Building up momentum on his first two solo albums, Ian Brown hit a creative stride with 2002's MUSIC OF THE SPHERES, a disc that garnered the former Stone Roses singer his best reviews since striking out on his own in the late 1990s. Unlike on past outings, the Madchester icon leaves all instrumentation to a solid crew of backing musicians, most notably keyboardist/programmer Dave McCracken, a holdover from GOLDEN GREATS who is key in shaping this record's dreamy, electronica-rooted sound. While the string-laden opener "F.E.A.R." is reminiscent of the Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony," its burbling techno elements give the song an intriguing synthetic edge. Other highlights include "Stardust," a shimmering, mid-tempo track that ranks among Brown's finest tunes, and "Whispers," another fascinating composition that deftly mixes orchestral and electronic touches. A strong collection of ambitious songs, SPHERES sets straight anyone who still doubted that Brown was a viable solo artist. (Note: The 2006 reissue presents an enhanced bonus disc that features remixes by acts such as U.N.K.L.E. and Nightmares on Wax, along with video and interview footage.)
The enhanced portion of this CD contain interviews.

| | Ian Brown Golden Greats CD (1999) Bonus Tracks; Enhanced CD
Music Of The Spheres CD music
$10.69 After his glittering career as vocalist for mid-'80s alterno-giants the Stone Roses, it was only natural that Ian Brown would resurface as a solo artist. On GOLDEN GREATS, his second solo album (the first, UNFINISHED MONKEY BUSINESS, has yet to be released in the United States), Ian Brown builds upon the funk of Stone Roses classics like "Fool's Gold" and created an album's worth of material that, unlike so many dabblers, has a genuine groove to it.
Standouts include the Asian-influenced opening of "Getting High," which ...

| | Margot & The Nuclear So And So' Dust Of Retreat CD (2005) Exco
Music Of The Spheres songs
$11.45 On its major-label debut, this Indiana eight-piece performs quirky, richly layered, folk-based material laced with traces of electronica, while founder member Richard Edwards croons finely detailed, confessional songs like the atmospheric "A Sea Chanty of Sorts" and the pretty chamber pop of "Vampires in Blue Dresses." There's musical muscle behind the delicate filigree, too, as evidenced by the grinding guitars of "Barfight Revolution, Power Violence," while "Skeleton Key" is infectious, sensitive, and guilt-ridden.
Margot & the Nuclear So and So's have created an album that both the casual music fan and music perfectionist will enjoy. The Dust of Retreat is a cinematic chamber pop songbook of what was once and what might have been. Singer/songwriter Richard Edwards, only in his early twenties when he composed these mini-epics, is quite fond of New York. Mesmerized by the Greenwich Village art scene of the 1960s and curious about how people lived during that time, he uses this interest as the inspiration behind ...
| | Orb BBC Sessions 1989-2001 CDs (2008)
Music Of The Spheres album
$15.99 The proliferation of electronica artists throughout the 1990s and 2000s may make it easy to lose sight of the genre's founding fathers, but this compilation of the Orb's BBC sessions, recorded between 1989 and 2001, will rectify that mistake. Forerunners of IDM and ambient house, the Orb's pulsating, psychedelic grooves were tremendously influential, thanks in part to the support of John Peel, who recorded several excellent sessions with the group ...

| | Wham Make It Big CD (1984)
Music Of The Spheres music CDs
$7.59 The title was a promise to themselves, Wham!'s assurance that they would make it big after struggling out of the gates the first time out. They succeeded on a grander scale than they ever could have imagined, conquering the world and elsewhere with this effervescent set of giddy new wave pop-soul, thereby making George Michael a superstar and consigning Andrew Ridgeley to the confines of Trivial Pursuit. It was so big and the singles were so strong that it's easy to overlook its patchwork qualities. It's no longer than eight tracks, short even for the pre-CD era, and while the four singles are strong, the rest is filler, including an Isley Brothers cover. Thankfully, it's the kind of filler that's so tied to its time that it's fascinating in its stilted post-disco dance-pop rhythms and Thatcher/Reagan materialism -- an era that encouraged songs called "Credit Card Baby." If this dichotomy between the A-sides and B-sides is far too great to make this essential, the way Faith later would be, those A-sides range from good to terrific. "Wake ...
