If you want to determine whether someone is a serious metal connoisseur or has a more casual interest in metal, try running certain names by him/her. It isn't unusual for folks who are only casually interested in metal to have some Metallica, Slipknot, Judas Priest, or Korn in their CD collections -- those are huge, widely publicized bands -- but when a headbanger carries on enthusiastically about a cult band like Meliah Rage, Budgie, Grief, Hellhammer, or Saint Vitus, you know you're talking to someone who lives and breathes metal. Flotsam & Jetsam are another band that appeals to headbangers who dig much deeper than the basics; although never a major name, they have maintained a small cult following. Along the way, Flotsam & Jetsam have had numerous lineup changes -- and when you're that much of a revolving door, your work can be erratic. But in a sense, Flotsam & Jetsam are like Saturday Night Live -- even if they disappoint you today, you figure they'll bounce back creatively tomorrow. This 2005 release is their first album for Crash Music and their first since 2001's My God on Metal Blade -- and while it isn't among their essential releases, it isn't bad either. This time, the thrash veterans opted to provide a concept album; everything on the 47-minute disc revolves around the theme of death-related nightmares. Dreams of Death is best enjoyed as a whole, although aggressive yet darkly melodic tracks like "Straight to Hell" and "Look in His Eyes" can be listened to individually and still have some meaning. Dreams of Death doesn't pull off the conceptual thing as well as, say, Queensr˙che's Operation: Mindcrime -- the ultimate conceptual metal masterpiece -- but it has more ups than downs and demonstrates that Flotsam & Jetsam can still be exciting after all these years. ~ Alex Henderson

Dreams of Death This is a great return CD for FloJet.
It is almost like the older Flotsam from When the Storm Comes Down to drift. Overall a good buy, expecially fot the true fan. There is a lot of great jammin, however the lyrics get a bit wakky sometimes. Submitted by notchback84 (Middletown, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Excellent Choice I feel this is another great F&J disc. Solid throughout. Catchy rhythms and strong vocals. An excellent choice. Submitted by Mike (Lake Stevens, WA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Different sound, same great band I'm sure if you're reading this, you're probably a Flots fan already. If you're wondering how the new one sounds, well it's a bit different from anything they've done before, but is still the great band we've come to known.
This album is definitely the darkest and most brooding work they've done...it sort of sounds like a darker, slower and more introspective version of My God. The lead work seems to take a back seat here for more rhythmic, melodic metal. You can tell these guys have matured and make music for themselves and their fans, not to try to make money or get on the radio.
At first you might think the album is too "slow", but believe me, this album grows on you, and A.K. as always, makes the band what it is. You can tell his voice is aging, and he can't hit the super-high notes anymore, but he definitely still has the same attitute and grit he's always had. I have always believed A.K. has the best voice in metal, ever. No one can belt it out like he could (and still can, when he wants to).
As with My God, the "psychadelic" elements are really in play here even more so...the "background talking" is there, and now a lot of backwards stuff...from the music to sound effects. It's not demonic, just strange. The "hidden track" is like a medley of a few songs, with lots of backwards stuff thrown in there. At first you might think this sounds sort of dumb, but think about it, it's absolutely ingenious and original. It really gives this album a sort of ethereal feel, which you know is coming when you see the album cover.
As for the songs, there are some good earlier-era thrash sounds(although much more melodic), and two great ballads, with "Burning in Red" arguably the best ballad F&J ever wrote. The lyrics are typical Flotsam: confusion, anger, aggression. As always, this is thinking person's music. The rest of the boys' stellar playing is there as always.
If there are any negatives, it's the rather short length (9 songs)--I would have liked to have seen a few more, and no lyrics with the CD, but that's forgivable.
All in all, this is a must have for Flots fans. I've heard one person say it's their best work since Drift, and another say it is their worst ever. I won't say this is their best, this is not Drift or Cuatro (my favorites), but it is a great album when you listen to it a couple times and realize it's meant to be brooding. This is classic Flotsam attitude, just packaged in mature form.
Hey if any of the band is reading this--keep it up your fans love you guys! Submitted by cardvamp (Wisconsin) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
