A label that bases a compilation on its number one singles seems like it's more concerned with patting itself on the back than giving the consumer something useful. In Def Jam's case, #1 Spot serves both causes. Arranged in chronological order covering nearly 20 years, the disc begins with Oran "Juice" Jones' equally dramatic and gut-busting "The Rain" (an inspiration R. Kelly should've thought about taking more to heart for the "Trapped in the Closet" saga) and closes with Ludacris' hulking "Stand Up," the only inclusion with no discernible connection to R&B. Each selection hit the top of Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop chart (a handful did as well on the Pop chart), but there's a definite slant toward the more relaxed side of R&B and pop-rap. After LL Cool J's "I Need Love," the track that follows "The Rain," the disc skips ahead eight years to Montell Jordan's "This Is How We Do It," and from there, the disc rolls through singles from the late '90s and early 2000s, when Def Jam was becoming known for R&B as much as raw hip-hop. (Who could've predicted back in the mid-'80s that the label would go through such a transformation?) The chronological sequencing and stylistic focus -- best exemplified by the back-to-back Neptunes productions, LL Cool J's "Luv U Better" and Jay-Z's "Excuse Me Miss" -- makes the disc that much easier to listen to from beginning to end. ~ Andy Kellman

Arrangers: Montell Jordan; R. Kelly.

Personnel: Marc Dorsey (vocals); Growmico Collins, Shae Jones, Case (background vocals).

Audio Remixers: Wino; Prince Rhakeem.

The "free" in the title to Joss Stone's fourth album apparently refers to the neo-singer breaking free from the shackles of her major label, EMI, who apparently have not let Joss be Joss. That this constricting argument happens to be the exact same story ...
Da Derrty Versions: The Reinvention
Nelly Da Derrty Versions: The Reinvention CD  (2003) Edited

#1 Def Jam Spot music CDs
CD $12.65  3.8 stars Audio Samples
While remix albums of all shades were in vogue during 2003, Nelly truly seems to be having fun on DA DERRTY VERSIONS, his addition to the genre. This release is unique in that the remixes are generally by the original producer. Also, the title is a bit of a misnomer, as it implies more stripped-down or crunked-out versions, which are not really what this record is about. However, that's not a bad thing; DA DERRTY VERSIONS is a consistently entertaining record featuring many clever twists, unforgettable guest shots, and one ultra-catchy, all-new track "Iz U." By far, the most ear-catching moment is the peculiarly inspired reworking of the smash "Ride wit Me" which begins a cappella before a jangly guitar kicks in and reimagines the rap to the tune of John Mayer's "No Such Thing." Nelly's first hit, "Country ...
Red, White And Black
BellRays Red, White And Black CD  (2003)

#1 Def Jam Spot songs
CD $12.95
The BellRays turn in another batch of searing soul-punk moments on Red, White and Black. While they're led by the throaty, nearly unchecked vocal rip of Lisa Kekaula -- whose vocals seem to ricochet off the considerable chip on her shoulder -- the other spectacular thing about this record is Tony Fate's absolutely amazing clutch of guitar tones. His rig is urgent Thin Lizzy/Kiss sludge on the mellow menace of "Used to Be," but it crackles with immediacy for the bristling Detroit-style rocker "Street Corner," or during the mid-album standout "Sister Disaster." The BellRays hit everything on time (including your jaw), which gives even their more workmanlike moments an enviable zing. A turn toward squelchy, angry, and wildly shifting punk rock poetry on "Poison Arrow" works Black Flag-wonders in Kekaula's hands -- in another's it would simply be overwrought. Let's say it again: she's an absolutely amazing vocalist, checking everyone from Arthur Lee and Tina Turner to Mick Collins, whose band the Dirtbombs are fellow travelers of the BellRays. "You're Sorry Now" brings in some backing vocals for its freaked-out, '60s garage revivalism; its melody returns later in the album for a brooding piano revisit. Late in the album, "Voodoo Train" busts through the station wall. Its extended beginning is like the thrum of a faraway locomotive, before Kekaula lays it down -- "Well I feel like Satan and I'll tell you why" -- and the thing lurches into bluesy, punky overdrive. It might be the strongest thing on the record, since it effortlessly combines the past and present, anger and love, rousing vocals and roundhouse-rattling electric guitar. Is that blood on your lip? You must've bit through it a few songs ago. [Red, White and Black came complete with six additional, downloadable tracks, the better to make your computer bleed, too.] ~ Johnny Loftus The BellRays turn in another batch of searing soul-punk moments on Red, White and Black.
