfish," they were on the verge of not only losing their personality, but of embarrassing themselves. The proceedings don't stop there, unfortunately, tacking on a bunch of other small post-1976 hits ("When She Was My Girl" was the only big one), culminating in Levi Stubbs' gruesome contribution to the Little Shop of Horrors, "Mean Green Mother From Outer Space." It was a long way from "Baby I Need Your Loving," though luckily it's the classic stuff that dominates the program. ~ Richie Unterberger
Producers include: Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, William Stevenson, Ivy Jo Hunter, R. Dean Taylor.
Compilation producer: Harry Weinger.
The Four Tops: Renaldo "Obie" Benson, Abdul "Duke" Fakir, Lawrence Payton, Levi Stubbs (vocals).

Impressions Ultimate Collection CD (2001) Top Seller
Essential Duke Ellington songs Recorded between 1958 and 1975. Includes liner notes by A. Scott Galloway.
This is an Ultimate Collection for the Impressions, not Curtis Mayfield, which are two separate things, no matter how closely intertwined their histories are. This begins with "For Your Precious Love," when Jerry Butler was the lead singer, and ends with two tracks that he neither wrote nor sang, giving a good basic history of the band's career from 1958 to 1975. Not every great Impressions song is here, but nearly ever song here is great (the quality does dip a bit toward the end); this certainly delivers a good summary of -- and even introduction to -- the group, which was one of the greatest of its time, regardless of genre. That said, it won't give you everything you need -- but it certainly will get your love started. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Benny Goodman Essential Benny Goodman CDs (2007) Top Seller
Essential Duke Ellington album for sale One of at least seven entirely different compilations that brandish the word "Essential" in their titles, this double-disc anthology of 40 classic swing performances actually does convey the essence of Benny Goodman, and is therefore highly recommended. The recordings, most of them cut in the Victor and Columbia studios between 1934 and 1945, are laid out in four exacting categories of ten tracks apiece. A tribute to Goodman's big-band arrangers pays homage to Fletcher and Horace Henderson, Edgar Sampson, Jimmy Mundy, George Bassman, Deane Kincaide, Spud Murphy, Eddie Sauter and Mel Powell. A "Visit to Tin Pan Alley" salutes songwriters George & Ira Gershwin, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, Richard Whiting, Johnny Mercer, Cole Porter and Vernon Duke. The superb lineup of vocalists includes Helen Ward, Martha Tilton, Mildred Bailey, Helen Forrest and Peggy Lee. Goodman's small groups, from trios to septets, are well represented here. Starting with the cardinal players Teddy Wilson, Gene Krupa and Lionel Hampton, the potent third segment of the album gradually ushers in such brilliant improvisers as Charlie Christian, Red Norvo, Cootie Williams, Georgie Auld, Johnny Guarnieri and Count Basie. This marvelous double album closes with ten examples of Goodman performing in front of live audiences. These radio broadcast airchecks document the manner in which most people in North America heard Goodman on a regular basis. Perhaps the best of these is the final track; an exciting five-and-a-half minute version of Fats Waller's "Stealin' Apples" performed on the roof of the Hotel Astor in New York City. This swinging performance demonstrates exactly why Benny Goodman was so popular before, during and after the Second World War. ~ arwulf arwulf

Motown Christmas, Vol. 2 CD (2001)
Essential Duke Ellington buy CD music Digitally remastered by Kevin Reeves (Universal Mastering Studios-East).
Appearing almost three decades after the first volume, which topped charts in 1973, A Motown Christmas, Vol. 2 collects 14 holiday tracks from the biggest and best stable of soul singers ever seen. Unfortunately, several of these tracks were recorded long after Motown's prime era; the Temptations' "Love Comes With Christmas" and "The Little Drummer Boy" are rather maudlin affairs from their 1980 holiday record Give Love at Christmas, while the Jackson 5's "Up on the House Top" and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" are fluffy throwaways. Still, half a dozen of the tracks are previously unreleased (at least, in their original mixes) and the rarities are interesting for Motown collectors. Marvin Gaye contributes the bizarre yet affecting "Purple Snowflakes," while Ronnie White and house band the Funk Brothers contribute two tracks: "Winter Wonderland" and "Xmas Twist" (the last billed as the Twistin' Kings). Stay tuned after the 14-song program for Christmas shout-outs from the Supremes, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Martha Reeves, Eddie Kendricks of the Temptations, Duke Fakir of the Four Tops, and the Spinners. ~ John Bush
